African Drone and Data Academy Programme Closes

The African drone and data academy that was held in Malawi has come to a close, and the organisers celebrated this feat with a closing ceremony. The ceremony saw the presentation of projects that various teams developed during the training These included remote sensing technology during the response to natural disasters, precision agriculture and pest control, and road damage detection using Artificial Intelligence. These technologies will consequently be vital to solving the continent’s problems.

At the event, participants committed to using the technologies to solve problems in their communities. They also committed to transferring knowledge so that more young people in Africa can learn about these technologies, thus helping in the digital inclusion and insertion of their countries in a globalized world.

The academy also obtained various results, including the construction of an unmanned fixed-wing aircraft, EcoSoar model, Drones with vertical take-off capability Model S500, creation of analytical models using DeepLearning to control electrical networks, creation of models for identification, quantification and analysis of palm trees in neotropical regions and the use of Google Earth Engine (cloud computing tool created by google) for large-scale analysis. The training also involved certification in Drone operation (TOP – Trusted Operator Certificate) by the International Association of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (AUVSI).

UNICEF thanked the participation and support of the participating institutions, including the University of Virginia, the University of Furman, the Malawi University of Science and Technology, the host, as well as the various sponsors. University of Malawi has a new Vice Chancellor

Professor Samson Sajidu has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor of the University of Malawi (UNIMA).

According to a communication from UNIMA Council, Prof. Sajidu’s appointment as the new vice-chancellor of the UNIMA is with effect from 1 April, 2022.

“Please take note that Council has guided that the outgoing Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Al Mtenje and the incoming Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samson Sajidu should work together in the month of April, 2022 for purposes of orderly handovers. Therefore, invite all of you to join me in congratulating Prof. Sajidu for being appointed to the position of vice-chancellor. Let us render our full support as he embarks on his new tour of duty,” reads the communication in part.

Prof. Sajidu becomes the 10th vice-chancellor of the university being preceded by Prof. John Kalenga Saka. In the history of the university, the first vice-chancellor was Dr Ian Michael 1965–1973.

Reach Out Project make generous donation to flood victims in Chikwawa

The Reach Out Project spearheaded by Ashley Furniture Home store, on Sunday made a generous donation to over seventy families affected by floods in Chikwawa district.

The donations were made at Chilangoma and Misili camps.

Ashley Furniture donated assorted food stuff worth K1 million and it’s employees donated second hand clothes and shoes to the victims.

Speaking after making the donation Ashley furniture Marketing and Communications Manager Lumuli Mwamondwe popularly known as Biggie Lu, said he was very much concerned after seeing that people in different parts of the country especially in the Lower Shire were badly affected by floods induced by tropical storm Ana.

“I was very much concerned about the loss of lives and the damages caused by the natural disaster and got in touch with Ashley Furniture bosses and other well wishers for disaster relief assistance. I am happy today that we are finally here reaching out to our friends,” said Mwamondwe

Mwamondwe then thanked individuals that showed support towards the initiative.

In January this year, heavy rainfall associated with strong winds caused havoc in the Lower Shire districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje where over ten villages were rendered destitute by the flooding rivers.

Prodigal son Mlomo dumps UTM  to return to MCP

Former National Executive Member of MCP Daniel Mlomo, who dumped the party to join UTM , has returned to the party 18 months after he left. Mlomo was welcomed on Monday morning at MCP headquarters in Lilongwe

Mlomo a very experienced politician who served MCP at senior level was  also Central Region Chairperson for MCP around 2016.He lost his NEC position at 2018 MCP convention. Out of sheer frustration he joined UTM. UTM party entrusted him with the same position, Regional Chairperson for the Center.

Nkhatabay MP Ken Zikhale speaks highly of this year’s budget

Member of Parliament for Nkhatabay South Constituency , Hon Ken Zikhale Ng’oma has recommended and supported the Budget which was presented by the Minister of Finance Hon Sosten Gwengwe.

Zikhale Ng’oma was Speaking in Parliament during the week. He said the Chakwera’s Government has taken a firm stand to make sure that the Budget falls within the borrowing limits set by Parliament. He said the Ministry of Finance has bring in Prudence , transparency and Accountability.

Zikhale also blasted and crushed into pieces the Statement made by Zomba Likangala MP on the SONA. Zikhale said this Budget is in the best interest of Malawians henceforth he supports the Budget. Hon Ken Zikhale Ng’oma also said Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera is showing the wise Leadership . He also urged MPs to support the Budget regardless of Political Parties they are belonging to.

Hon Zikhale also thanked His Excellency the State President of the Republic of Malawi Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera for appointing young , energetic and Strategic Hon Sosten Gwengwe as Minister of Finance. Hon Zikhale also anounced in Parliament that Nkhatabay district supports the Budget. Chiefs Fukamapiri , Zilakhoma and Malengamzoma of Nkhatabay are also in full support of the Current Budget .
