Concerned Mubas students to hold Kodokodo demos against poor living conditions

By Chisomo Phiri

The Concerned Students Movement (CSM), a movement that fights for students’ good conditions and welfare at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Science ( MUBAS) formerly the Polytechnic has challenged the school management that it will hold kodokodo demonstrations to force the school management improve the living conditions which it says are in a bad state.

Speaking with this publication, the leader of the movement Peters Monjeza said there are a lot of challenges that the students most especially the needy are facing at the institution which need a quick solution so as to make education quality for all.

Among other challenges, Monjeza said the management is failing to handle accommodation issues as it has introduced a new system of selecting students to be accommodated on the campus where only a certain group of students are selected all the time leaving others suffering.
” The management has introduced a new system authenticaticates fairness when selecting students on campus hostels but what we see is not the said fairness. The out numbered students who were given the accommodation last semester are the same who have been also given the accommodation this semester to begin in January next year yet we have many students who have never enjoyed the accommodation since selected at the school. Others are in third year and others are finishing but they have never stayed at the no campus, is that fairness?”, Said Monjeza.

Monjeza also blamed the government to stop providing free meals ( meal cut) to the students in public universities and colleges saying this is now contributing to poor quality of education in the country and that the government should in hurry revise the decision before things get much worse.
” The government should revise the decision of not providing free meals to the students. The students are suffering a lot. How can you expect good performance from such students without food. I am criticising anyone who took his hand to remove the programme”, He said.

He said if the management is not addressing the challenges, the movement is well prepared to hold the demostrations at the campus in January next year .
” There is nothing wrong with that since it is our right to hold the demostrations as long as we follow the procedures. There are a lot of irregularities done by our management and I can say we will protest against their actions. We are tired with injustice happening at our institution especially the way the management is granting accommodation” said Monjeza.

Malawi University of Business and Applied Science has over 7000 students of which only 850 are those who have been offered accommodation in the next semester to begin in January, 2022.

By Staff Reporter

Flames forward Khuda Muyaba on Sunday scored a brace in Polokwane City’s 3-2 win over JDR Stars in Glad Africa Championship.

This comes just three days after the striker claimed his first hat-trick in Polokwane’s 4-0 victory over Richards Bay on Wednesday.

Muyaba is the current leading scorer in the second- tier league after scoring six goals in six matches.

The former Moyale Barracks and Silver Strikers forward is aiming to win the Glad Africa Championship golden boot this season but faces competition from Black Leopards’ Tiklas Thutlwa who has so far scored four goals.

Muyaba joined Polokwane early last year when the team was in the DStv Premiership.

Polokwane has also two other Malawian players namely Dennis Chembezi who is a defender, and midfielder Mike Mkwate.

Wanderes Claim Bragging Rights In Blantyre Derby

Mighty Wanderers have upset bitter rivals Nyasa Big Bullets 1-0 in the Blantyre Derby at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday.

Playing in front of a sizeable crowd, the Nomads took the lead 30 minutes into the game through Vincent Nyanguru who was set up by man of the match Yamikani Chester.

Bullets tried to level the scores but Hassan Kajoke, Chiukepo Msowoya and Sankhani Mkandawire missed clear-cut chances.

In the second half Bullets coach Callisto Pasuwa made a number of changes bringing in Macfarren Mgwira for Hassan Kajoke,
Zicco Mkanda for Babatunde Adepoju and Alick Lungu for Yamikani Fodya.

This however did not yield anything as the People’s team still failed to find the back of the net.

On the other hand Wanderers brought in Rafick Namwera and Mike Kaziputa for Wisdom Mpinganjira and Vitumbiko Kumwenda.

It was a disappointing result for Bullets who were hoping to extend their lead on the log table after dropping 2 points against Mafco FC on Wednesday.

The win has taken Wanderers to 51 points from 27 games and they are on third position 5 points behind the Leaders.

Bullets remain on top with 56 points against second placed Silver Strikers’s 55 with the same number of games.

The People’s team will finish their campaign against Karonga United at home and Kamuzu Barracks away while the Central bankers are remaining with Moyale Barracks and Ekwendeni Hammers

In another game played on Sunday, a lone goal from Innocent Tanganyika gave Civil Service United a 1-0 victory against Blue Eagles at Civo Stadium.

Malawian Filmmaker ‘Sukez’ Claims ‘Best Director In Southern Africa’ Award

By McLloyd Kudzingo

Local filmmaker Sukez, real name Gift Sukali, last night won the Best Director award In Southern Africa for his movie Fatsani, at the 8th SOTAMBE International Film and Arts Festival (SOTAMBE IFAF) that took place in Kitwe, Zambia.

The festival took place at Tsogo Sun Garden Court Hotel and was presided over by Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo.

Inspired by real life events, Fatsani A Tale Of Survival, centres around a young girl who lives with her grandmother and is forced to sell bananas in the streets for survival after her school closed due to sanitation issues and corruption.

In the movie, Fatsani suffers various forms of abuse from the ones who are supposed to protect her.

While accepting his award at the ceremony, Sukali who is also president for Films Association of Malawi, thanked his team for putting up much efforts in making Fatsani one of the best films in Africa.

He also thanked Malawians and people from other parts of the Continent for their support towards his production.

SOTAMBE IFAF was established in 2014 on the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. In a local language SOTAMBE means “come and watch”.

This year, two Malawian films, _Fatsani_ and _Sowing Seeds_ were nominated for the awards at the regional Film festival.

The two competed with other productions from South Africa, Kenya, United States of America, Zambia, Cameroon, Uganda and Tanzania.
