In a bid to foster tolerance, coexistence, and national unity among Malawians, the Poetry Association of Malawi (PAM) Central Region Chapter has organized a poetry competition ahead of the 16th September 2025 general elections.
The competition, set to take place on 1st June 2025 at Madsoc Theatre in Area 2, Lilongwe, will feature both Chichewa and English categories, providing a platform for poets to showcase their talents while promoting peace and patriotism.
According to PAM Central Region Chairperson, Patwell Phiri, poetry remains one of the most powerful tools for promoting peace and unity, especially during critical times like elections.

“We believe that through poetry, we can inspire Malawians to embrace tolerance, coexistence, and national unity,” Phiri said in an interview with this publication.
The competition aims to bring together poets from different walks of life to share their perspectives on peace, unity, and patriotism through their work.
Winners in each category will receive cash prizes, with the first-place winner receiving K100,000, second place K50,000, and third place K30,000.
The event will be graced by Q Malewezi, Presidential Advisor on Creative Industries, who will likely bring remarks on the importance of arts in promoting national unity.
The competition will also feature performances by renowned poets such as Nyamalikiti Nthiwatiwa and Emmanuel Chikuse, who will undoubtedly inspire and entertain the audience with their poetic prowess.
This initiative by PAM Central Region Chapter is a timely reminder of the role that arts can play in promoting peace and unity in society.
As Malawi approaches the general elections, this competition serves as a platform for Malawians to reflect on the importance of peaceful coexistence and national unity.
The Poetry Association of Malawi’s efforts to promote peace and unity through poetry are commendable, and this competition is expected to bring together poets and art enthusiasts from across the country.
With its focus on promoting peace and unity, this event is a significant contribution to Malawi’s efforts to build a more harmonious and cohesive society.
