Elections body warns against Violence ahead of by-elections

By Ayamba Kandodo- MEC Stringer

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on Monday took advantage of the stakeholders meeting it held in Mangochi to warn candidates participating in the by-elections in the district to avoid indulging in violent acts, stressing that MEC will disqualify anyone who may be found in the wrong.

MEC is conducting by-elections in two constituencies in the district, namely Mangochi West and Mangochi North-East after the constituencies fell vacant due to nullification of 2019 results after two independent candidates obtained court injunction, challenging MEC for presiding over a flawed election.

The by-elections, which are slated to be conducted on 15th December is also expected to take place in Phalombe North due to the same nullification reasons.

Initially, the by-elections were scheduled to take place alongside the Makhuwira South Ward in Chikwawa East, Lilongwe North West and Karonga Central which MEC conducted on 10th November, 2020; but MEC deferred them.

This was after Mangochi North East candidate, Martin Sekati Nyengo obtained a court injunction, challenging MEC’s decision to conduct fresh registration and allow new candidates to contest, a development that later saw Nyengo wining the case, thereby, disturbing the electoral calendar.

But speaking during the meeting, MEC director of media and public relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa seized the gathering’s opportunity to send a warning shot to all the candidates to void inciting violence, saying MEC wants credible and successful by-elections.

“The commission is very eager and ready to conduct by-elections in these three constituencies as per the court’s order. I must say we are very much committed to embark on activities that will see us conduct a free, fair and credible election,” he explained.

“Therefore, let me urge all the competing candidates to refrain from instigating violence. Should there be any violence which the commission establishes that you have perpetrated, we don’t have choice but disqualifying you,” he warned.

To this end, he challenged the candidates to strive at offering issue-based campaign, tipping that it is the only panacea that can help them win the election than winning votes through intimidations.

In his remarks, one of the stakeholders, Turner Banda from National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Public Trust urged MEC to ensure training of candidates monitors if the electoral body is to minimise cases of violence during the voting day.

On his part, Mangochi district council director of administration, Dominic Mwandira thanked MEC for the meeting, saying the activities the meeting highlighted will help stakeholders to follow the events leading to the by-elections, noting this fosters transparency and accountability.

Comedian Daliso Chaponda BBC show to return for third series

The UK based Malawian Comedian Daliso Chaponda is to return to BBC Radio 4 . His Citizen Of Nowhere is set for a third series and will be addressing the coronavirus crisis.

Set to record next summer, the latest episodes of the radio series will be about “hope” Chaponda has said.

Daliso Chaponda

“Because it has mostly been written so far during Covid, it is very much about hope in the face of hopeless situations”, the former Britain’s Got Talent finalist told an online audience at The University of Wolverhampton, in a talk titled “Joking about Race, Politics and Your Lovelife without Offending People”.

“It’s very much like not giving in to despair, ways of coping” he said. “Each episode has a theme and there’s going to be an episode of blame. There was a lot of worrying, blaming different groups for Covid. So there’s an episode on blame and forgiveness and then other episodes with how you cope with despair.”

Citizen Of Nowhere‘s initial four-episode series aired in 2018, following Chaponda’s BGT success the year before. It was followed by a second series in 2019.

“So the first series of Citizen Of Nowhere was very much concerned with history and immigration” he recalled. “It was mainly about colonialism, slavery and then it was also talking about things like immigration and interaction between different societies. That was what was really on my mind back then.

“Then the next series was very much about, interestingly, cancel culture and about what’s appropriate to say, what’s not appropriate to say,. That was probably what motivated me.”

Chaponda, who is based in the UK, also disclosed that he’d been against casting James Quinn as the patrician voice of the Establishment in the series, and how that had shaped the writing.

Citizen Of Nowhere is produced by Carl Cooper. Chaponda , son of former cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament Dr George Chaponda has performed several times in Malawi

According to the available information George Mkandawire was residing in Zambia and that is where he has died . Details Surrounding his death are still sketchy.

His younger brother Charles Mkandawire, who is based in Cape Town, South Africa, said as a family they are shocked to hear of George’s passing. He said the singer didn’t indicate in any way that he was sick. “This is sudden death and is shocking, ” he said.

Mkandawire said details about the burial arrangements will be communicated in due course but indicated that vigil will be held in Ndirande, Blantyre where George’s parents stay.

The Late George Mkandawire

George burst onto the gospel scene close to two decades ago when he released his smash hit album “Nkhampenjanga” . Described as arguably the best vocalist to hit the gospel scene, Mkandawire produced a string of hits and established himself as one of the gospel giants . George, who was born in 1974, hailed from Nkombezi village in Rumphi district.

After spending some time in the United Kingdom, the singer returned to Malawi where he continues with his music exploits . Rumours of some scandals involving the singers personal life threatened to derail his career. He went into hibernation and is reported that it is during this time that he left Malawi to live in Zambia.

Mkandawire resurfaced last year with news that he had signed for Major 1 Records which is owned by Prophet Shephard Bushiri.

Several high profile people have paid tribute to the fallen star. Reggae Singer Limbani Banda Dube wrote “The only artist I have fought with … But in the end we became best friends … I could follow him where ever he was… He could make sure I Know where he is ! We did together a track called mwandikondera 2008… The Great George … We spoke some weeks ago ….and you lied to me that you are coming this december… Was that a gudbye? George my dear “. Former Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) president, Chimwemwe Mhango, also said he was shocked by Mkandawire’s death, saying they were about to do a project together.

Veteran gospel singer Wycliffe Chimwendo wrote “He was naturally a good singer with that sweet and captivating voice. Death has robbed us a talent. It has stolen a Gem that made Malawian gospel music good ” . Malawi Congress Party Diaspora leader Chalo Mvula also paid his tribute describing George as a talented humble soul ” We lived together in Manchester and went to the same church, he was a genuinely nice, extremely talented and humble ” said Mvula.

Why is Tonse hiring Tony Blair ? off the wall of Onjezani Kenani

Remember when Mrs Joyce Banda was president of the Republic and Malawians complained that the country was being run by the West?

Among others, she had Tony Blair and his team advising her how to run the affairs of government. That Tony Blair – the former UK prime minister who, after leaving 10 Downing Street, established an institute that now goes around advising African governments how to run their countries. They do this by establishing results delivery units within each country’s highest office.

During Joyce Banda’s doomed two years, Tony and his team established one such Delivery Unit within State House and the Office of the President and Cabinet. A year later, cashgate happened. All hell broke loose. Stuff hit the ceiling. Keen to maintain his image, Tony and his team dumped JB, fled Malawi and distanced themselves from the cashgate scandal. They knew nothing about it, they didn’t enable it, they said. Yet nobody really knows how much they knew (or didn’t know) about the scandal. Some of their closest government collaborators were later arrested.

Now Tony and his team are coming back to Malawi to work with the government of Chakwera and Chilima.

Tony Blair and Malawi Former President Joyce Banda

According to their website: “The Blair Institute is looking to set up a new project to support the Government of Malawi to strengthen its delivery and implementation mechanisms. This is likely to include a delivery function in State House, but also potentially support other parts of the Presidency e.g. communications, international affairs.

The Project will seek to strengthen connections with other key ministries and agencies, both in the centre (the Vice President’s Office and the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Economic Planning) as well as key sector Ministries, such as the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Malawi Investment and Trade Centre and the Ministries covering infrastructure. Our Malawi team may extend to include advisors in these or other Ministries, depending on the sectoral priorities of the Presidency.”

I have several questions: Why did Tony and his team leave in the first instance? What role did they play in cashgate? How much did they know?Given the plethora of advisors the president has surrounded himself with, what can a bunch of foreign advisors who know little to nothing about Malawi offer the president and the country?

Isn’t it the President and Vice President’s job to “deliver” results for Malawians?Isn’t that what they promised?

What is the role of the civil service if results delivery is outsourced to an external group of foreign advisors?

Is this part of the mindset change that the veep has been evangelizing to us all? And finally, what does Joyce Banda think of this comeback?

I have just finished reading the financial report of the Tony Blair Institute, dated 2018. In that year, they received $17 million from African governments, out of their total annual revenue of $45 million. What they do in other countries in Africa is their business, I will not talk about it, but I want to react to the State House media briefing this morning.”

Last year,” I’m paraphrasing State House Director of Communications, Sean Kampondeni, “elections were fraught with severe irregularities. That pointed to gaps in our governance structures. For this and other reasons, the President decided to engage the Tony Blair Institute to provide expertise with strengthening our governance institutions.” More or less. What Jane Ansah and her commissioners did was a crime. They sat down to commit a crime. You cannot use that crime to justify the hiring of the Tony Blair Institute. In fact, Justice Chifundo Kachale, who replaced Jane Ansah, was able to do an excellent job without Tony Blair’s involvement.

As we speak, he and his team continue to do an excellent job.If you used that crime to justify the hiring of Tony Blair, it means you do not know what you are doing. Those were criminals, they could exist in any system with or without Tony Blair. Secondly, without showing the contract with the Tony Blair Institute to Malawians, we are told, by word of mouth, that Malawians will not pay a single penny towards the Tony Blair Institute.

This is an institute that plans to hire nine people for the Malawi project. The last time they were here in 2012 to 2014, the eight people they hired at the time:-demanded houses with swimming pools;-big cars with fuel paid for;-flying in business class;-salaries of K6.1 million per person per month. All paid for by the sweat of the poor.As can be seen from their financial report, the Tony Blair Institute does not go around like Father Christmas with a bag full of cash, doling the cash out to starving African nations. On the contrary, African nations pay the institute for any services it provides.
