Former MBC Director General Sumbuleta arrested

Embattled Former Director General of Malawi Broadcasting Station ( MBC) Aubrey Sumbuleta has been arrested on charges related to abuse of office.

Sumbuleta spent Tuesday night at Blantyre Police Station after being picked by Fiscal Police.

National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera has today confirmed of the development, saying his arrest is in connection with alleged fraudulent purchase of vehicles when he was a boss at MBC.

” He is implemented in a fraudulent procurement process of some company vehicles when he was heading the parastatal. He is currently held at Blantyre Police Station and will appear in court within 48 hours of his arrest,” confirmed Kadadzera.

In October 2021, Sumbuleta denied all seven counts levelled against him.

He faced two sexual harassment counts, two indicent assault counts and three counts of abuse of office.

He was suspected of committing the offenses in 2010 and 2014.

One of the Pioneers of Ragga Music in Malawi TearGas has died

One of the pioneers of Reggae Dancehall Music in Malawi ,TearGas has died. The announcement was made by another Veteran Dancehall artists Anne Matumbi when he posted on his Facebook page.

TearGas , whose real name was Leonard Chongwe was dominant in the Ragga scene in the late 90’s making his first breakthrough on Ragga Street, a music programme that was aired on MBC Radio 2 by Tailos Bakili aka DJ Tai B. After releasing so many singles that include the hit “oneness” which was done alongside Anne Matumbi, The Late Dr Lizad and San B as part of the group called DAST

TearGas eventually dropped his first full album that included the hit “Warn Dem Still” which enjoyed alot of airplay

Writing his tribute , Anne Matumbi wrote

“You are gone but you will still be unforgettable to Malawi Dancehall fraternity, In 1998 we used to enjoy your Caribbean accent with Tailosi Bakili on Radio 2fm every Friday in the Ragga street show, I can’t forget our first session at MC studio with Chuma Soko and then we formed a group called DAST which was named after our names Dr Lizard, Anne Matumbi, Teargas and San B, we did one song by then “ONENESS” and it was all over the nation”

Other old-time dancehall Artis have also shared their tributes. Chalo Mvula aka Lover Cham said the death of TearGas is a blow to all Dancehall music lovers as he was a legend of the game , a pioneer who paved the way for most of the other artists.

Stanley Mthenga of the Mphinji na Mkazache fame wrote “TearGas was huge talent but humble and was also a friend to me. Everytime we met we had good chat and discussed music. We encouraged each other to push on in our different genres. He is the one who introduced YouTube to me and he uploaded two of my songs onto his channel around 2012. Fare thee well jezzman”

Dr Lizad young brother Manasseh Chisiza aka Ostrich wrote “We talked a lot last year… possible projects and the like… and since this year started we haven’t talked n just to hear the sad news. I always see my late bro in his friends. Recalling the days of DAST and Ragga Street with Tai B… and the songs; oneness, praise him de fada and afraid of HIV in Lizad’s albums…rest well my bro… you were a rare talent”

For year TearGas took himself out of the music scene to focus on other things in life. He told journalists at some point that he took time to learn to play music instruments and learn music production. He resurface again in 2010 when he worked on an album called
Reporting for Duty which was produced by Tiya Chalamwendo. By this time TearGas had changed his style from hardcore Ragga to singjay dancehall style.

Wanderers sign Ex Nyasa defender Gabeya and Balakasi from Ntopwa

Mighty Wanderers have signed former Nyasa Big Bullets defender, Miracle Gabeya and midfielder Joseph Balakasi from Ntopwa.

Gabeya has signed for the nomads after he declined a contract offer from Bullets due to disagreements in terms he was being offered.

Mvula has disclosed that Gabeya has signed a 2 year contract while former Ntompwa midfielder Joseph Balakasi has signed a 3 year contract.

Gabeya becomes the second key player to shift allegiance from Bullets to their fierce rivals after Chiukepo Msowoya also joined Wanderers following his release by the former.

Meanwhile,Yunus Sherif, Lucky Malata,Simion Singa are doubtful if they will play for the Lali Lubani Road side in the upcoming 2022 football season.

Norway, IFAD commit to funding Malawi agriculture

The Government of Norway and International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) have committed to pumping in more resources to Government of Malawi to develop its agricultural activities.

Norway’s Minister of International Development, Anne Beathe Tvinnriem and IFAD President, Gilbert Houngbo, made the commitment on Monday after meeting State President, Dr Lazarus Chakwera and Ministry of Agriculture officials at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

In an interview, Norway’s Minister of International Development (Tvinnriem) said her country highly prioritises agriculture and climate adaptation, hence will continue to fund the sectors in Malawi.“The Government of Norway has said in international development portfolio, the support to food security and climate adaptation in agriculture is highly prioritized and for a country like Malawi, that is very essential, “She said.

Malawi’s Minister of Agriculture, Robin Lowe, expressed pleasure that they have successfully managed to win Norway and IFAD’s confidence. Lowe thanked the Norway Minister and Houngbo for undertaking a joint visit to Malawi saying the government appreciates the partnership in advancing the countrys development.

Malawian national among those arrested for the kidnap of businessman in South Africa

A Malawian national has been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a businessman in South Africa. South African Police rescued Vereeniging businessman Zaheer Asmal who was kidnapped from his business premises on Friday last week. Asmal is the owner of Fred’s Hardware in De Deur, in the south of Jobur

According to Police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe ,just before midnight on Monday, the task team led a multi-disciplinary operation consisting of members of the special task force (STF), the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), and assisted by private security.

“The team swooped in at three identified addresses, one in Lenasia South where the victim was found unharmed.

“At this address, the police arrested the owner of the property, a 70-year-old Mozambican national,” said Mathe.

At the second address in Ennerdale, police found a dark grey Toyota Hilux bakkie and fake registration number plates which were allegedly utilised in committing the crime.

“One suspect, a Malawian national was arrested,” said Mathe.

“When the police arrived at the third address in Roodepoort, the police were met with gunfire, (but) fortunately none of the task team members sustained any injuries.

“One suspect, a South African national was arrested.

“One unlicensed firearm was also seized.”

All three suspects are facing charges relating to kidnapping and robbery with aggravated circumstances.
