New Movie ‘Fatsani’ to launch next year

Lilongwe-based media consultancy and advertising agency, HD Plus Creations, says it has scheduled to launch its movie titled ‘Fatsani’ on April 30, 2021 after failing to do so in September, this year (2020).

The storyline of the movie focuses on a girl who was being forced to sell merchandise after her school was closed on issues of corruption.

In the process, the girl faces different forms of abuse from people who are supposed to protect her. Later, she speaks out about the abuses to the public and becomes a hero.

Speaking to journalists in Lilongwe on Friday, HD Plus Creations Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Gift Sukali popularly known as Sukez, said his company failed to launch the movie in September because of COVID-19 and other challenges.

“This year, so many things have happened, especially COVID-19 pandemic which has hindered a lot of things in terms of production as well as limiting gatherings.

“Another thing is that we had elections in the country, we had to shift the dates to give space for the election.

“In addition, we had financial hiccups to finalise everything concerning the launch of the movie. So, we decided to shift it to next year to cater for all our plans which we have for the launch,” Sukez explained.

He added that currently, his company is working to finalise everything regarding the launch of the movie.

“The film is coming out on April 30, 2021 and will be premiered in Lilongwe at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC).

“We are working tirelessly to finalise everything about the launch of the movie and people should expect to patronise a red-carpet event which will bring first cinema experience in Malawi.

“Additionally, we are looking at international guests to be part of the event,” he said.

In his comment, HD Plus Creations Creative Director who is also the producer of the movie, Hastings Golosi, said people should get set for the launch of the movie.

According to Golosi, the movie has topics which are based on true events and seeks to bring change in the country.

“The movie covers various topics based on true events which include child labour, gender based violence (GBV), corruption and, girls and women empowerment, hence my call for all Malawians to be part of the launch to watch the movie,” said Golosi.

He said the movie seeks to bring change in the country.

Vice President Chilima Outline Public reforms agenda

Public sector reforms are there to “create a better Malawi,” Malawi’s Vice President said on Monday at the signing ceremony of public sector reforms performance contracts.

Chilima, who is also the Minister responsible for Economic Planning and Public Sector Reforms, said the contracts reflected “renewed impetus” to provide efficient services and being accountable to Malawians.He said the reforms cover legislative and policy, constitutional, financial sustainability, infrastructure development and managemwnt and adminstrative reforms

.On agriculture, he said the reforms will see the introduction of a fertliser company “which will help the country move forward.”Malawi spends over K160 billion to import fertiliser for millions of citizens.The VP said reforms at grain marketer ADMARC will aim to see the company stifled by huge debts to fibancially sustain itself.

In the energy sector, Chilima said the reforms seek a turnaround strategy for ESCOM ” to become financially health.”Power generator EGENCO will need to double its output from 370 megawatts in the next two years, the VP said.”We believe with improved power supply, it’s an important catalyst for mining,” he added.

Malawi economists call for home grown solutions to economic challenges

Malawi’s economists say home grown solutions should be prioritised if the country has to make meaningful progress in all sectors of the economy. The economists reached the consensus at the end of a two day annual conference of Economics Association of Malawi ( ECAMA) that zeroed in on economic stabilization in light of external shocks.

Chancellor College’s Associate Professor Ronald Mangani led the discussion with his presentation titled ‘The Quest for Pragmatic Economic Management in Malawi’.Mangani argued that for a long time the country has been stuck with structural programmes that do not fit perfectly with the reality on the ground hence the call for a new thinking and deep analysis on what works for the country.“The Success of Neo-liberalism is in its failure. Comprehensive policy reforms dangled in return for Western aid since 1981 need to be revisited,” he said.

Ecama’s president Lauryn Nyasulu said the economists’ body appreciates the responsibility it has to play in turning around the fortunes of the country through constructive submissions to Government on key economic matters. She said: “As an association we are supposed to provide economic advice to Government and we will make sure this advice is research based.”

Tributes pour as former Miss Malawi Blandina Khondowe dies

Death has been announced of a former Malawi beauty queen Blandina Khondowe. The 40 year old died on Saturday morning . The Former Miss Malawi was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2013 , although the cancer went into remission. Recently she had been struggling again after the cancer returned in 2017 which has resulted in her death.

Blandina Khondowe, who bravely fought cancer for so many years, is being remembered by Malawians as a fearless fighter for justice and better treatment and care for cancer patients. Blandina, who had won the Miss Malawi crown in 2002, was pronounced dead at Spring Valley Private Hospital in Area 10 in Lilongwe.

Blandina was also a passionate political activist. After getting involved with MCP while it was still in opposition , she found herself to be among the early activists of the newly formed UTM. A tribute message has been posted on UTM pages which signed by Vice president Saulos Chilima and his wife Mary which reads ” A beautiful soul gone too soon, what a devastation to lose a great comrade, a consummate patriot, a fearless and courageous fighter”

A civil servant, the former beauty queen,  was rushed to the hospital after she reportedly collapsed at home. Following her diagnosis and later survival, she became a passionate breast cancer advocate through the two initiatives she founded – Think Pink Malawi (in 2013) and later, Hope for Cancer Foundation (in 2015).

Details of the Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced .

Anna Kachikho pulls out of race leaving DPP with no candidate

Main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) parliamentary candidate for Phalombe north has pulled out of the race.

But Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Chifundo Kachale has not given reasons why Anna Kachikho has withdrawn from the race.

Kachale, speaking at a new conference in Lilongwe, also said Patrick Million, an independent candidate for the same constituency has also made withdrawn from the parliamentary race.

He said their nomination fees have been forfeited and constituents will be notified of the withdrawal.

Kachale , a High Court judge reminded all electoral stakeholders, political parties

and the electorate that it is an offence to force, induce or influence a candidate to withdraw from an election.

He said: “Section 46 (5) of the Parliamentary and Presidential Elections Act says that a withdrawal of a candidate must be voluntary and must be under oath sworn by the candidate before a commissioner for oaths. As we go into these by-elections let everyone be aware of these provisions and avoid contravening them.”

The contest will be  between two independent candidates  Mavuto Bokosi,  Ms Promise Salima as well as  UTM Party candidate Justin Samuel Mokowa and  Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate  Esther Wadi Kazembe .

The head of the electoral body has also announced that by-elections in three other remaining  constituencies will be on December 15, 2020.

According to Kachale, Mangochi west Constituency has 27, 190 registered voters while Mangochi North East has 31, 501 registered voters and Phalombe North has 28, 670 registered.

He says, only those who registered in the last year’s election will be allowed to vote as per the court ruling.

Kachale has also called on political parties and voters to observe Covid19 measures during the polling day.
