Tonse Alliance! you are on camera

By Cosmas Steve Mvula

HD Plus is not the company; nor is it the modern drone. It’s the human eye. Just as the old say that all talk and no action signals imbecility to the nth degree you, Tonse Alliance, have all the time and space to dance to your own ready-made beat; your promises.

The contentious 23rd June 2020 elections’ results was but a passport to high office whilst announcing the elapse of lip-service of the politicos on one end and an end of ears-pricking the citizenry were obliged to in those grand rallies and all media platforms on the other end. Much as we, the citizenry, aren’t adept at dancing we cherish our blessings of our eyes to see and our minds to judge. And we will guard our blessings for they are our valuable assets.

Our eyes await actions of a government that promised a lot (or was it enough) to the citizens. Lest you forget, your agenda to winning the elections wobbled from poverty eradication to social development which convinced the fifty eight percent of Malawians to vote for Tonse Alliance.
As the citizenry we’re raring to see an end to all politically connected outstanding cases you promised us to push to the very end once voted to power. This is time to attrite the bad actions of the past- the DPP- regime which played hide and seek to uphold the rule of law.

Not forgotten on those cases is that of our brother the late Robert Chasowa (may his soul rest in eternal peace). You promised us to see an end to this case and we’re waiting keenly on how this burning issue will cease fire and how the president will keep no sacred cows hiding in the alliance. We assume this case is as simple as ABC to close as you implicitly communicated.
Before our eyes too is the popular universal subsidy (“universal” as per its meaning and not the diluted version you want to surprise us with) which we expect to be operational beginning 2020/2021 growing season. The majority votes you wooed considering that many Malawians depend on agriculture need a special promised treatment..

Our minds still have a grip on the importance of Access to information Law. Tonse alliance! Through your parties you did all you did to push the past regime on enacting the aforesaid law and we as well expect you to find it easier to operationalize what you pushed for.
As this is the government of people, by people and for people we aren’t blind on the observations made by the current president and his vice that the president’s powers crave a reduction. And not only that, the description of the vice president’s duties is also on top of the list of the deliverables unlike being a derogatory position as it has always been. We chiefly believe that this development will enhance efficiency and effectiveness of the highest offices of the land.

Tonse Alliance! We’re as well waiting to see the promised relief to the needy and disadvantaged university students. You promised to provide the needy and disadvantaged students with laptops each to ease their studies. We thank you in advance for the initiative which will enhance human capital development without delay at the expense of future Malawi

Our memories are still fresh on bringing an end to fraud and corruption. On the other hand, as you have already stared taking steps to bring to book those suspected to have stolen taxpayers money we ask you to continue at the same pace to closing those cases whilst at the same time staying awake to the control measures you have put in place.

Tonse Alliance! We’re also waiting for the incentives to the Financial Service Providers so that needs and wants of young entrepreneurs are identified before the design of specifics products. This initiative will complement the MEDF loans and eventually the creation of the promised one million jobs will cease being a dream but a reality.
Of course your in-tray is already full as per your promises but much as we identify ourselves with that fact we expect you to act with full knowledge that five years isn’t anyhow far. We will judge you as per your actions.

Mtambo pays tribute to Dedza Mob justice victim as he calls for more Civic Awareness.

0

Civic Education and National Unity Minister Timothy Mtambo  has called for more civic awareness on issues regarding mob justice . He was speaking on Friday in Dedza where he held a Civic awareness engagement on mob Justice. The area has been a scene of a recent incident where a 70 year old woman, Stella Chigule, was murdered by unknown assailants on witchcraft accusations.

Speaking at the meeting which he had with the locals and the police Mtambo said he was shocked to learn of the manner in which the late Stella Chigule died. “We have come here to pay respect to the soul of our late grandmother “ .  The minister said State President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has already expressed his shock with what happenned in Dedza and also on the escalating incidents of Mob justice and other incidents that highlights the problem of lack respect for the rule of law.

Mtambo : We have to live in peace

Mtambo acknowledged that the issues of witchcraft are complex to deal with but he was optimistic that with a well executed civic awareness campaign, people will begin to understand the need to involve the police and traditional leaders to help sort out the issues, rather than quickly opting in taking the law into their own hands.

The Minister assured the locals that government will do its best  to make sure that peace prevails within the communities  “ Malawi is a God fearing Nation  and we are a country governed by  laws  that need to be respected . Our problems should be resolved amicably. We need to live in peace  and harmony and always strive to maintain peace” said the Minister

Mtambo also spoke of the need to build good relationship between the police and the communities. He said people should not be afraid to approach the police  if they have any problems  and also urged the police to make sure that they work towards gaining trust of the locals . In so doing , the Minister argued that it will mitigate the possibility of people resorting to mob justice when they know Police is available. He also urged the locals to use religious and Traditional leaders who are also key in resolving most of the issues that arise s in the communities.

Also Present during the engagement was the Member of parliament for the area(Dedza North) Hon Savero Kafwafwa, Senior Chief Sultan Tambala and the Police Commissioner.

Mutharika wanted to build more interchanges-Chakwera done nothing so far

0

Former President Peter Mutharika has claimed that his government had plans for further more groundbreaking projects that would have transformed Malawis infrastructure landscape. Mutharika was responding to questions from reporters during a news conference he held at his retirement home in Mangochi on Friday.

Mutharika however, had no kind words for the incumbent Dr Lazarus Chakwera saying he cannot rate the performance of President Chakwera  because to him, nothing has been done apart from inspecting, opening and monitoring the projects initiated by the previous regime.

Mutharika: Chakwera hasnt done much

Asked how he would rate President Chakwera’s first 100 days in office, Mutharika said there was nothing much new his successor has done.

“I don’t see much has been done ; so far  the President is inspecting my projects that I did,” said Mutharika.

He cited the  Area 18 Interchange which his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) asked government the country to honour Mutharika by naming the interchange after him.

Mutharika also prided himself  for initiating the Grand Business Park in Lilongwe, saying when completed, people will not be travelling to China to buy things as most of the materials will be found at the Park. “Malawi will be a hub of whole southern Africa region.,” he pointed out.

Mutharika also said Chakwera on Friday performed the official opening of the five -star Golden Peacock in Blantyre which was initiated during his tenure. “I am glad that the government has decided to adopt our projects and continue with them. They are continuing  with our policies,” said Mutharika

“So, at the moment I can’t rate them because I have seen what they have done,” he added.

Mutharika said he embarked on a number of projects to develop the country and his role cannot go unappreciated. The former President said he had plans to construct a traffic interchange at Chichiri roundabout in Blantyre and a flyover from clocktower all the way to Mount Soche Hotel. He also said he had plans to construct a national airport in Mangochi

Asked if he has been in contact with President Chakwera and how was their relationship, Mutharika said he could not comment on that  as a matter of  “privacy”.

But said: “Later I will comment about it but now let me respect the privacy on that.”

Said Mutharika:“I don’t want to put obstacles in the way of the new president, I want to give him a chance to run this country. He won the elections to run this country and use his policies o for the benefit of this country.”

He added that being president is a difficult job because the president deals with a lot of people.

Mutharika nonetheless  repeated his appeal  to Malawian people to respect the presidency because it is a sacred office, heart and soul of the nation.

In search of the Diaspora role in the new Tonse Government

Chalo’s Sagacity

The ever-growing number of Malawians living in diaspora presents either a problem or an opportunity for the new Tonse Government. While it is common that most of Malawians who left the country, left in search of opportunities, be it academic or economic, there is no denial that Malawi has the highest number of diasporas now than it has ever been in the past. The new Tonse alliance government finds itself with a challenge of either ignoring this cohort of Malawians or embrace them with the possibility of exploring the many opportunities that they can bring to the country

If the new government decides not to engage the diaspora in its policy formulation and other plans, it will be a slap in the face for a cross section of dedicated young Malawians who sacrificed much of their time in helping most of the parties in Tonse Alliance in their fight against the previous regime of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). It is now on record that both 2019 and 2020 elections in Malawi received the greatest diaspora involvement ever. It is during this time that we saw the activities of Malawi Congress Party, UTM and DPP Diaspora wings. These political activists delivered an impressive social media campaign for their respective parties as well as helping fund campaign activities on the ground. MCP and UTM Diaspora Wings for instance made a huge contribution of funds towards election monitoring to try cement the safeguarding of the votes.

As the Tonse philosophy pushes towards an inclusive government, the main question remains as how the new government will do it differently than the previous regimes in their engagement with the diaspora community. The diaspora policy that was drafted during the time when Dr Emmanuel Fabiano was the Foreign Minister provided so much hope  in efforts towards inclusion of the diaspora. Yes, in it, were detailed plans on how the government will engage with the diaspora.  Sadly, just as many government policies, the story end with the final release of the policy copy. Nothing much happened and the diaspora soon found itself on the same position they have always been, that of sending remittances back home to their families. Remittances themselves are a big boost to the economy, but the challenge now is that the diaspora demographic will need to be used more. The current crop of diasporas comprises of largely young, very educated and skilful Malawians. The growing interest in political activism that happened is a testament that many of them are ready to serve their country.

Finance Minister Felix Mlusu in his budget delivery, probably gave us a hint that the Tonse government wants to explore more ways of engaging the diaspora.  In the budget, he made mention that government through the Reserve Bank will be exploring possibility of a “Diaspora Development Fund” aimed at helping those in diaspora invest back home. If this materialises, it might be a game changer. Investment is one area that government will benefit from those in diaspora, especially at a time when it is aimed at accomplishing their flagship manifesto of creating of 1 million jobs. President Chakwera addressed investors through the Invest in Africa initiative recently. Attraction of foreign direct investment (FDI) is a necessary thing for Malawi, but what will be exciting enough is to see Malawians in diaspora investing back home. Many are ready to establish businesses back home. At the same time, Diaspora are perfect trade ambassadors for Malawi, who through their networks can act as brokers to get investors notice Malawi. The country will also benefit a lot in its effort to develop tourism as those in diaspora are well placed to use word of mouth to get their friends, neighbours and work colleagues travel to see Malawi as tourists.

The diaspora skills are not only restricted to business. The healthcare sector is another area that can benefit a lot. Already we have a number of groups that fundraise to donate to Malawian hospitals which is a good initiative. What will even be good is the government understanding that Malawi has a lot of nurses, doctors, social workers and public health specialists who are willing to share their skills with Malawi, but only needs an avenue that should be led by the government.

Time has come when practically Malawi must engage with those in Diaspora. Globalisation has ushered the world into one single market and the presence of Malawians in diaspora provides the government an already capable network that needs to be tapped into. Their Skills, resources and willingness to do something for their country is the patriotism that will be on benefit not only to the government but to every Malawian.
