Flames Coach Meck Mwase says he will give all the 19 players a run during Wednesday’s international friendly match against Ethiopia.

The Flames line up against Ethiopia at the Bar Dar Stadium on Wednesday afternoon in preparation for the two 2022 AFCON qualifying matches against South Sudan and Uganda later this month.

The squad in Ethiopia comprises of 16 locally-based and 3 foreign players namely Ethiopia based Robin Ngalande and Mozambique duo of captain John Banda and Schumacher Kuwali.

Flames Line up

Speaking after the team’s training session at the match venue on Tuesday afternoon, Mwase said he would like to assess every player and hence the decision to see all in action.

“We have settled very well and the morale is good. The pitch is good the only concern is the weather, as it is very hot. But that will work to our advantage for the boys to acclimatize as the same weather awaits us in Khartoum next week.

“We are expecting a win and a very good game. A victory will lift the boys spirits going into Sudan match. We are going to use every player so that we see who is ready to do the job next week,” he said.

On Ngalande, who has joined the team for the first time since November 2019, Mwase said: “He is doing good at his club and this is why we picked him. He has not been with us for a year but we believe he deserves to be here if his current club form is anything to go by. So far he looks happy to be back and fight for his place.”

The rest of the of the foreign-based players will fly directly to Sudan.

By Andrew Nyondo

Homeland Security Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda has told Parliament that government is introducing a deliberate policy to allow Kabaza operators be trained and certified both at district and Traditional Authority levels. The Mininister says, the development follows a booming of unlicenced Kabaza operators in rural areas, where numerous accidental deaths were reported.

He said: “We are coming up with decentralisation policy where by kabaza operators will be undergoing training at both district and Traditional Authority levels at a reduced fee. The Ministry of Transport will arrange a programme to train Kabaza operators and certify them. This will also reduce costs for operators because trainings will be offered at a reduced fee.”

Kabaza Operators

The Minister was responding to questions from Members of Parliament (MPs), who wanted to know challenges which unregulated Kabaza operators are facing in their localities.

Government wants the Kabaza industry be regulated as one way of reducing accidental deaths. Statistics indicate that over 800 people were killed in motocycle accidents between 2019 and 2020.

People of Karonga North West Constituency have been urged to rally behind Malawi Congress Party and vote for its candidate Daniel Chitonya in the forthcoming by-elections if the area is to have meaningful developments.

The remarks were made on Saturday afternoon when several party officials conducted party campaign rallies ahead of March 30, 2021 Parliamentary by-election in Karonga North West Constituency.

Speaking at Chinsebe and Baka, National Youth Director in the Malawi Congress Party who is also Minister of Homeland Security and a Member of Parliament for Dowa East, Honorable Richard Chimwendo Banda said time has come for the people of Karonga North West to enjoy developments and be beneficiaries of government policies and projects, saying for the past 26 years the constituency has suffered a lot due to politics of regionalism, a thing he described as a denial for their right to development as Malawians.

Chimwendo while bemoaning the behaviour of other politicians who remove or destroy structures once they lose elections, described Daniel Chitonya as a mature and dedicated candidate who will serve his constituents well in and outside Parliament, for he has their welfare at heart. On dilapidated roads, unfinished school blocks and health facilities, Chimwendo Banda assured the constituents that the Chakwera led government will soon help them so that they too become beneficiaries of government policies and developments.

Chimwendo then thanked Abraham Mwakhwawa who contested on primaries for democratically accepting defeat and pledging his total support for Daniel Chitonya, saying this has shown how democracy and unity is growing within Malawi Congress Party.

Karonga North West Constituency fell vacant following the death of Honorable James Bond Kamwambi who succumbed to Covid-19 to become the second Member of Parliament from Karonga to succumb to the pandemic.

Over 49,000 registered voters are expected to cast their vote in the 35 centers of Karonga North West constituency which is among six constituencies and one ward where MEC is scheduled to conduct by-elections on March 30 this year.

Minister Richard Chimwendo engages Malawians in the diaspora- Calls for more engagement at policy level

By staff reporter

The Minister of Homeland Security, who is also the Director of Youth in the Malawi Congress Party has called for more active participation of Malawians living in the diaspora especially in policy matters. He was speaking on Sunday  at a virtual meeting that was organising by the Malawi Congress Party Diaspora Network (MCPDN) and featured Malawians from various parts of the world including UK, USA, Republic of Ireland RSA, Canada, UAE and, any others

In his address to the participants Chimwendo said the current regime is very much aware of the role the diaspora played politically  in helping to  get rid of the previous DPP regime “ let me assure you that we know of the role that you played and role that you continue to play” said Chimwendo . The minister went on to highlight of what has been happening since Tonse government was ushered in power. He said President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has been at the forefront of servant leadership that is aimed at bringing discipline and responsibility in the way government is run. He said the idea is to bring trust to the power with their government so that Malawians should now know that the new regime is aimed at benefitting the many and not just a few.

Well coordinated diaspora vital – Hon Richard Chimwendo

Chimwendo also spoke highly of the Agriculture input program (AIP), the flagship initiative that was at the heart of campaign promises when people were promised cheap fertiliser. He said despite the challenges that were faced in trying to implement this program, it has ended up being a success with over 3.5 million Malawians benefitting from cheap fertiliser that guarantees that with good rains, probability of bumper harvest is high.

Chimwendo also reassured the diaspora that the issue of Dual citizenship is not dead, and that government is still working on it. He said the bill was already assented and that government is working of the operationalisation of it – something which is likely to happen before the end of the year.

Malawi Congress Party Diaspora Network Deputy communication director Nic Thindwa told Nyasa Times that the diaspora also used the opportunity to voice out some of the concerns that they thought the minister and his ministry should look at. Thindwa said among the other issues the diaspora raised concerns for are; the problems many of them face in trying to renew their passports. They asked the minister if the renewal system can be made easy, as many of them still struggle even when using the embassies in their respective countries. Thindwa said the diaspora also requested if the process of applying for ’citizenship identity cards’ can be facilitated in the embassies for the diaspora.

Members of the diaspora also expressed concern over the recent increase of rape and defilement cases. The minister said his ministry is aware and is doing its best to make sure that those caught are brought before prosecution as quickly as possible. The diaspora proposed the need for Malawi to have a sex offenders registers that can enable those with previous sex crimes to be barred from certain jobs or having access to kids or vulnerable people. The minister said work of developing a sex offenders registers was already in the pipeline.

Also speaking at the meeting, the Chairperson of MCPDN Chalo Mvula welcomed the Minister’s move to engage with the diaspora.  “Most of the diaspora think they have been forgotten, but it’s reassuring to have a member of the cabinet engaging us, to hear not just our concerns but also ideas which we think can be helpful to the new government “. Mvula went on to say the MCP diaspora members are ready to work with the government of Dr Lazarus Chakwera in order to make sure that the promises that he made in the manifesto are fulfilled for the betterment of Malawi

Chimwendo finished off by encouraging the diaspora to be more proactive and to engage the government more especially on policy level. He said there was need for proper communication channels to be established so that the voice of the diaspora can be heard. He also noted that government is geared to benefit more from the diaspora if these channels are there and it would enable government to know the skill levels, talents and how best to work with the diaspora.

By Sangwani Mabaso

Government through the Ministry of Civic Education and National Unity has said it is geared to build a corrupt-free country by putting Malawians in the fore front of the developmental activities.

According to the Minister responsible, Timothy Mtambo, the ministry is geared with new policies and procedures which have been aligned to fight corruption via civic educating the masses.

“The ministry has tabled procedures which will help citizens to play a big role of combating corruption in the country and that the citizens should own developmental agendas in order to build a new Malawi. We want Malawians to be vigilant on ensuring that there is accountability in various Government sectors,” he said during the launch of Malawi Citizen Chat Network on Sunday.

Mtambo further said the Ministry, through its new policies of Civic Education, is committed to eradicate corruption by putting in place policies that spearhead accountability to Malawians in the running of the country. Mtambo his ministry will soon be launching the government-citizens engagement forum call Pabwalo. The ultimate objective of the platform will be to promote transparency, accountability, dialogue and active citizenship.

“Malawians are supposed to own their development agendas so that they are able to competently question if nothing is being carried out on such agendas”, he said.

Mtambo added that the Ministry is exploring on the need to translate laws and critical policies into various local languages so that all Malawians including those that can’t understand English should understand and be able to follow operations in the running of the country.

“Malawians should be able to understand their own laws. We are governing Malawians, some of whom do not understand English hence the need for translation of laws into local languages so that they, too, should understand the affairs as they relate to the law”, he said.

“We are also trying our best, as a Ministry, to engage the Parliament to adopt the use of local languages as it is the master key for people in various constituencies to know if their members are indeed presenting what they were sent to present in the chamber or not,” he added.

The Ministry has since outlined various measures aimed for implementation so that Malawians are totally involved in the development agenda.

Mtambo also emphasized that education is key in transforming the society. His ministry is engaging the ministry of education to look into the curricular and introduce subjects which will promote mind set change of the citizens and promote the spirit of patriotism and nationalism such as Civics and Citizenship studies.
