Nkoloma embraces MEC appointment with sense of duty

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) expert Mayamiko Nkoloma has expressed appreciation for his appointment as a commissioner of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), describing it as a profound national responsibility.

Nkoloma, a lecturer in telecommunications at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) and founder of iMoSyS, told 247 Malawi News in an interview that his appointment is not just a personal achievement but also a pledge to serve the people of the country with integrity, impartiality, and commitment.

“This role comes with significant expectations, particularly from the youth of this country.

“It is an opportunity to prove that we can rise to the challenge and deliver electoral processes that are credible, transparent, and inclusive processes that uphold and strengthen our democracy,” he said.

He added:“I am deeply grateful to His Excellency the President of the Republic of Malawi, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, for approving my nomination. I also sincerely thank former president Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and the Democratic Progressive Party(DPP ) for putting my name forward.”

Secretary to the President and Cabinet Colleen Zamba said in a statement on Friday that Nkoloma’s appointment is effective July 24,2025.

He replaces Francis Kasaila who resigned in April this year to contest in parliamentary elections.

The ICT expert has a Master of Science in Wireless Communication from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom(UK) and a Master of Technology Degree in Advanced Information Technology with specialisation in Telecommunications and Networking from International Institute of Information and Technology in Pune, India.

He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Mubas, formerly known as The Polytechnic.

Nkoloma also boasts of numerous local and international awards, among others, by the ICT Association of Malawi (ICTAM) for being innovative by applying ICT in the field of technology.

He recently also received a national innovation award in science and technology and in 2017, he received an award from the International Telecommunication Union for providing and promoting innovative ICT solutions with social impact.

Prior to his appointment, DPP recommended ICT professional George Somanje, a move that sparked controversy after a leaked letter from National Council for Higher Education(NCHE ) put a dent on his academic credentials.

The letter from the council to the Office of President and Cabinet (OPC) legal adviser Chizaso Nyirongo alleged that Somanje’s purported Bachelor of Science in Computer Science credentials from University of South Africa in June 1994 were bogus.

Civil Society Elections Integrity Forum(CSEIF) chairperson Benedicto Kondowe said in an earlier interview with local media that there were no legal implications for not having the remaining commissioner since Section 75 (1) of the Constitution stipulates not fewer than four commissioners, excluding the chairperson.

But Centre for Multiparty Democracy(CMD) executive director Boniface Chibwana said politically it is important to have equal numbers of MEC commissioners to balance decision−making and machinations.

UN reaffirms commitment to Malawi’s development vision

The United Nations(UN) Resident Coordinator in Rebecca Adda-Dontoh,has reiterated the UN’s steadfast support for Malawi’s development ambitions as outlined in the Malawi 2063 vision.

The Malawi 2063 agenda aspires to transform the country into a wealthy, self-reliant, and industrialized upper-middle-income nation by the year 2063.

During a visit to South Lunzu Health Centre and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warehouses in Limbe on Saturday, Adda-Dontoh emphasized the UN’s long-term commitment to the country.

“The UN is here to stay, and we are committed to supporting Malawi in achieving its development goals by 2063,” she told journalists.

She explained that her visit to South Lunzu Health Centre was meant to gain a deeper understanding of the WFP’s ongoing initiatives, particularly those contributing to the Human Capital Development pillar of the Malawi 2063 vision.

“You cannot achieve human capital development if people are unwell. That is  why the WFP is tackling malnutrition in Malawi,” she said.

Earlier in the week, both local and international journalists toured several WFP-supported initiatives, including the WFP warehouse and South Lunzu Clinic in Blantyre, Mwanga Health Centre in Phalombe, farming communities in Nsanje, food-insecure families and maize distribution beneficiaries in Chikwawa, and school meals programs at Kaunda LEA Primary School in Kasungu North East.

Misa Malawi condemns DPP for blocking live broadcasting at BICC

Misa Malawi has condemned Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for disrupting live broadcasting at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) where Peter Mutharika was presenting nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

In a statement which its chairperson Golden Matonga has signed Misa has further condemned Sameer Suleman for being seen with naked eyes impounding tripod from cameramen.

“On Friday, July 25, 2025, some DPP followers who accompanied Professor Mutharika to the ceremony caused a commotion and disrupted the live media coverage of the event by blocking
the cameras and grabbing the broadcasting equipment, among other actions. One of the party followers, Sameer Suleman, aggressively seized the tripod and lighting  equipment belonging to the Nation Publications Limited (NPL), claiming the equipment was
‘disturbing’ the party leader,” reads the statement.

According to the chaiirperson , the disruption forced journalists on duty to abruptly stop the live coverage of the event and focus on their safety and protecting the broadcasting equipment from possible damage.

“MISA Malawi believes the behaviour is a violation of media freedom and the right of the people, especially the electorate, to access accurate and credible information on the goings-on in the runup to the September 16 general elections,”


Misa Malawi has since  asked  the leadership of the DPP, all political parties, and independent candidates
contesting in the election to hold their supporters accountable for any barbaric behaviours, such as the unnecessary commotion at BICC.

Matonga says , apart from violating fundamental freedoms of journalists
and the general public, such behaviours tarnish the image of the parties involved.

MISA Malawi has since urged all political party leaders and supporters to ensure that journalists are free to cover all electoral activities in safe and secure spaces during and beyond the current electoral cycle.

Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma Pledges Continued Development for Nkhata Bay South

Member of Parliament for Nkhata Bay South, Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma, has vowed to keep pushing for meaningful development in his constituency. Speaking on Saturday during the official submission of his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) at Kachere Teacher Development Centre, Ng’oma, who also serves as Minister of Mining, emphasized his commitment to economic and social progress.

He described the nomination filing as a crucial step in his re-election bid, stressing that his focus remains on improving the lives of his constituents. “This is not just about me—it’s about the people of Nkhata Bay South. I pledge to continue working hard to drive development and promote the welfare of everyone in this constituency,” said Ng’oma. 

He highlighted several ongoing development projects under his leadership and called on voters to support his vision for further progress. Meanwhile, Tukombo Ward Councillor Mauka Chirwa and Mbamba Ward Councillor Job Chirwa also submitted their nomination papers.

NBM plc, FAM adopts Jetu’s ‘Pangolin’ song for Women’s football league

National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc and the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) have adopted the hit song ‘Pangolin’ by urban artist Jetu as the official theme song for the inaugural NBM Women’s football Premiership.

The announcement was made on Friday at a joint unveiling at NBM Head Office in Blantyre, where NBM plc and FAM also revealed the official league jerseys, starting with FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women and Kukoma Mtopwa Women kits.

The two teams will face each other Saturday (today) at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe to market the official launch of the much-anticipated NBM Women’s Premiership.

Speaking during the event, NBM plc Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager, Akossa Hiwa, said the Bank saw value in fusing music and football to create an unforgettable experience for fans.

She said ‘Pangolin’ was specially chosen and remastered to embody the spirit and strength of Malawian women.

“As National Bank of Malawi plc, we are proud to unveil Jetu’s ‘Pangolin’ as the official theme song for the NBM Women’s Premiership and all our women-focused initiatives. We see great symbolism in the pangolin—an animal that is feared, respected, and protected.”

“These are the same values we attach to the women participating in this premiership, the Scorchers who represent our nation, and the young girls who look up to them. Women are like pangolins: resilient, unique, and powerful. That is why we brought in Jetu—to help create a powerful vibe around the women’s game and make match days more exciting,” said Hiwa.

On the unveiling of the new team kits, Hiwa added: “The jerseys are symbols of respect and value, that is why the jerseys hence a catch phrase of ‘Ona pango’. As NBM plc, we want every woman who wears these kits to feel empowered, seen, and celebrated.”

FAM Competitions Director Gomezgani Zakazaka expressed excitement over the historic kick-off of the country’s first-ever national women’s football league, which he said will set a new benchmark for women’s sports in Malawi.

“We are thrilled to see the NBM Women’s Premiership finally coming to life. This is a big step forward for women’s football in the country, and we expect high levels of competition and entertainment from the participating teams,” said Zakazaka.

The NBM Women’s football Premiership will run from July 2025 to February 2026, featuring top women’s teams from across the country competing for glory in what is poised to be a game-changing platform for female footballers in Malawi.
