By Jones Gadama

Action for Sustainable Development (ASUD) and Mzimba North District Education Office have organized an education tour for 25 learners from five primary schools in the district.

The tour, which is part of an initiative to impart modern farming technologies among learners, aims to share experiences and motivate students to get involved in farming.

The learners, drawn from St. Michael’s, Ng’ongo, Katula, Embombeni, and St. Monica primary schools, are visiting different schools to learn from their counterparts and gain hands-on experience in modern farming practices.

Speaking at Ng’ongo Primary School during the tour, ASUD Project Officer, Zelina Tchuba, said the initiative is designed to achieve agriculture-related Malawi 2063 development targets.

“The education tour is aimed at sharing experiences and imparting modern farming technologies among learners in primary schools within our catchment area,” Tchuba said, adding that, “We believe that this initiative will motivate learners to get involved in farming and contribute to the country’s development goals.”

Mzimba North District Education School Health Nutrition Coordinator, Rachel Mziya, applauded ASUD for the initiative, saying it will help the beneficiaries learn from their counterparts and gain valuable skills in farming.

“This is a wonderful initiative that will benefit our learners in many ways,” Mziya said, adding that,”We are grateful to ASUD for their support and look forward to seeing the impact of this project on our learners.”

The education tour is part of a broader effort to promote agriculture and nutrition education in primary schools.

By exposing learners to modern farming practices and technologies, the initiative aims to inspire a new generation of farmers and agriculturalists who can contribute to Malawi’s development.

The learners are enthusiastic about the tour and are eager to learn from their peers.

“I am excited to learn about new farming practices and technologies,” said one learner, adding that, “I believe that this will help me improve my farming skills and contribute to my family’s income.”

The initiative is also expected to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing among learners and teachers from different schools.

By working together, the learners and teachers can develop innovative solutions to agricultural challenges and improve food security in their communities.

The education tour organized by ASUD and Mzimba North District Education Office is a valuable initiative that will empower learners with modern farming technologies and inspire them to contribute to Malawi’s development.

The project’s focus on practical skills development and knowledge sharing will help learners gain valuable experience and make a positive impact in their communities.

Greenbelt authority urges landowners to register land in Karonga

By Jones Gadama

The Greenbelt Authority (GBA) has called on landowners in Group Village Heads Katolora and Mwangolera under Paramount Chief Kyungu in Karonga to register their land within the Nthola Illola Irrigation Scheme.

The move aims to mitigate potential land-related conflicts and ensure that each farmer or community member has a certificate for their parcel of land.

GBA’s Land Administration Manager, Oscar Matope, emphasized the importance of registering land parcels during a training for Data Collectors and Data Processors for Customary Land Registration at the Nthola Illola Irrigation Scheme.

“The scheme is being developed on land that belongs to the community,” Matope said, adding that,”We are supposed to make sure that their land parcels are well registered, demarcated, and surveyed to ensure that each farmer or community member has a certificate for his or her parcel of land.”

The Nthola Illola Irrigation Scheme is a significant development project that will benefit local farmers and communities.

However, the project requires careful land administration to avoid conflicts and ensure that landowners’ rights are protected.

By registering land parcels, landowners will have formal proof of ownership, which will help to prevent disputes and ensure that they benefit from the scheme.

Group Village Head Mwangolera welcomed the exercise, saying he will make sure that people in his area are aware that their land is not being grabbed but rather they are securing its ownership.

“We are happy that the Greenbelt Authority is taking steps to formalize land ownership in our area,” he said. “We will work closely with the authorities to ensure that the process is smooth and transparent,” he added.

The training for Data Collectors and Data Processors is a crucial step in the land registration process.

The trainees will be responsible for collecting and processing data on land parcels, which will be used to issue certificates of ownership.

GBA’s efforts to register land parcels in the Nthola Illola Irrigation Scheme are part of a broader initiative to promote land security and reduce conflicts in rural areas.

Land registration is essential for securing land rights and promoting investment in agriculture.

By formalizing land ownership, landowners can use their land as collateral to access credit and other financial services.

This can help to improve agricultural productivity and reduce poverty in rural areas.

The Greenbelt Authority’s call for landowners to register their land in Karonga is a welcome move that will help to promote land security and reduce conflicts. By working together with local communities and authorities, GBA can ensure that the land registration process is smooth and transparent.

The Nthola Illola Irrigation Scheme has the potential to transform the lives of local farmers and communities, and land registration is a critical step in realizing this potential.

A legal hearing involving businessperson Shiraz Ferreira of SF International who is seeking $7.1 million in compensation from the Malawi government was abruptly halted on Thursday at the Commercial Division of the High Court in Lilongwe after his lawyer,Shabir Khan, suddenly fell ill with a severe cough during the proceedings, necessitating immediate medical attention.

High Court Judge Chifundo Kachale, presiding over the case, ordered the hearing to resume on Friday.

Ferreira claims to have supplied military hardware to the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) between 2012 and 2017.

He alleges he supplied the equipment for a total of $30 million in two installments, but that the outstanding amount is due to delayed payments and legal collection fees.

On November 4, 2021, Ferreira initiated legal action against the Attorney General(AG)’s office, claiming $6,942,359.49 in compound interest for delayed payments, plus $208,270.78 in legal collection costs, and additional costs associated with the lawsuit.

The AG’s office, in 2013, countered that Ferreira had received an advance payment of approximately $10.8 million for the contract and that, after three years, the actual value of the supplied equipment totalled only $8 million.
