Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa has expressed concern over the erosion of traditional values in the country.

Kyungu expressed his concern during the second Karonga-Chitipa Cultural Festival, which was held at Mbande Hills in Karonga on Saturday.

He said he believes that many Malawians have misunderstood the concept of democracy, leading to a decline in respect for elders and a sense of community.

According to Kyungu, the misunderstanding of democracy has led to a rise in suicide cases and vandalism of development equipment.

He emphasized the need for Malawians to revisit their lost values and show respect to elderly people.

“By doing so, the country can get back on track in terms of development,” he said.

On her part, speaker of the National Assembly, Catherine Gotani Hara, who represented President Lazarus Chakwera at the festival, commended the people of Karonga and Chitipa for their efforts in promoting culture.

She noted that the current generation views culture as primitive and that many people in urban areas do not even know their vernacular languages.

Hara also pointed out that people have forgotten their roots, and that in the past, orphans were adopted into homes with love.

“However, nowadays, people only look out for their immediate family members, which is a sign of moral decay,” said Hara.

In his remarks, chairperson for Karonga Chitipa Heritage, Malumbo Mwasinga, requested government support for cultural festivals, highlighting their role in fostering national unity.

This was the second joint cultural festival held by the people of Chitipa and Karonga, following the inaugural edition in 2022 at the same site.

The festival was cancelled last year due to drought and floods, which affected many in Karonga and surrounding areas.

The lean season response of maize distribution has begun earlier than expected in Salima district, a move that has been widely commended.

The swift response is expected to bring relief to many households struggling with hunger.

During an inspection of maize distribution in the areas of Senior Chiefs Makanjira and Khombedza on Sunday, Member of Parliament(MP) for Salima North West, Enock Phale, praised the government for its prompt action, describing it as timely.

Just a day after Phale requested that maize distribution be expedited due to worsening hunger, 5,403 households began receiving maize.

Phale emphasized the importance of this relief, stating that it will enable citizens to be productive.

He also urged beneficiaries not to sell the relief maize and avoid food wastage to ensure they receive another bag of maize in the next phase.

Disaster Risk Management Officer for Salima, Gloria Chinangwa, noted that maize distribution was initially scheduled to start in December but has begun earlier.

“For the next three months, families will receive a bag of maize monthly under the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee response. So far, the exercise is going well, with no challenges encountered, and eligible households receiving the maize,” she said.

Rose Phiri, a beneficiary from Odala village in the area of Senior Chief Khombedza, expressed gratitude for the support.

“We did not harvest well due to El Nino, and food is scarce at home. This bag of maize will alleviate hunger in my household for the next four months until the next farming season,” she said.

At least 400 teachers in three education zones in Thyolo have refused to implement the new mathematics syllabus in protest of delayed training allowances.

According to sources, the teachers underwent a three-day training on the National Numeracy Program (NNP) in early September 2024 but have yet to receive their lunch allowances of K55,500 each.

The teachers, from Mount View, Mulenga, and Ntambanyama zones, claim that they have abandoned the new teaching materials at the Primary Education Advisor (PEA) offices and are yet to start using the syllabus.

They allege that efforts to inquire about the delay have been met with threats or no meaningful responses from district education authorities.

When approached for comment, Thyolo District Council spokesperson Yamikani Yapuwa requested more time to investigate the matter before responding.

This protest highlights the frustration and dissatisfaction among teachers regarding the lack of support and resources from the authorities.

The delay in paying training allowances has not only affected the teachers’ morale but also hindered the implementation of the new syllabus, potentially impacting the quality of education for students in the affected zones.
