Pope Francis recovering well after surgery, expected to leave hospital soon

Pope Francis is recovering well after undergoing surgery at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, and is expected to leave the hospital soon.

The 86-year-old Pope underwent a three-hour surgery  to repair an incisional hernia, which was causing him recurrent pain.

According to Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni, the Pope is “awake, alert, and already made his first joke” just 10 minutes after the surgery.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Sergio Alfieri, who also operated on the Pope in July 2021 to remove part of his colon due to diverticulitis

The Pope’s recovery has been remarkable, with Bruni stating that he is expected to leave the hospital on Monday .

During his stay in the hospital, the Pope has been working from his hospital bed, and has even received several guests, including the hospital’s chaplain and the director general of the hospital.

The Pope’s health has been a concern in recent years, with several hospitalizations due to various ailments, including a lung infection and knee pain.

However, despite these health issues, the Pope remains committed to his duties, and has continued to work tirelessly for the Catholic Church.

The Pope’s surgery and recovery have sparked an outpouring of support from around the world, with many Catholics and non-Catholics alike offering prayers and well-wishes for his speedy recovery.

In related news, the Vatican has canceled all of the Pope’s public and private audiences until June 18, to allow him time to recover from his surgery.

The Pope’s next scheduled public appearance is expected to be on June 18, when he will resume his weekly general audiences.

Mwamlima hails Chakwera for progress on Mzuzu Youth Center Project

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Member of Parliament for Mzuzu Central Constituency, Bennex Mwamlima, has commended President Lazarus Chakwera for the progress made on the Mzuzu Youth Center project.

Mwamlima highlighted that during the president’s recent visit to the Northern Region, he inspected the project and confirmed that significant progress had been made.

The legislator expressed satisfaction with the president’s approach to handling development projects across the country.

“I raised concerns about the project, and the president took the initiative to inspect it. Indeed, he found that work is progressing well,” said Mwamlima.

He emphasized the importance of completing the youth center, stating that it would provide young people with a platform to exchange ideas and acquire skills at both local and international levels.

Mwamlima also noted that he frequently visits the site and has observed steady progress.

He made these remarks in Parliament while questioning the Minister of Youth and Sports about the project’s completion timeline.

In response, Minister Uchizi Mkandawire assured the House that the project is currently 70% complete and will be finalized soon.

Mumba seeks royal blessings for Chakwera’s re-election bid

In a historic move, Minister of Trade and Industry, Vitumbiko Mumba, sought the blessings of Paramount Chief of the Tumbuka Kingdom, Themba la Mathemba Chikulamayembe, for his upcoming rallies and Whistlestop Tours in support of President Lazarus Chakwera.

This meeting, which took place at Rumphi District Council, marked a significant moment in Malawian politics, as it was revealed that Mumba is the first politician from the northern region to seek the Chief’s blessings since Chakufwa Chihana.



Mumba, who was appointed as the Minister of Trade and Industry in February 2025, replacing Sosten Gwengwe, has been a key figure in Chakwera’s administration.

Times Group Journalist ‘Mphatso Malidadi’ elected for a second term as SWAM President- Wesysylas Chirwa, Lucy Kadzongwe also retain their positions

Sports Writers Association of Malawi (Swam) members on Saturday re-elected Times Group Journalist Mphatso Malidadi to serve a second four- year term as President of the Association.

Malidadi who was the sole candidate was elected during Swam’s Elective General Meeting (EGM) held at Safari Beach in Salima.

Speaking after being re-elected, Malidadi who was first voted into power in November, 2018, thanked the delegates for trusting him to lead the association.

” I would like to thank the delegates for trusting us and  me in particular that I should continue leading the association. It was not an easy decision on my part but members convinced me that they considered the success stories that the committee achieved despite the challenges encountered,” he said.

He further assured the members that all issues that were raised during the EGM will soon be addressed.

He said “We are going to look into issues which they have raised. Issues to do with the constitutional review; we know the constitution is outdated so we will make sure that within the first four months we do it so that we should have it in our operations. “
“There were a number of issues that were mentioned concerning trainings and I would like to assure the members that these trainings will be conducted so that they continue servicing the  sports fraternity.”

Malidadi was not the only candidate who went unopposed; Mibawa Television Journalist Lucy Kadzongwe and Malawi Broadcasting Corporation Presenter Wesysylas Chirwa were re-elected as Vice President and General Secretary respectively.

The position of National Coordinator went to Benjamin Maona of Gazette Media while Philip Pasula of Nyasa Times beat Pledge Jari of Nation Publications Limited to win the position of Vice General Secretary.

Synoden Kadzakumanja is now SWAMS’s  Treasure General replacing David Daniel Dauda who has been holding the position for the past four years.

Kadzakumanja won the position after beating  former SWAM Coordinator, Japhet Thole.

SWAM members also elected executive members who are Sandfor Sambwita, Bright Linda, Rabson Woodwell, Idah Mwambazi and Andrew Cane Chilapondwa.

The Elective General Meeting also had other activities like speeches and presentations by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS)  who was also the guest of honor, Dr Henry Kamata, Super League of Malawi (Sulom) Vice  President Ronald Chiwaula, Football Legends Association Board Chairperson Jim Kalua and Malawi Boxing Association (MABA) Vice President Francis Kadzakalowa.

Atupele expresses gratitude for support at Sese Ground Rally

The incredible turnout and overwhelming support at Sese Ground in Area 24 left us speechless and deeply grateful.

The event, which attracted a large crowd, was a testament to the growing enthusiasm and determination among Malawians who are eager for change.

Atupele Muluzi, the president of the United Democratic Front (UDF), expressed his heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended, acknowledging their commitment to the cause.

He highlighted the importance of the rally as not just a political event, but a symbol of the collective effort to address the challenges facing Malawi.

Muluzi emphasized that this was a fight not for a few individuals, but for the future of all Malawians.
