Suspected DPP thugs burn Mutharika Critic Allan Ntata’s Car

By Durell Namasani

In a shocking act of violence, suspected DPP thugs set fire to the expensive Jeep of Z. Allan Ntata, a former presidential aide to Bingu wa Mutharika, this afternoon at Ginnery Corner in Blantyre. The vehicle was completely burnt to ashes, though fortunately, Ntata was not inside at the time. His driver, who was at the wheel, escaped unscathed.

Ntata, a vocal critic of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has been at the forefront of a campaign to prevent DPP President Peter Mutharika from running for president in the upcoming September election. His primary argument revolves around Mutharika’s advanced age—he is 86 years old—and the risk of the country being ruled by political opportunists should Mutharika win the presidency.

As the incident unfolds, fingers are being pointed at the DPP’s hierarchy with many suspecting the involvement of the party’s operatives. The thugs reportedly believed Ntata was in the vehicle when they set it ablaze. This act of violence follows a long history of intimidation and brutality associated with the DPP, including the infamous killing of Issah Njauju and the burning of his vehicle during the party’s earlier reign of terror.

Ntata’s supporters have condemned the attack, calling it an attempt to silence dissent. The act has reignited fears about the return of a violent DPP regime under Mutharika’s leadership. “Never again clueless Peter Mutharika, never again the murderous and violent DPP,” said a group of concerned citizens.

As tensions rise, many Malawians are calling for an end to the political violence and a peaceful election season. The attack on Ntata’s car has only intensified the debate surrounding Mutharika’s fitness to lead, with growing calls for change in the upcoming election.

Mijiga underscored the importance of safeguarding minors from the harmful effects of gambling, saying individuals found in violation of this rule would face significant consequences.

“We must protect our youth from the serious social and psychological risks that gambling poses. That is why the new regulations are clear, anyone found entertaining children under the age of 18 to participate in gambling activities will face a fine of K20 million,” said Mijiga.

Commenting on the development, Betway Chief Operations Officer, Charles Phiri, expressed support for the new regulations, highlighting the importance of protecting young people from the dangers of gambling.

“We fully welcome these developments. Betway is committed to complying with the new regulations, and we will ensure our staff is thoroughly trained on the new rules,” said Phiri.

As part of the revised regulations, operators are also encouraged to launch awareness campaigns that educate the public, particularly the youth, about the risks of gambling.

Some of the newly introduced regulations are Sports betting regulations, National lottery regulations, player protection regulations, internet gaming regulations, advertisement regulations and the electronic monitoring system

Furthermore, MAGLA has established an electronic monitoring system, mandating the integration of all operators to promote compliance and augment transparency throughout the sector.

Minister of Transport Combats Vandalism

The Ministry of Transport has taken a bold step to combat vandalism of street lights along the newly-constructed dual carriage from Kamuzu Central Hospital turnoff to Crossroads Hotel roundabout. Deputy Minister Baba Steven Malondera has directed the Roads Authority (RA) to install GPS-compatible trackers on the street lights to deter vandals and thieves.

This move comes after a recent inspection of the road construction project, where Malondera witnessed firsthand the extent of the vandalism. He condemned the perpetrators, labeling them “enemies of development.” The Deputy Minister also emphasized the need to install GPS trackers at the Area 18 interchange, where theft of street lights is similarly rampant.

Hon Steve Malondela

According to Patrick Kamanga, Senior Projects Engineer at the RA, at least 10 street light poles have been vandalized, a development he describes as “unfortunate” in the context of road infrastructure development. The installation of GPS trackers is expected to enhance security and monitoring of the street lights, thereby reducing the incidence of vandalism and theft.

This initiative aligns with the government’s efforts to upgrade and expand the country’s road network. Recently, President Lazarus Chakwera launched the upgrading works for Kenyatta Drive, a project aimed at improving road safety and reducing travel time. The Ministry of Transport’s directive to install GPS trackers on street lights demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing the challenges facing the country’s road infrastructure.
