In a bid to ensure peaceful elections in Mangochi, the Centre for Social Concern (CfSC) has brought together political party representatives, religious leaders, traditional leaders, and other key stakeholders to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) promoting peaceful coexistence.
The move comes ahead of the September 16 General Election.

CfSC deputy director Father Matthews Banseh emphasized that politics should not undermine the peace and unity currently prevailing in the district.

He urged leaders to strengthen social cohesion and reject politicians who promote violence.

“Any political leader or party that promotes violence should not be followed or voted for,” he said.

Political party representatives from the Malawi Congress Party and Democratic Progressive Party reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace throughout the campaign period.

They agreed that it is possible to conduct peaceful and orderly elections in the district.

Mangochi district commissioner Davie Chigwenembe hailed CfSC for facilitating the MoU, saying it will help promote peaceful coexistence in the district.

The signing ceremony was preceded by a solidarity walk, demonstrating the leaders’ commitment to peace.

Limbe Health Centre crippled by equipment shortages, gets lifeline from Standard Bank

Limbe Health Centre in Blantyre is facing a serious shortage of basic medical equipment, putting immense strain on its ability to deliver quality healthcare to thousands of patients.

The facility attends to an average of 600 patients per day, which adds up to nearly 10,000 patients every month.

Despite this overwhelming demand, the centre operates with only one working wheelchair, two blood pressure machines, and no weighing scale—a stark reflection of the systemic resource gaps facing primary health facilities in Malawi.

Shockingly, the facility also lacks stretchers, essential for transporting critically ill or immobile patients, further burdening both patients and medical personnel.

In response to this dire situation, Standard Bank plc has stepped in to offer critical support through a donation of medical equipment valued at K7 million.

The donation includes wheelchairs, stretchers, mattresses, blood pressure machines, and other essential medical supplies aimed at improving the quality of care and easing the daily challenges health workers face at the facility.

According to Ewen Hiwa, Standard Bank’s Head of Client Coverage, the initiative reflects the bank’s broader commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainable development.

“We believe that Malawi’s growth depends on the wellbeing of its people,” said Hiwa.

He further explained that by supporting access to healthcare and improving infrastructure, Standard Bank is helping drive the goals of Malawi’s Vision 2063 and making strides toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Receiving the donation, Blantyre District Medical Officer Dr. Hawa Mtitimila expressed gratitude and underscored the ongoing needs of the health centre.

Dr. Mtitimila appealed for additional support, noting that the facility’s high patient volumes require sustained investment if it is to meet the community’s health demands effectively.

The intervention by Standard Bank serves as both a lifeline and a wake-up call, highlighting the urgent need for greater public and private sector collaboration to address health infrastructure gaps across Malawi.

As more corporate institutions take up their role in social investment, the hope is that no patient in Malawi should suffer or die simply because of lack of basic equipment.

Amid growing concerns over camp security following the withdrawal of key relief agencies such as UNHCR, Dowa Police and Inua Advocacy held a strategic meeting aimed at addressing safety challenges affecting refugees at Dzaleka Camp.

The engagement took place on Friday, July 11, at Ubuntu Hall and featured a panel-style discussion that welcomed input from refugee leaders and community members.

Inua Advocacy, an independent civil society organization dedicated to defending refugee rights in Malawi and beyond, plays a pivotal role in empowering refugee leadership, offering emergency support, delivering legal advice, and promoting service provider accountability.

During the meeting, participants expressed several pressing concerns, such as unregulated operation of bars beyond permitted hours, nighttime loitering under the guise of individual rights, criminals exploiting children to avoid prosecution, unconditional release of suspects, which undermines community trust among others.

In response, Dowa Police Station Officer Mrs. Annie Kaunda, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), assured the community of intensified patrols within the camp in coordination with the Dzaleka Community Policing Forum (Sungu-Sungu).

She also urged community leaders to take an active role in maintaining security by sharing credible information with police, underlining that collaborative transparency is vital for effective law enforcement.

Burundian community leader Ndulomana Nasolo commended both Dowa Police and Inua Advocacy for facilitating the initiative and pledged to disseminate the security message among fellow refugees.

Project Manager for Inua Advocacy, Apatsa Mhango, reiterated the organization’s commitment to supporting refugee safety and strengthening its partnership with law enforcement agencies.

Recently, Inua donated reflective jackets to Sungu-Sungu and surrounding community policing structures, a gesture made through Dowa Police to enhance security patrols.

As Malawi approaches its electoral period, the gathering was reminded to uphold peace and refrain from political violence to preserve harmony within the camp.

The Minister of Tourism, Dr. Vera Kamtukule, has emphasized the need to celebrate the lives of Mulanje mountain porters by launching the Porters Welfare Fund.

Speaking at the Mount Mulanje Porters Race, she noted that despite UNESCO’s recognition of Mount Mulanje as a World Heritage Site, the porters’ lives haven’t improved.

Dr. Kantukule stressed that the fund will support the porters’ children, enabling them to access university education.

This initiative aims to make a positive impact on the lives of these porters who play a vital role in Malawi’s tourism industry.

The Mount Mulanje Porters Race is an annual event that showcases the endurance and skills of porters who work on the mountain. This year’s event saw impressive performances from participants.

Anthony Matias set a new record in the race, finishing in 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 36 seconds.

Doris Fitcher emerged as the top female athlete, completing the course in 2 hours and 41 minutes.
