By Twink Jones Gadama

Zeria Chakale, who defected from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to join the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has lost the primary elections held in Lilongwe-Lumbadzi.

Chakale, who was once a prominent figure in the DPP, garnered a mere 5 votes, while her competitor, Alexander Kusamba Dzonzi, secured an overwhelming 612 votes.

The primary elections, which were conducted through a secret ballot, have been commended for their transparency and fairness.

Unlike the traditional method of queuing behind one’s preferred candidate, the secret ballot allowed voters to cast their ballots freely, without fear of intimidation or retribution.

This approach has been hailed as a refreshing change from the usual practices and has set a new standard for future elections.

Chakale’s defeat is a significant blow to her political ambitions, particularly given her high-profile defection from the DPP.

As a former vice president of the DPP in the Central Region, Chakale was seen as a key figure in the party’s structures.

Her decision to join the MCP was widely reported, and many had expected her to make a significant impact in her new party.

However, Chakale’s loss in the primary elections suggests that she may not have enjoyed the same level of support within the MCP as she had within the DPP.

Despite her efforts to rebrand herself as an MCP member, Chakale’s past associations with the DPP may have worked against her in the eyes of MCP supporters.

As the MCP looks to the future, the party’s leadership will need to carefully consider the implications of Chakale’s defeat.

While the party has commended the secret ballot process, it remains to be seen whether this approach will be adopted more widely in future elections.

In the meantime, Alexander Kusamba Dzonzi will go on to represent the MCP in the forthcoming elections.

As he prepares to take on the challenges ahead, Dzonzi will need to build on the momentum generated by his landslide victory in the primary elections.

The people of Lilongwe-Lumbadzi have spoken, and their voices have been heard loud and clear.

As Malawi continues on its journey towards greater democracy and transparency, the MCP’s adoption of the secret ballot process is a significant step in the right direction.

The Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Jessie Kabwila, has called on graduates from Nalikule College of Education to apply the knowledge they have acquired and contribute meaningfully to Malawi’s labour industry.

Speaking at the institution’s Fourth Graduation Ceremony on Wednesday, Dr. Kabwila emphasized the crucial role that the graduates will play in realizing the country’s long-term development plan, Malawi 2063.

A total of 170 students were conferred with diplomas and degrees in various disciplines, marking a significant milestone in their academic journey.

Addressing the graduates, Dr. Kabwila encouraged them to embrace their responsibilities with determination and purpose.

“Go and shine in the labour industry.

You are the real implementers of the Malawi 2063 vision, because the knowledge that you have accumulated will support the government in ensuring that we achieve the Malawi 2063 goals,” she said.

She reiterated that education remains a key pillar in national development and is central to achieving the country’s aspirations.

By equipping themselves with the necessary skills and expertise, she noted, the graduates have a responsibility to transform the education sector and other industries that rely on skilled professionals.

The ceremony was also addressed by the Principal of Nalikule College of Education, Elizabeth Selemani Meke, who reminded the graduates that their journey does not end with graduation but rather marks the beginning of their professional careers.

“Embrace the challenges ahead with confidence and integrity, and always strive to be lifelong learners.

Your future is bright, and we believe in your potential to inspire and lead in education,” Meke advised.

The event was a moment of celebration, recognizing the dedication and hard work of students who have spent years preparing for careers in education and related fields. With their newly earned qualifications, they are expected to contribute significantly to the country’s workforce and play a role in shaping the future of Malawi’s education system.

The Minister was accompanied by several senior government officials, including the Director of Higher Education, Dr. Levis Eneya, and the Director for Teacher Education, Dr. Zizwa Msukuma.

Their presence underscored the government’s commitment to improving higher education and ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities in the job market.

As the graduates embark on their new journeys, the message from the day was clear: their education is a powerful tool, and it is now their turn to use it to drive development and make a positive impact in Malawi.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Fleetwood Haiya led the Malawi National Women’s Football team in a tree-planting exercise along the bypass road in Blantyre.

Haiya emphasized the importance of giving back to nature, highlighting the interconnectedness of football and the environment.

“Football is played by players who live in communities where we need nature, including trees. We thought it wise to give back to nature,”Haiya said.

The tree-planting initiative is not a one-off event; FAM has been actively promoting environmental conservation.

Last year, the association planted trees during the four-nations tournament, encouraged by FIFA’s emphasis on environmental responsibility.

Blantyre City Mayor, Joseph Makwinja, applauded FAM’s gesture, stating that the support will significantly contribute to restoring the city’s environment.

“Trees are life, and I thank Mr. Haiya for taking the lead. We’ve planted 40 trees today, and I urge everyone to take care of them,” Makwinja explained

The Malawi National Women’s Football team, led by captain Temwa Chawinga, also expressed their appreciation for the initiative. Chawinga encouraged her fellow players and teams to adopt the culture of planting more trees.

“Ndale” is not about facts but perception lands on the market

Minister of Education responsible for Higher Education Dr. Jessie Kabwila was recently caught up in a leaked WhatsAPP conversation where he boldly stated that “Ndale”-politics is not about facts but perception.

Dr. Kabwila was reacting to public comments which were being made on MCP forums that President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera delivered a half-truth State of the Nations Address (SONA) advising members not to waste time seeking clarifications on these projects but to focus on the elections coming on the 16th September, 2025.

Presenting the SONA in Parliament, President Chakwera said he has enough trust in the Malawian people that they are fair minded enough to judge his performance as President by what he has done not by what other politicians say about him or by the disasters that have befallen Malawians.

Kabwila

Political analyst Burnett Munthali has described the statement made by Dr. Kabwila that “Ndale” is not about facts but perception as not only dangerous, but threatening the very foundation upon which democracy and good governance rest in Malawi.

Munthali writing in his speech said politics is not about manipulating perception, it is about service, it is about addressing the real issues that affect the people such as poverty, healthcare, education, job creation, and national development.

He said the country’s leaders are not elected to deceive their people but to serve their people with honesty and commitment claiming that when politicians embrace perception over facts, they insult the intelligence of Malawians.

The political analyst said politicians assume that the people can be easily manipulated and start believing in anything they say regardless of whether it is true or false saying governance is not a game of deception- it is a responsibility that demands truthfulness and transparency.

He said ministers and public officials in Malawi takes an Oath not a mere formality, it is a sacred promise to serve the nation with integrity,” I will well and truly perform the functions of the high office and at all times, protect and defend the Constitution. I will faithfully serve the people of Malawi and preserve the sovereignty, integrity and unity of the nation. So help me God,”

“If politics were simply about perception as Dr. Kabwila suggested, there is no need for public officers to take an Oath of office observing that the danger of lies in leadership leads to loss of credibility, political instability, weakened democracy and legal consequence,” reads Munthali’s speech.

He has urged Malawians not to allow deception to define their nation but to demand accountability, transparency and educating themselves to be vigilant in understanding their political systems and not allow propaganda to mislead them.

He said Malawi deserve leadership who govern with honesty, a government that tells the truth reminding Dr. Kabwila and others who share her views that politics is not about perception-it is about reality and the reality is that Malawians are tired of lies, they demand facts, integrity and real change.

A shocking case of human trafficking and child abuse has come to light in Malawi, where Zomba Police have rescued 18 underage girls who were trafficked and impregnated by a self-proclaimed prophet, Harrison Chatepa, popularly known as “Dadi One.”

The rescue operation was carried out by Zomba Police Station’s Community Policing Services Branch in conjunction with the Youth Network and Counselling (YONECO) at Donda Village, Traditional Authority Makwangwala in Ntcheu.

According to the police, the girls, aged between 11 and 16, were trafficked from various districts, including Mwanza, Neno, Thyolo, Balaka, and Blantyre. The police have revealed that 10 of the girls have given birth to babies, with the youngest being 7 months old.

The father of all the babies is alleged to be Prophet Chatepa, who claims to be the leader of the “Voice of One Calling Church.”

The police have arrested Prophet Chatepa, and he is expected to face charges related to human trafficking and child abuse. The rescued girls are currently receiving medical attention and counseling from YONECO.

This disturbing case has raised concerns about the exploitation and abuse of vulnerable children by individuals who claim to be religious leaders.

The police have urged the public to report any suspicious activities or cases of child abuse to the authorities.

“We are committed to protecting the rights and welfare of children in Malawi,” said a police spokesperson for Zomba. “We will do everything in our power to ensure that justice is served and that the victims receive the support and care they need.”

The case has also sparked outrage among child rights activists, who are calling for tougher laws and penalties for those who commit crimes against children.

“This is a wake-up call for all of us to take action and protect our children from exploitation and abuse,” said a YONECO executive member. “We need to work together to create a safe and secure environment for all children in Malawi.”

As the investigation continues, the police have assured that they will do everything in their power to ensure that justice is served and that the victims receive the support and care they need.

The case is a strong warning of the need for vigilance and action to protect vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse.
