Green Livelihoods urges Govt to scale up bamboo production

Green Livelihoods has called on the government to scale up its efforts in promoting bamboo production, citing its potential to boost the country’s economy.

The organization’s project officer Martha Mazika made the appeal on Friday after conducting a training session for artisans in Senior Chief Kwambiri’s area in Salima district.



Mazika emphasized that the government needs to provide more support for bamboo farming and market development, as many local artisans rely on bamboo for their livelihoods.

On his part,one of the artisans who benefited from the training, Jimison Kadzibwa, praised the program, saying it would enhance their skills and transform their livelihoods.

The bamboo value chain project, implemented by Green Livelihoods in partnership with Christian Aid Malawi and funded by Christian Aid UK, aims to benefit 2,000 people over two years.

Six police officers sentenced for murder of Buleya Lule in police custody

High Court judge, Justice Chifundo Kachale on Friday February 28,2025 sentenced six police officers who were convicted for the murder of a suspect in police custody, Buleya Lule.

Handing the judgments in Lilongwe, Justice Kachale said the first convict, Paul Chipole, will serve a 20-year jail term, while the second convict, Ikram Malata, will serve a 18-year sentence for the counts of murder.



He said the other four, Richard Kalawire, Innocent Wanda, Maxwell Mbidzi and Abel Maseya will serve 15 years imprisonment each for the same offense.

On the second count of causing grievous harm, Justice Kachale said since this was the cause of the death of the suspect, the court cannot impose a separate sentence from that offence.

On his part,Lead defence lawyer, Lugano Mwabutwa said they are happy with the judgements, while state prosecutor, Dzikondianthu Malunda, expressed satisfaction with the outcome because in their submission, they had proposed such sentences.

Lule tragically died in police custody on the morning of February 21, 2019, at Lilongwe Police Station, when he was arrested in connection to his alleged involvement in the abduction of a boy with albinism.

Videographer ‘Twice P’ survives car accident at Phalula

Popular videographer ‘Twice P’ has survived a serious car accident on Friday afternoon at a place near Phalula Trading Center in Balaka district.

Twice P alongside his friends were on their way from Lilongwe to Blantyre on a business trip



According to eye witnesses, all the passengers in the vehicle escaped with no injuries.

Twice P is one of the current most  sought after videographers in the country, having worked with popular artists like Driemo, Skeffa Chimoto and Miracle Chinga.

Creck Sporting signs striker Misheck Botomani

Creck Sporting Club has announced the signing of former Mighty Wanderers forward Misheck Botomani on a 2-year deal.

According to a statement made available on the team’s official Facebook page, Botomani who also played for the defunct Wizards FC, has joined the Lilongwe outfit as a free agent.



Earlier in the day, the club also announced the signing of Flames and former Blue Eagles goalkeeper Brighton Munthali.

The Malawi Government on Friday unveiled a formidable financial blue print which contains varous windows aimed at resustaining the economy which has been affected mainly due to geopolitical effects.

Among the interventions, Government has made  a serious decision which will see resuscitation of the formerly vibrant Malawi Development Corporation (MDC).

Delivering budget statement in the August House, Mister of Finance , Simplex Chithyola Banda said the resustation of MDC will help to drive productivity and ensure forex available.

Chithyola Banda reaffirmed government committiment in the resustation of key productive areas outlined by President Lazarus Chakwera in the State of National Address (SONA).

“The budget is not just about stabilisation, it is about resuscitation of other key productive sectors and ensuring that Malawi moves forward with resilience and determination,” he said.

According to the minister as the country continues grappling with economic issues government is working tirelessly to finance in both existing and emerging projects starting at a district level, ensuring developments are remain inclusive and sustainable across.

In order to stabilize economy, the Minister announced establishment of key initiative of a National Forex Crime Unit to tackle with parallel market activities, enforcing forex regulations and cracking down illegal exploitation of minerals and agriculture products.

“The unit shall also be responsible for combating the illegal extraction of our country’s minerals and ensuring strict compliance with forex regulations,” Chithyola Banda explained.

He emphasized in streathening  relationship with Malawi Police Service, alongside intelligence institution ensuring that there is fast track in apprehending suspects of engaging in illegal extraction of mining as well as forex trading.

Another developing issue is that of a ban on the importation of non-essential commodities that can be produced locally as companies and individuals will be encouraged to venture into local production through various taxation measures.

“We no longer allow unnecessary imports to drain our forex reserves, instead we ensure to support local industry through SMEs who will be playing a crucial role in producing goods that have traditionally been imported,” Chithyola Banda emphasised.

He, therefore said the announcements offer a standing point into the government’s efforts to revitalize Malawi’s economy by implementing the measures, the government hopes to pave the way to more prosperous and stable future for all Malawians.
