By Chisomo Phiri

Economics lecturer at the Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA ) Greenson Nyirenda has urged the government to take immediate action to tame food inflation and ensure forex availability in the country.

This comes after former Minister of Trade Sosten Gwengwe admitted that Malawi is indeed experiencing hyperinflation, echoing the International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s forecast of a cumulative inflation rate of 108% by the end of 2024.

Greenson Nyirenda

In an interview with 247 Malawi News,Nyirenda pointed out a compromised food basket, particularly maize production, and forex challenges as the primary drivers of this crisis.

He also emphasized the need for the government to address the thriving black market, which is exacerbating the situation.

“The government must also deal with the thriving black market for the economy to rebound,” stressed Nyirenda.

But Gwengwe assured that the government is working to address the uncontrollable rising prices of goods in the country.

He admitted that the situation demands urgent attention to prevent further economic deterioration.

Currently,on the black market, a dollar is trading at nearly K4,500, while a 50kg bag of maize costs over K100,000.

A 1kg packet of sugar sells for K4,000, and 2 liters of cooking oil costs around K18,000.

Producers of chicken feeds and chicks have doubled their prices, adding to the burden on consumers.

Malawi’s music sensation, JETU, is poised to receive a staggering $50,000 (approximately K87 million) in compensation for the unauthorized use of her song “Chakwaza” in a DStv advert. This significant payout is a testament to JETU’s hard work and dedication to her craft.

According to reports, the matter has been classified as a “Sync License” or “Copyright Infringement” case, which falls under the highest level of Global Brand Advert.

This classification carries a substantial fine, and in this instance, JETU is set to benefit from the infringement.

The Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) will oversee the payment process, ensuring that all terms and conditions are followed to facilitate the payment.

This development is a significant milestone for JETU, and the amount is a reflection of her growing influence in the music industry.

The use of JETU’s song “Chakwaza” in the DStv advert without her permission is a clear violation of her copyright.

The fact that the matter has been taken seriously and that JETU is set to receive compensation is a welcome development for artists and creators in Malawi.

This payout is not only a victory for JETU but also a warning to companies and individuals who think they can use copyrighted material without permission.

It sends a clear message that intellectual property rights will be protected and that those who infringe on these rights will face the consequences.

As JETU prepares to receive this significant payout, fans and supporters are celebrating her success.

This development is a testament to her hard work and dedication to her craft, and it is a reminder that Malawian artists are making waves in the global music industry.

The payment process is expected to be finalized soon, and JETU is likely to use this opportunity to further her music career and inspire other artists in Malawi.

High court dismisses Age Limit Bill challenge

By Chisomo Phiri

The High Court of Malawi on Thursday thrown out a case challenging a proposed bill that would bar individuals over 80 years from running for the presidency.

The court ruled that the lawsuit was improperly filed, as it should have been brought through judicial review rather than as an ordinary civil case.

Kenyatta

Member of Parliament(MP ) for Thyolo Thava Constituency Mary Thom Navicha had brought the case against the Speaker of the National Assembly, Catherine Gotani Hara, seeking an injunction to stop Parliament from debating and passing the bill.

Navicha argued that the proposed legislation was unconstitutional, violating the right to stand for elective office and protections against discrimination.

She had also alleged that the bill was being fast-tracked to prevent certain politicians from contesting in the September 16, 2025, general elections.

Navicha insisted that the bill contradicted Sections 20 and 40(3) of the Constitution, which protect citizens from discrimination and ensure the right to contest for public office.

However, Justice Kenyatta Nyirenda disagreed, citing previous legal precedents that required constitutional challenges against public bodies to be filed through judicial review.

The judge emphasized that if a person commences an ordinary action where they should have applied for judicial review, the action will be struck out by summary process.

Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara on Thursday afternoon temporarily suspended parliamentary proceedings due to chaos that erupted over the playing of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage that shows individuals who damaged vehicles belonging to two Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislators on Wednesday.

At the centre of the controversy was Thyolo Central Member of Parliament (MP) Ben Phiri, who government MPs accused of tampering with the CCTV footage.

Speaker Gotani Hara

They claimed that Phiri had access to the control room and allegedly manipulated the video.

To substantiate their claims, government MPs demanded that the house view footage of Phiri entering the control room.

However, the played clip contradicted the government’s allegations, showing that Phiri was not the first to enter the control room.

Instead, he followed other opposition MPs assigned to review the footage.

The government MPs, including Malawi Congress Party (MCP ) MP for Lilongwe City West,George Zulu further accused Phiri of masterminding the damage to the vehicles, alleging that he distributed MCP t-shirts to individuals who accessed the parliament premises and vandalized the cars.

Despite the opposition’s push to view the footage showing the actual vandalism, government MPs blocked the demand.

However,Gotani Hara clarified that there was no camera in the CCTV control room to show Phiri’s actions inside.
