Officials from the Malawi Mission in the Republic of South Africa (RSA) have visited the scene where the tragic Limpopo bus accident occurred.

A statement released on Tuesday confirmed that the visit was led by Malawi’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Stella Ndau, alongside South African Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, and Zimbabwean Ambassador to South Africa, David Hamadziripi.

The three officials toured the crash site to assess the situation and monitor the ongoing rescue and recovery operations.

According to reports, 42 people have lost their lives in the accident, including men, women, and children, while 41 others sustained various degrees of injuries.

The statement from the Malawi Mission indicated that officials also visited one of the hospitals where victims are being treated.

“The Mission was able to visit one hospital where one Malawian has been admitted while three have been discharged. We were able to talk to them to narrate their ordeal,” the statement reads in part.

It further explained that confirming the exact number of victims by nationality remains a challenge at this stage.

Identification and forensic analyses are expected to begin on October 15, 2025, to verify the identities of those who lost their lives in the crash.

The Malawi Mission assured the public that it will remain on the ground in Limpopo until all necessary processes have been completed.

The bus, which was en route from South Africa to Zimbabwe, reportedly veered off the road and plunged down an embankment near Louis Trichardt in Limpopo Province.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and worked tirelessly through the night to rescue survivors and recover bodies from the wreckage.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent his heartfelt condolences to the governments and people of Zimbabwe and Malawi.

President Ramaphosa described the incident as a shared tragedy that has brought pain and sorrow to all three nations.

He emphasized the importance of regional solidarity in the face of such disasters, noting that South Africa stands ready to support the affected families and countries during this difficult time.

The Malawi Mission has since pledged continued coordination with South African authorities and other embassies involved to ensure that all victims and their families receive the necessary support.

President Arthur Peter Mutharika has appointed Patricia Wiskes, Member of Parliament, as the new Chief Whip in the National Assembly.

Alongside this appointment, Mutharika has named Martha Ngwira as the Deputy Chief Whip.

The development was officially confirmed by Peter Mukhito, the General Secretary of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), in a statement made to the media

These appointments mark one of the first major leadership decisions by President Mutharika since his return to power, reflecting his renewed efforts to strengthen party organization and parliamentary discipline.

As Chief Whip, Patricia Wiskes will be responsible for maintaining order, ensuring party unity, and coordinating the DPP’s legislative agenda in Parliament.

Her deputy, Martha Ngwira, will assist in enforcing party discipline and managing communication between the party’s parliamentary leadership and its members.

Ngwira, who represents the Mzimba Hora constituency, has previously served in various leadership roles, including as Deputy Minister of Education, bringing valuable administrative and legislative experience to her new position.

Her appointment also signals Mutharika’s recognition of women’s growing influence and contribution to Malawi’s political landscape, as both top whip positions have been entrusted to female legislators.

DPP insiders view the move as a strategic step aimed at reinforcing party cohesion and revitalizing its parliamentary strength.

Political analysts suggest that these appointments are part of Mutharika’s broader strategy to prepare the party for upcoming parliamentary sessions and future elections.

The new whips are expected to play a critical role in aligning MPs with party policies and ensuring effective representation of the DPP’s legislative priorities.

With these appointments, President Mutharika has sent a clear message about his commitment to discipline, inclusivity, and the active participation of women in leadership within the Democratic Progressive Party.

Malawi’s football is gaining a new face abroad through the remarkable rise of 21-year-old Naeem Shariff, a talented attacking midfielder currently lighting up the football scene in Brunei Darussalam, Southeast Asia.

Shariff, who once played for several Zomba-based teams, has become a key figure for PKT FT, a club competing in the competitive Lela Cheteria Football League a tournament that features top clubs from Brunei and Malaysia.

His journey began modestly, balancing academics and football after moving to Southeast Asia for studies. His skills soon caught the attention of university scouts and his consistent performances earned him a spot at PKT FT, where he quickly proved his worth.

“The games were tough, but each match made me stronger. I’ve grown a lot both on and off the field.I’m proud of this season’s success, but I am ready to work even harder,”he said.

This season, his team finished third in the league, an impressive achievement for a player adapting to new styles of play, different cultures, and a fast-paced football environment.

Shariff’s story has inspired many young players back home who dream of making it beyond Malawi’s borders. Local coaches in Zomba describe him as a disciplined and visionary player, capable of reading the game and leading from the midfield.

Football analyst Enock Banda say his success in Brunei is a reminder that Malawi’s football talent, though often overlooked, can shine anywhere when given the right platform.

Born and raised in Chowe Village, Traditional Authority Chowe, Mangochi District, Naeem Shariff represents a growing wave of young Malawians proving that dreams can indeed travel far.

As he continues his football career abroad, Shariff says he hopes to one day wear the Malawi national team jersey, bringing home the experience and exposure gained in Asia.

“I owe it all to where I come from. Mangochi and Zomba will always be part of who I am,”he added.

Shariff’s story is not just about football it’s about resilience, ambition and the promise of a new generation ready to take Malawi’s football to the global stage.

Mutharika orders relocation of key Govt institutions to former bases

President Peter Mutharika has issued an executive order directing the relocation of the headquarters of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC), Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), and Malawi Prison Services (MPS) to their former locations.

According to Executive Order No. 1 of 2025, dated October 10, 2025, the directive takes effect immediately.

Under the order, MACRA, MEC, and MHC are to move their headquarters from Lilongwe back to Blantyre, while MPS will relocate its headquarters from Lilongwe to Zomba.

The document further stipulates that all relocations must be completed within a three-month period.

Mutharika has long contended that the previous administration’s decision to shift these entities to Lilongwe eroded Blantyre’s standing as Malawi’s commercial city.

During his campaign trail,Mutharika repeatedly underscored that such transfers stripped Blantyre of vital economic and administrative clout.
