UTM Party President Dr. Dalitso Kabambe on Thursday presided over a significant event in Lilongwe where he officially presented nomination certificates to parliamentary and local government candidates for the upcoming 16th September 2025 elections.

A total of 46 parliamentary candidates and 69 ward councillor candidates from the Central Region received their certificates of endorsement from the party.

Kabambe and Mtumbuka

The event, held under the party’s theme of renewal and transformation, marked a strategic step in UTM’s ongoing preparations for the national elections.

Dr. Kabambe, who recently took over leadership of the UTM, expressed confidence in the team representing the party, describing them as capable, visionary, and ready to serve the people with integrity.

He emphasized the importance of unity, hard work, and people-centered policies as key pillars of the UTM campaign.

The gathering also featured the newly appointed UTM Vice President, Mathews Mtumbuka, who was introduced to the public for the first time in his new role.

Mtumbuka’s appointment is seen as part of a broader effort to strengthen the party’s leadership and appeal across different sectors of society.

In his brief remarks, Mtumbuka thanked Dr. Kabambe for the trust and pledged to work diligently to deliver victory for the UTM in the upcoming elections.

The mood at the event was one of optimism, with chants of support and calls for change echoing throughout the venue.

As the election campaign enters a critical phase, UTM’s leadership is working to consolidate support in the Central Region—a key battleground for political influence.

Dr. Kabambe reiterated his party’s commitment to issue-based politics and to offering practical solutions to the country’s pressing challenges, including youth unemployment, corruption, and poor service delivery.

The party’s strategy appears focused on presenting fresh leadership and restoring public trust in governance.

Observers say UTM’s early move to formally unveil its candidates and structure its campaign gives it a tactical advantage heading into the September polls.

The event in Lilongwe has sent a strong signal that UTM is ready to contest with full force and is determined to become a formidable player in Malawi’s political future.

By Burnett Munthali

Veteran Malawian musician Joseph Mkasa has released a new song that is capturing the attention of political enthusiasts and music lovers alike.

The track, which praises President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, has been commended for its distinct style and lyrical creativity.

At the heart of the song is a catchy chorus that goes, “Kuyenda ndi Chakwera mkokoma inu, eee tawonani ena akulira kubangula chifukwa ali kunja kwa boma.”

This line, translated loosely, underscores the perceived benefits of aligning with President Chakwera’s leadership while contrasting the challenges faced by those outside government.

The song has rapidly gained traction and is currently trending as one of Malawi’s top political anthems.

Social media platforms have been awash with reactions from users who are impressed by the song’s rhythm and message.

One user, Jeffrey Dzimbi, commented, “This is the best song ever. Mkasa has talent indeed. Political songs should have the vibe like this one.”

The song goes beyond praise, positioning President Chakwera as a unifying and dependable figure for Malawians.

Another powerful line in the song declares, “Zivute zitani ife a Malawi tili pa mbuyo pa Chakwera,” which reaffirms national loyalty and support for the president, even in times of difficulty.

The track is being seen not only as entertainment but as a cultural contribution to the ongoing political narrative in the country.

It arrives at a time when music is becoming a key element of political messaging and campaign strategy ahead of the 2025 elections.

Alongside Mkasa’s song, another track making waves on the campaign trail is “Pangolin” by rising artist Jetu.

“Pangolin” has become an unofficial campaign anthem, frequently played at political rallies and was a feature during the recent presentation of nomination papers by aspiring candidates.

The surge of political songs highlights how music continues to play a vital role in shaping political discourse and connecting leaders with the electorate.

As campaigns intensify, artists like Joseph Mkasa and Jetu are demonstrating the power of music to influence, inspire, and rally public sentiment.

Independent parliamentary candidate for Chitipa North Constituency, Fales Mpoha Moyo, has made a passionate appeal to the electorate to prioritize vision and development when choosing their next Member of Parliament.

Speaking in an exclusive interview , Moyo expressed concern over the area’s long-standing trend of electing leaders who focus more on enriching themselves than addressing the real needs of the people.

She said that for years, the people of Chitipa North have suffered under the leadership of individuals who forget the electorate as soon as they get into office.

Moyo urged the people of Chitipa North to break this cycle of disappointment by voting for a leader who is not only present but also committed to genuine change.

She pledged that, if elected, she will prioritize development projects that directly improve the lives of people in rural areas.

She emphasized that her leadership will focus on essential needs such as access to quality healthcare and good road infrastructure.

Former President of Malawi and current leader of the People’s Party, Joyce Banda, has assured Malawians that once elected into government in the upcoming elections, she will work tirelessly to restore the country’s economy.

Among her key pledges is the revitalisation of the mining sector, which she believes will play a crucial role in improving national revenue and uplifting citizens’ livelihoods.

She condemned the current illegal mining activities in districts like Mangochi and Machinga, where foreign nationals are reportedly smuggling gold.

Banda emphasised that this must come to an end, and that her administration would take full control of mining operations to ensure that Malawians themselves benefit from the country’s natural resources.

To empower rural women and the youth, she disclosed plans to roll out programmes targeting these groups with practical economic support.

One such initiative is the provision of loans to women to help them start and sustain small businesses in their communities.

She also revealed that the youth would benefit from the distribution of motorcycles to help them earn a living through kabaza (motorbike taxi) operations.

Banda explained that her party has already partnered with international companies to establish motorcycle assembly operations in Malawi.

Through this initiative, the motorcycles will be distributed to young people either for free or at highly subsidised prices to ensure accessibility.

She stressed that this move is designed to fight unemployment among the youth by providing them with tools to generate their own income rather than remaining idle.

Her campaign message is clear: her government would focus on economic justice, job creation, and ensuring that Malawians are the primary beneficiaries of the country’s wealth.
