Chatama appointed Ekhaya FC new head coach

Ekhaya FC has announced the appointment of Enos Chatama, former coach of FCB Nyasa Bullets Reserves, as its new head coach.

Chatama has signed a two-year contract, which will see him at the helm of the Cowboys until January 2027.

Moses Chavula, who successfully guided the team to TNM Super League promotion, has been appointed as his assistant coach.

In addition to the new coaching staff, Ekhaya FC has also bolstered its squad with the signings of three players who previously worked under Chatama’s mentorship.

These include Kesten Simbi, a defender from Bullets’ main team, Happy Mphepo, a defender from Bullets Reserves, and Elias Missi, a goalkeeper from Bangwe All Stars.

Ekhaya FC’s appointment of Chatama and the new signings come on the back of the team’s impressive performance in the 2024 ThumbsUp Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) League Premier Division, where they earned promotion to the Super League on their first attempt.

TAML reaffirms commitment to safe working environment

The Tea Association of Malawi Limited (TAML) has reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring a safe working environment for all workers in the industry.

According to TAML Chairperson Sangwani Hara, the sector is committed to upholding the occupational safety and health framework agreed upon by all stakeholders.

He made the remarks during an inspection tour of some tea estates by Minister of Labour Vitumbiko Mumba.

Hara emphasized that risk assessments are conducted within the sector to identify necessary equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for workers.

“We assign workers the type of PPE they need based on these assessments to ensure their safety,” he explained.

The tea sector plays a vital role in Malawi’s economy, providing direct employment opportunities to over 60,000 Malawians, making it the second-largest employer after the government.

The sector is the second-highest foreign exchange earner after tobacco.

The Ministry of Health has moved to calm fears among people living with HIV and AIDS, assuring them that there is an adequate supply of antiretroviral (ARV) medication in the country.

This comes after the American government announced that it would be reviewing its aid to Malawi and other countries, sparking concerns among those relying on ARV treatment.

The Ministry of Health, through a media statement signed by its Secretary Dr. Samson Mdolo, has emphasized that the country has sufficient stocks of ARV medication, test kits, and other essential supplies.

The statement adds that all health facilities have been prepared to ensure uninterrupted services.

Over 900,000 people in Malawi are HIV positive and receive ARV treatment.

UNIMA,MZUNI join forces to drive innovation,academic excellence

The University of Malawi (UNIMA ) and Mzuzu University (MZUNI) on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering joint efforts in research, teaching, and community engagement.

The MoU signing ceremony was held at Ekhaya Luxury Resort in Mangochi .

In his remarks,UNIMA Vice-Chancellor Professor Samson Sajidu highlighted the importance of the partnership, stating that it will facilitate the exchange of innovative ideas and expertise between students and staff.



He said the collaboration is expected to have a profound impact on the academic and research landscape in the country.

On his part,MZUNI Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Wapulumuka Mulwafu described the MoU as a milestone, noting that it marks the first partnership of its kind between public universities in the country.

He emphasized the value of collaboration, stating that by pooling their resources and expertise, the two institutions can achieve great things.

“This partnership is a significant development in the higher education sector in Malawi, and is expected to drive innovation, research, and academic excellence,” said Mulwafu.

Primary school teacher Tionge Mtambo advances to top 10 in global teacher prize

A primary school teacher Tionge Mtambo, has been selected as one of the top 10 finalists for the prestigious Global Teacher Prize 2024.

Mtambo, who serves as the Headteacher at Tondola Primary School, is the only African representative on the elite list, competing against exceptional teachers from around the world.

Reacting to the news, Mtambo expressed her gratitude, stating that the recognition is a milestone not only for her but for all teachers in the country.

“This achievement signifies that Malawian teachers can set an exemplary standard of dedication and passion for education,” she said.

The Global Teacher Prize, which aims to recognize and celebrate outstanding educators, received over 11,000 nominations from teachers making a positive impact in their respective countries.

The winner of the prize will receive a cash award of $1 million (approximately K1.78 billion).
