Police in Lilongwe have arrested 32 people in connection with a brazen robbery at Central Poultry Farm in the area of Traditional Authority M’bwatalika.

The incident occurred on Monday, July 28, when a mob from Nakuwawa Village reportedly stormed the farm, threatened security guards, and made off with a significant number of chickens.

The total value of the stolen livestock is still being assessed, authorities confirm the theft involved hundreds of birds.

According to Lilongwe Police spokesperson, Inspector Hastings Chigalu, the looting extended into the following day, triggering a rapid police response that led to the arrest of 32 suspects

“This is unacceptable behavior. Such acts of lawlessness threaten not only business operations but also community order,” said Chigalu.

Chigalu has also added that more arrests are likely as investigations continue.

Central Poultry Farm, a major supplier of poultry products in the region, has previously not experienced such large-scale thefts.

Police say the suspects will face charges related to robbery and unlawful assembly.

Malawi hosts Zimbabwean military students on educational mission

Malawi has stepped up its efforts to promote peace and regional integration by hosting a 27-member delegation of military students from the Zimbabwe Staff College, who are in the country for a week-long educational tour.

The visit is not only a diplomatic gesture but also a strategic move to foster regional security ties under the banner of SADC cooperation.

The delegation includes officers from various Southern African Development Community (SADC) defence forces, all united under the theme “Peace, an Enabler of Development.”

The tour provides a platform for cross-border dialogue on peacekeeping frameworks, counter-terrorism, and conflict prevention strategies relevant to the region’s evolving security landscape.

Welcoming the delegation during their visit to the Malawi Police Service Headquarters in Lilongwe, Commissioner of Police for Research and Planning, Mr. Dennis Chipao, emphasized the value of collaborative security frameworks.

“Peace and stability in the region depend on how well we share intelligence, build trust, and support each other’s security systems. Malawi remains committed to a united regional front in ensuring peace and sustainable development,” Chipao said.

The educational tour is being facilitated by the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), with Lieutenant Colonel Luhanga acting as the host liaison.

Luhanga underscored the significance of military-to-military exchange programs in building mutual respect and understanding among the region’s armed forces.

“Such engagements promote not only professional growth but also solidarity among forces facing shared security challenges,” he noted.

Captain Shepard Poswo, who is leading the Zimbabwean delegation, commended Malawi for its enduring peaceful environment and the hospitality shown to the visitors.

“We are not only learning from Malawi’s security systems but also drawing inspiration from its people’s commitment to peace. This experience reinforces the belief that peace is possible when it’s collectively pursued,” Poswo remarked.

Beyond the police service, the students are expected to interact with various national security institutions, including the MDF headquarters, immigration services, and intelligence agencies

. They will also visit historical sites and civic institutions to better understand how Malawi’s sociopolitical history has influenced its security policies.

The visit comes at a time when SADC countries are ramping up joint efforts to address regional threats, including violent extremism in northern Mozambique and cross-border trafficking.

As the delegation wraps up their tour later this week, both nations are hopeful the knowledge exchange will translate into stronger bilateral and multilateral security collaborations.

Mutharika sets campaign tone: DPP to launch policies aimed at winning public support ahead of 2025 Elections

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, has announced that his party will soon unveil a set of policy proposals and public engagement programs as it gears up for the highly anticipated general elections scheduled for 16 September 2025.

Speaking through the party’s official Facebook page, Mutharika emphasized that the DPP is preparing to implement strategies that will resonate with Malawians and attract them back to the party’s fold.

Mutharika

He stated that Malawi has experienced significant decline and damage over the past five years, suggesting that the current administration has failed to manage the country effectively.

According to Mutharika, the DPP’s renewed commitment is to rescue Malawians from the worsening economic and social challenges that have plagued the nation in recent years.

He expressed confidence that with well-structured policies and a strong campaign strategy, the DPP can bring back stability and hope to the people of Malawi.

Just last week, during the submission of his nomination papers for the 2025 presidential race, Mutharika made headlines by naming former Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson, Dr. Jane Ansah, as his running mate.

The decision to pair up with Ansah, a highly educated legal expert and former justice, is widely seen as a bold move to reinforce the DPP’s image of competence and experience.

As the campaign season unfolds, Mutharika’s message signals a clear intention to take on the leadership mantle once more and restore what he describes as “a broken Malawi.”

With the race to State House intensifying, the DPP appears determined to make a strong comeback, backed by policies aimed at winning the hearts and minds of the Malawian electorate.
