Former President Bakili Muluzi has expressed concern over the growing trend of presidential candidates withholding the names of their running mates until the day they submit nomination papers, calling the practice disrespectful to voters.
Speaking to 247 Malawi News, Muluzi said it would be more transparent and beneficial for the public if candidates announced their running mates well in advance to allow for proper scrutiny.

“A running mate is not just a partner to the presidential candidate. This is someone who could potentially become the country’s vice president. There is no valid reason to spring such an important decision on voters at the last minute.Malawians deserve to know these individuals in good time,” said Muluzi.
The former United Democratic Front (UDF) leader pointed to his own precedent, noting that he introduced his running mate, the late Justin Malewezi, two years before the 1999 elections.
He added that he also publicly named Bingu wa Mutharika as his successor nearly two years ahead of the 2004 polls.
“It is a governance issue. You cannot keep people guessing or make surprise announcements. It is simply not fair. Hopefully, candidates in the future will handle this more responsibly,” he said.
Out of all presidential aspirants who have so far unveiled their running mates, only independent candidate Milward Tobias announced his running mate a day before presenting nomination papers.
The remaining candidates waited until the day of submission to reveal their choices.
