By Vincent Gunde

Political activist Bon Kalindo has vowed to be arrested, prosecuted and die for the Malawi National flag to liberate the country.

The declaration by Kalindo to die for the national flag comes the second after President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera made the same sentiments on 6th July, 2024 marking 60 years Independence celebrations national prayers in Lilongwe at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC).

Kalindo calls Malawi to embrace the spirit of Chilima

Kalindo said Malawians are to judge themselves on who exactly is telling the country’s citizens the truth that he will die for the national flag after Dr. Chilima assuring the MCP led government that many Malawians will die for the national flag if government releases a bogus investigation report on the death of Dr. Chilima and eight others.

Speaking through an audio clip circulating in various social media platforms, Kalindo said Malawians must pray very hard so that the investigation report satisfies their expectations with a warning to government to bless itself for tougher times after the release of the Report.

Kalindo said memories are still flesh that the MCP which was known to kill people, suspects being thrown into the Shire River for crocodile meat is still hovering around in the country closing mouth of the citizens for them not to express their concerns to the authorities.

He said in 1994 Malawi made a declaration that never again shall the country go back to the them MCP dictatorship and one- party state assuring Malawians that even if he can be arrested, moving from one police cell, one prison to another, he will remain Kalindo fighting for the liberation of the country, from within the country.

The activist said Malawians are anxiously waiting for the truth to prevail on what exactly led the military aircraft to crash in the Chikangawa forest in Mzimba district killing Dr. Saulosi Chilima and eight others on Monday 10th June, 2024.

He has called upon Malawians mourning Dr. Chilima and eight others through Candlelight Memorial Services to wear the spirit of Dr. Chilima in “Osaopa, Osafooka slogan” to continue doing the same until the truth is revealed advising families to light their candles every day before  going to bed.
“The spirit of Dr. Saulosi Chilima will not rest in peace and in power, if the truth is covered through investigations to side with government for a no foul play in the Chikangawa forest,” said Kalindo.

Meanwhile, Kalindo has described government’s action of deploying over 200 police officers at the time he was appearing before the Magistrate court in Mangochi as a waste of taxpayers’ money which could have procured medical drugs for a health centre in Mangochi district.

Kalindo said the way the police provided security in Mangochi, has given him renewed commitment to die for the poor in Malawi that next, he will be travelling in a Police convoy moving from one police station and one prison to another with sirens.

Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Pacific Limited on June 18,2024 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), in which Pacific Limited will construct hostels accommodating up to 3,000 students.

The MoU details that Pacific Limited will source land outside the MUST campus, while MUST will ensure the accommodation units meet standards and assist the company in lobbying the government for tax waivers on some construction material imports.

According to Pacific Limited Chairperson Faizal Aboo, the company plans to construct hostels in Blantyre, Lilongwe, and Mzuzu, prioritizing MUST due to the pressing need for student accommodation.

He stated:”We intend to construct the hostels in phases, with the first phase potentially ready by December this year. We believe this venture will fulfill our corporate social responsibilities.”

He said Pacific Limited plans to build hostels across the country with over 40,000 bed spaces but the company requires government waivers to make this feasible.

Aboo explained:”Our estimation shows that around 60% of the construction cost will go towards taxes. If these were waived, the cost could significantly decrease.”

MUST Registrar Alfred Chinombo noted that the hostel construction will alleviate accommodation challenges.

“Accommodation has been a challenge, along with other necessities like laboratory facilities, staff houses, and teaching space. While the government has supported us with laboratories and teaching space, we still struggle with student accommodation, particularly due to our location,” said Chinombo.

He clarified that the MoU does not legally bind MUST to anything beyond assisting Pacific Limited in securing government support for the project.

MUST is Malawi’s fourth public university, established by the Act of Parliament Number 31 of 2012.

The university was officially opened on October 24, 2014, by former President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

Its establishment aimed to fill gaps in higher education and human resource development, promoting science, technology, and innovation for Malawi’s macro- and microeconomic development.

The Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) are dreading the prospect of Dr Ken Zikhale Ng’oma becoming the Vice President of Malawi Congress Party at the forthcoming MCP elective Convention. The Party knows their chances of winning next year’s elections are over as Zikhale is a master strategist whose moves will finish DPP completely.

Zikhale Ng’oma announced a few days ago that he will be standing for the Vice Presidency position. Since his announcement,he has quickly risen to become the favourite to win the position. As it is now, it’s just a matter of the convention happening for Zikhale to be announced as the First Vice President.

Hon Zikhale

This publication has accessed some WhatsApp conversations amongst DPP strategists, with them confessing that the candidate they fear most is Hon Zikhale. DPP believes Zikhale Ng’oma is just too much of a political tactician and that with him as Vice President MCP will be very difficult to beat next year.

In one of the rallies recently, Zikhale announced that he is ready to work hard so that President Chakwera should win over 70% of the votes next year. Many people doubted this , but as the days go and with Zikhale as the Vice President, delegates and MCP faithfuls are believing this will be a possibility

Mangochi hospital gets blood bank fridge donation from NBM

National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Plc has donated a blood bank refrigerator worth K40 million to Mangochi district hospital in Mangochi district.

Speaking after receiving the donation, Director of Health and Social Services (DHSS) for Mangochi district Dr. Henry Chibowa Jnr, expressed gratitude to the bank for the kind gesture saying the new blood bank will play a significant role in saving more lives of people in need of blood in the district and surrounding areas.

Chibowa said, “We have had a number of challenges in terms of giving blood to those people who need it in Mangochi. On a monthly basis we need about close to 400 blood transfusions that are supposed to be done but because of capacity challenges in terms of how much blood we can keep and stole in our bank, we had a number of challenges. With the coming in of this fridge which is 50 percent bigger than the fridge that we have, we feel that that the problems are going to be alleviated.”

Chibowa further said that the donation will help to solve the transportation challenges that most hospitals in the district experience to access blood from MBTS’s blood transfusion center in Balaka.

In his remarks, MBTS Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. Bridon M’baya said the donation will significantly improve access to safe blood for communities served by Mangochi district hospital and other surrounding hospitals like Monkey-bay Community Hospital as well as Koche, St Martins and Mulibwanji Mission Hospitals.

He said the blood bank fridge will act as the storage facility for all the hospitals in the district.

“As we are continuously improving our supply of blood in health facilities there are several financial and operational challenges that we are facing which include inadequate blood storage facilities. Therefore, with this kind gesture from the corporate organizations we are confident that we will be able to achieve our vision and mission of supplying safe and adequate blood and blood products which will in turn save more lives,” said M’baya.

According to National Bank Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Harold Jiya, the donation was in response to an appeal made by Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) for financial help to procure blood bank fridges in some districts across the country.

Jiya said the donation is a life-changing commitment the bank made in December, 2023 to donate 2 percent of its profit after tax to corporate social investments.

“As National Bank we do set aside 2 percent of our profit after tax for life changing initiatives under our corporate social investment program. So, we did identify the gap that is there in terms of blood transportation and storage that’s why we decided to come in and help MBTS in saving the lives of those people in need of blood,” said Jiya.

To access blood from MBTS, hospitals are required to collect blood from the organization’s centres which are located in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Balaka.

This is challenging for hospitals that are located in remote areas making it difficult for them to access blood from MBTS in good time.

It is against this background that National Bank of Malawi committed K80 million for the purchase of two blood bank fridges for MBTS to help ease shortage of blood at Mangochi and Mulanje District Hospitals.

The bank has since pledged more support to MBTS and said they will soon start helping the organization in servicing some of its blood banks.

Apart from Mangochi and Mulanje, MBTS has blood bank fridges at Karonga, Kasungu and Nkhotakota district hospitals as well as Ngabu rural hospital in Chikwawa district.
