The Central Region Committee of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officially endorsed Abida Sidik Mia for the position of Second Deputy President during a ceremony held on Saturday July 13, 2024, at the party’s regional offices in Lilongwe. The endorsement, led by Regional Chairperson Zebron Chilondola and supported by all delegates, is a key development ahead of the party’s elective convention on August 8, 2024, at the Bingu National Convention Centre in Lilongwe.
The endorsement was marked by a compelling presentation from Mia’s aide, who highlighted her contributions and qualifications. The aide posed a rhetorical question to the delegates: “Why should Honorable Abida Sidik Mia be your choice for the 2nd Deputy President of the party?” This question set the stage for a detailed explanation of Mia’s merits.

According to the aide, Mia is ideally suited for the role due to her strong work ethic, strategic insight, and proven ability to execute tasks effectively. Her mission includes supporting President Lazarus Chakwera’s bid for re-election in 2025 and strengthening the party’s presence in the Southern region, which is known for its political challenges. Mia, an MCP MP from the South, has already demonstrated her effectiveness by securing additional seats for the party after electoral disputes in the Shire Valley.
The aide also underscored the significance of electing a capable woman like Mia to the upper echelons of MCP leadership, portraying it as a progressive step for the party.
When Mia took the podium, she shared her inspiring journey, including her background, partnership with the late Sidik Mia, and her contributions to the party. She affirmed her dedication to the MCP and her commitment to supporting President Chakwera’s campaign.
Regional Chairperson Chilondola praised Mia’s leadership qualities and her historical support for the party, including her efforts during the 2019 elections to combat electoral irregularities.
In a final endorsement, Abraham Liwonde, spokesperson for the Central Region Committee, declared, “What we have bound here on earth is also bound in heaven. Honorable Abida Sidik Mia shall be the Second Deputy President of the MCP come August 8, 2024.”
As of now, Mia stands unopposed for the position, following the withdrawal of her sole competitor, Mr. Hassan, who has expressed support for her candidacy. This endorsement positions Mia as a key figure in the MCP’s leadership and sets the stage for her anticipated role in the party’s future.

Moyale Barracks Football Club registered their first away victory following their 2-1 win over Mighty Mukuru Wanderers in a match played on Saturday afternoon at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
The Nomads dominated possession in the first half, creating a number of scoring opportunities but failed to convert them into goals with cameroonian striker Sama Thierry Tanjong and Gadie Chirwa among the culprits.
On the other hand, the visitors utilised their only chance in the first half to take the lead through Emmanuel Allan with just five minutes before half time.

The second half saw Wanderers coach Meke Mwase making a double substitution, bringing in the fresh legs of Christopher Kumwembe and Francisco Madinga replacing Sama and Wisdom Mpinganjira respectively.
The Nomads continued to dominate possession in the second half but still failed to find the back of the net until in the added time when Isaac Kaliati equalised from a free-kick following a foul on a Nomads player at the edge of the penalty box.
Just when everybody thought the match was going to end in a stalemate, substitute Luke Chima had other thoughts as he headed home from a corner-kick just two minutes after the Nomads’ goal to give the Lions of Kaning’ina the much needed away win.
This was Meke Mwase’s first loss in four league games in charge since the departure of the former coach Sanzurwimo Ramadhan.
The loss has left the Lali Lubani boys on the second position with 21 points, a point behind third place Kamuzu Barracks (KB) and eight points behind league leaders Silver Strikers who are playing KB on Sunday.
Moyale Barracks have now moved to position six after accumulating 17 points from 12 games.
In other matches played on Saturday, Mighty Tigers gave away their 2-nil lead to loose 2-3 at home against Mafco FC.
Tigers got their goals from Daniel Shadreck and Masambiro Kalua while the visitors scored through Peter Kasonga, Mphatso Phillimon and Auspicious Kadzongola.
In Lilongwe, a lone goal from Yamikani Tambala was enough to give Creck Sporting maximum points against struggling Bangwe All Stars.
Elsewhere, Karonga United thumped rookies FOMO FC 3-nil at Karonga Stadium courtesy of a brace from Blessings Mwalilino and another goal from Allen Chihana.
Apart from the KB silver match, there will be three more games to take place on Sunday as defending champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets hosts Civil Service United at Kamuzu Stadium.
Fifth placed Mzuzu City Hammers will be at home against Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos as Chitipa United play Baka City at Karonga Stadium.
