NBS Bank took center stage as the main sponsor of the event, which drew in over 100 golfers from various sectors, including senior officers from the MDF and Tanzania Defence Force (TDF).

The tournament aimed to honor and uplift the welfare of Malawi’s war veterans, with Minister of Defence Harry Mkandawire gracing the occasion as the guest of honor.

Other notable attendees included MDF Commander Paul Valentino Phiri, TDF’s Major General Wilbert Ibuge, and the CEO of NBS Bank.

This year’s event highlighted the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by military veterans and their families.

The golf tournament served as a platform to promote camaraderie and sportsmanship among participants, while also raising awareness about the challenges faced by veterans.

In a move that has sent shockwaves of excitement throughout the Malawian football community, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced the return of two legendary figures, Kinnah Phiri and Young Chimodzi, to the Malawi national team, Flames, as technical advisors.

Kinnah Phiri

This development comes hot on the heels of FAM’s executive committee meeting on Friday, which aimed to revamp the technical panel ahead of the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Kinnah Phiri, a name synonymous with Malawian football, brings an unparalleled wealth of experience to the team.

His illustrious coaching career spans over two decades, with notable stints at both club and national levels.

Phiri’s previous tenure as Flames head coach saw the team qualify for the 2010 African Cup of Nations, a feat that remains etched in the memories of Malawian football enthusiasts.

Young Chimodzi, another stalwart of Malawian football, joins Phiri as a technical advisor.

Chimodzi’s expertise, garnered from years of coaching and playing, will provide invaluable insight to the team.

His familiarity with local talent and football dynamics will be crucial in shaping the team’s strategy.

The return of Phiri and Chimodzi has sparked widespread jubilation among Flames supporters, who see their reunion with the team as a harbinger of success.

“This is a dream come true,” exclaimed Griffin Msiska, a local football enthusiast. “Kinnah and Young have the magic to turn our team around.”

Phiri and Chimodzi’s reunion with Flames also marks a significant turning point in the team’s fortunes.

Their combined expertise will provide a much-needed boost to the team’s technical panel.

“We are thrilled to have Kinnah and Young on board,” said FAM President, Fleetwood Haiya adding that,”Their experience and knowledge will be invaluable in our quest for success.”

While the spotlight shines brightly on Phiri and Chimodzi, Kalisto Pasuwa, head coach of FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, has been appointed interim head coach of Flames.

Pasuwa’s experience in Malawian football and his success with Big Bullets make him an ideal candidate to lead Flames on an interim basis.

Pasuwa will be joined by his trusted assistant, Peter Mponda, and Moyale Barracks head coach, Prichard Mwansa.

Mponda’s reunion with Pasuwa will provide continuity, while Mwansa’s expertise will add depth to the technical panel.

The appointment of Pasuwa and the return of Phiri and Chimodzi follow the dismissal of Patrick Mabedi as head coach on Monday.

Mabedi’s tenure was marked by disappointing results, which ultimately led to his ouster.

As Flames embark on a new chapter, the focus shifts to the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

With Phiri and Chimodzi at the helm as technical advisors, Malawian football fans can dare to dream of success

Blantyre, Malawi – Silver Strikers Football Club has made it clear that they will not release their head coach, Peter Mponda, to assist Callisto Pasuwa in taking care of the Malawi national team, the Flames. This comes after the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) sacked Patrick Mabedi as the Flames’ head coach.

According to sources, FAM had plans to appoint Pasuwa as the new head coach of the Flames, with Mponda as his assistant. However, Silver Strikers have refused to let go of their coach, citing that FAM had not officially approached them.

Peter Mponda

“We have not received any official communication from FAM regarding the release of our coach,” said Patrick Chimimba, Silver Strikers’ General Secretary. “We cannot just let him go without being approached formally. We have our own goals and objectives to achieve, and Coach Mponda is an integral part of our team.”

Chimimba further stated that the club values Mponda’s contributions and does not want to lose him, especially during a critical period in the Super League.

“Coach Mponda has been instrumental in our success, and we cannot afford to lose him at this point,” Chimimba emphasized. “We understand the importance of the national team, but our interests come first.”

Meanwhile, FAM has confirmed that Pasuwa will take over as the Flames’ head coach, with Mponda and Pritchard Mwansa, the coach of Moyale Barracks, as his assistants.

“We are excited to have Pasuwa on board and believe he will bring the necessary experience and expertise to the team,” said FAM President, Fleetwood Haiya. “We are also confident that Mponda and Mwansa will provide valuable support to Pasuwa.”

However, with Silver Strikers refusing to release Mponda, FAM’s plans may be disrupted.

“We will have to revisit our plans and consider other options,” Haiya admitted. “We understand Silver Strikers’ position, but we hope to find a solution that works for everyone.”

The development has sparked debate among football fans in Malawi, with some questioning Silver Strikers’ decision.

“I understand that Silver Strikers want to keep their coach, but this is about the national team,” said football analyst, Kim Kamau “Mponda’s experience would be invaluable to the Flames. I hope they can find a way to release him.”

Others have praised Silver Strikers for prioritizing their interests.

“Silver Strikers have every right to protect their interests,” said another fan, Chikumbutso Chirwa. “They cannot just release their coach without being approached formally. FAM should respect that.”

As the saga unfolds, Malawi’s football fraternity waits with bated breath to see how this will affect the Flames’ performance in upcoming matches.

In a related development, Pasuwa has expressed his excitement about taking over as the Flames’ head coach.

“I am honored to serve my country , Malawi is my second home and look forward to working with the team,” Pasuwa said. “We have a lot of work to do, but I am confident we can achieve great things.”
