A snap survey in the Capital City Lilongwe has revealed that the availability of fuel especially petrol has improved.

A visit at Total , filling stations , petroda and most Puma gas station had all had sufficient stock.

Some motorists in Lilongwe have commended Government for the development saying by paying the balances to fuel suppliers they hoped the situation will continue like this.

Meanwhile, Political , Governance and economic commentator Dr Ben Dzolowere ,has hailed Government for normalising fuel situation.

Dr Dzolowere said fuel is very important for the growth of our economy.

Few days ago, Dr Dzolowere condemned overgrowing tendencies by dishonest gas station owners have been doing in hoarding fuel in order to sell the product at an adjusted price to some advantaged groups.

Speaking in an exclusive interview following the news that some filling stations especially those belonging to members of the opposition are deliberately hoarding the product as one way of frustrating Government effort.

This is what Dr Dzolowere said:

“Hoarding is commonly criticized for creating shortages of goods in the real economy. It is possible for hoarding to create a cycle of speculation, self-fulfilling prophecies, and inflation. If several wealthy individuals start hoarding  fuel, sugar, prices will begin to increase.

He gave an example of what happened in Zambia where the International Consumer Unity and Trust Society (CUTS) applauded the decision taken by the Zambia Competition Commission’s (ZCC) to probe the extent to which Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) were engaged in the alleged hoarding of fuel.

He said there was recent speculation that OMCs was hoarding fuel on cheaper days to make more money from consumers when prices increase.

There have been long queues of motorists at filling stations where fuel was made available due to the recent shortage that hit the country.

CUTS-International felt that a major drive to curb fuel hoarding and scarcity nationwide needs to be undertaken as this if not checked will greatly lead to consumers being denied a service they need.

He said hoarding of fuel also lead to economic development being stalled as productivity is affected by consumers failing to report for work, as well as machines not being used for production due to non availability of fuel.

Meanwhile, Malawi Energy Regulations Authority (MERA) has warned against the practice.

By Burnett Munthali

Mangochi—In a significant meeting held at his private residence, PAGE House, former Malawian President and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate for the 2025 elections, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, welcomed a delegation of councillors from Mangochi District. The gathering underscored Mutharika’s focus on advancing Mangochi’s infrastructure and tourism as essential pillars of growth and sustainable development.

The event, highly anticipated among local leaders, served as an open forum for the councillors to engage directly with Mutharika and hear his vision for Mangochi’s future. Known for its strategic location on Lake Malawi’s shores, Mangochi holds immense potential in terms of tourism, a sector Mutharika plans to leverage fully.

Vision for infrastructure development

During the meeting, Mutharika shared his intentions to invest heavily in Mangochi’s infrastructure if elected. Recognizing the district’s challenges, he expressed his commitment to building robust road networks and improving public facilities that would enhance the quality of life for residents and ease access to tourist destinations.

Mutharika outlined the urgent need to upgrade key routes connecting Mangochi to surrounding districts, which he sees as crucial for promoting commerce and tourism. “Mangochi is a treasure of Malawi,” he said, adding, “To unlock its full potential, we must start with infrastructure that supports the movement of goods, services, and people.”

Promoting tourism as an economic engine

One of the most compelling aspects of Mutharika’s vision for Mangochi is his plan to promote tourism as a leading economic driver. With a natural coastline, historical sites, and beautiful landscapes, Mangochi remains a top destination for both domestic and international visitors. Mutharika emphasized that the district’s potential has not been fully realized and that a deliberate strategy to market Mangochi as a premier tourist hub could create jobs, boost local businesses, and attract international investment.

Mutharika proposed partnerships with private and international stakeholders to enhance the district’s appeal. He suggested incentivizing investment in hotels, resorts, and leisure facilities that would draw more tourists. “Mangochi has unique attractions that can put Malawi on the global tourism map. My administration will work to build sustainable partnerships that will transform this region into a bustling tourism center,” he stated.

Councillors’ reactions and support

The councillors welcomed Mutharika’s vision with optimism, expressing their gratitude for his interest in elevating Mangochi. Some of the councillors highlighted the district’s struggles with insufficient funding and lack of development projects in recent years. They noted that Mutharika’s ideas aligned well with the community’s aspirations for growth.

“We are grateful for this opportunity to sit with Professor Mutharika and hear his plans directly,” said one of the councillors. “His vision reflects what we have long needed in Mangochi—focused development that brings real change.”

Strengthening community engagement

Mutharika closed the meeting by reiterating his commitment to listening to the people of Mangochi and other regions in Malawi. He emphasized the importance of local leaders in achieving development goals and pledged to maintain open channels of communication with councillors and residents.

As the DPP candidate for the 2025 polls, Mutharika has made it clear that his vision includes not only national projects but also focused development initiatives like those proposed for Mangochi. His meeting with the councillors underscores his intention to lead a campaign centered around practical solutions and inclusive growth.

As the race toward the 2025 elections unfolds, Mutharika’s plans for Mangochi have positioned him as a candidate committed to both regional development and the empowerment of local governance. His proposals have already stirred significant interest, and many will be watching closely to see how his vision for Mangochi aligns with his broader objectives for the nation.

Governance and Human Rights Advocate Undule Mwakasungula says he is surprised with Sylvester Namiwa’s resignation from the Commission of Inquiry on the plane crash.

In a statement released on 1st November, 2024 signed by Mwakasungula, sighted Namiwa’s resignation as lack of commitment as he accepted the position and even took an oath to serve.

Mwakasungula and Namiwa

“Mr. Namiwa has always been outspoken on important issues, and he advocated strongly for the Commission to be set up in the first place. In fact, he was one of the even loudest voices pushing for the inquiry, even threatening to demonstrate when there were delays in forming,” Mwakasungula said.

He therefore described his decision as inconsistent with his earlier position.

Mwakasungula said Malawians had hope that Namiwa’s participation will add value as he could have contributed to fuller understanding of what happen, as it stands Mwakasungula feels that Namiwa has missed an opportunity to serve Malawians.

“Stepping down at this point also limits Mr. Namiwa’s influence. While he could continue to speak from outside the Commission, his impact might have stronger from within and allowed him to engage fully in the process and contribute to the final findinds,” he added.

He also feels the decision by Namiwa was made in a hurry and emotional without clear reflection on the impact as it may be viewed by some as unpatriotic as he is running from his duty to serve Malawians.

He has since therefore said he hopes Namiwa will still be open to help the Commission as an information source despite his resignation.

He further said the Commission’s work will help to heal and bring unity for the country as the findings and recommendations could bring closure to the victim’s families and to all Malawians.
