Opposition parties demand suspension of election registration process

By Chisomo Phiri

Four opposition parties in parliament, including United Transformation Movement (UTM), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Alliance for Democracy(AFORD) , and United Democratic Front (UDF),have given authorities November 14,2024 a deadline to suspend the 2025 elections registration process due to irregularities.

During a joint press briefing in Lilongwe on Wednesday, the opposition parties threatened to hold demonstrations if their demands are not met.

DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba stated:”We are demanding that registrations must be discontinued within two weeks; otherwise, there will be intense demonstrations.”

DPP’s Jean Mathanga highlighted that phase one of civic and voter education commenced late, which is an anomaly.

She emphasized the need for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to restart the process to ensure equal opportunities for all registrants.

Mathanga stressed:”We want all registrants to have equal opportunities for voter and civic education; therefore, the processes need to start all over again.”

The opposition parties also demanded the removal of certain appointed officials at the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for the sake of neutrality in their execution of duties.

Top on the list is the commission’s chairperson, Annabel Mtalimanja, who is believed to be Malawi Congress Party (MCP) sympathizer – a party with a vested interest in the elections.

This position was particularly emphasized by UDF vice-president Rahim Osman.

The MEC has been working towards conducting free, fair, credible elections, with a comprehensive voter education campaign in place.

However, the opposition parties’ concerns and demands have raised questions about the integrity of the electoral process.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the authorities will respond to the opposition’s demands and ensure a fair and transparent electoral process.

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has said  government will continue developing the country through infrastructure projects to ease  transportation of goods for farmers and create a conducive business environment.

Speaking Wednesday, during a whistle whistle-stop tour at Ntchisi Boma, President Chakwera said natural disasters are hindering entrepreneurship as well as farming in the district as farmers’ harvests continue to decrease leaving them with little to rely on.

“I know people in Ntchisi are hardworking and very committed to work but famine occurred due to El Niño weather. So government will help you either through irrigation farming or rain-fed Agriculture.

I have already communicated to the Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Minister of Finance, Gender and Minister of Agriculture. They are doing all the needful like Social Cash Transfer as well as Affordable Input fertilizer,” Chakwera said.

Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda stated that government is doing various interventions to make sure that people are benefiting from government programmes.

He condemned officers who put names of the same people in various government interventions saying others also need to benefit from government programmes.

Senior Chief Malenga hailed the government for various development projects that are taking place in Ntchisi district.

Malawi’s Fuel Crisis Hits Minibus Owners, Sparks Calls for Government Intervention

By Burnett Munthali

The Minibus Owners Association of Malawi (MOAM) has voiced serious concerns over the ongoing fuel crisis, which has left their businesses struggling as the black market inflates fuel prices to K8,000 per liter. MOAM President Coxley Kamange shared with Zodiak Online that the crisis has affected not only Malawi’s economy but also the ability of minibus owners to maintain their operations, pay employees, and cover essential costs like spare parts.

“The challenges we face are crippling. It’s becoming difficult for our members to keep their vehicles on the road, let alone sustain their businesses,” Kamange said. He urged the government to take decisive action, focusing on stabilizing fuel availability instead of simply blaming the black market or issuing press releases.

The energy authorities, who recently pointed to forex scarcity as the root cause of the fuel shortage, were unavailable for immediate comment.

Social commentator Caesar Kondowe has echoed MOAM’s concerns, noting that the crisis impacts all Malawians, especially as the scarcity of fuel contributes to price hikes across essential goods, pushing inflation even higher. “The common Malawian is now feeling the pinch,” Kondowe remarked, highlighting the broad economic strain on citizens who already face a high cost of living.

With fuel scarcity worsening, the pressure mounts on government authorities to provide concrete solutions to restore normalcy in Malawi’s transport and goods supply sectors.
