Paramount Chief Kyungu calls for peaceful mourning of late VP Chilima, 8 others

Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa who is also Commissioner for the Malawi Peace and Unity Commission has called on Malawians to peacefully mourn the deaths of the late Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others who died in a plane crash on June 10,2024 in Chikangawa Forest in Mzimba.

Kyungu was speaking Monday June 24,2024 in Karonga, during the opening of a two day training on conflict prevention and peace building organised by the Ministry of Local Government Unity and Culture.

“Late Chilima was a leader who loved peace and the best way to honour him and the others who died in that plane crash is to preach peace.

“I would like to advise Malawians especially youths to desist from violent acts which may lead to unnecessary loss of lives,”said Kyungu.

Malawians are still in a 21- day period of mourning the late Chilima and eight others,declared by President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.

The mourning period ends on Monday July 1,2024.

Malawi Posts Corporation to suspend Post Bus Service operations over persistent losses

The Malawi Posts Corporation (MPC) has announced that it will indefinitely suspend its Post Bus Service operations starting on from June 30 this year due to persistent losses.

In a notice to its customers shared on its official Facebook page,the company says it has been experiencing challenges in delivering satisfactory services to its customers due to the old age of its fleet, which requires frequent maintenance, leading to rising operational costs in the process.

The company says since its inception in 2019, its buses have been transporting over 1.3 million passengers between Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu, and Karonga, among others.



Reads the notice in part:”Despite the challenges, management remains committed to providing a reliable and efficient public transportation service.

“The corporation apologizes for any inconvenience this suspension may cause to passengers, the business community, and the public.

“Management is determined to restrategize and revamp the service, aiming to return with a revitalized and sustainable Post Bus service.

“Malawi Posts Corporation expresses gratitude to the public for their trust and support of the Post Bus brand over the years.”

Commenting on the matter, an economic expert, Christopher Mbukwa, says the development will affect employees of the company through a possible retrenchment and the economy of the country at large.

On the other hand, Executive Director (ED) of the Road Safety Alert Foundation (ROSAF), Joel Jere, while describing the development as a drawback in the transportation sector, feels the decision is timely for the company to work on the challenge as its buses were frequently involved in breakdowns and accidents.

In line with Malawi’s Agenda 2063 enabler number six, which demands that there is need for economic infrastructure to spur economic growth, the Lilongwe City Council (LCC) has disclosed plans to build new bus terminal in Lilongwe replacing the dilapidated depot which has remained a laughing stock in the face of international community.

Malawi Agenda 2063 says there is need to have globally competitive economic infrastructure that will promote domestic economic activity and spur foreign direct investments for wealth creation and these economic infrastructures includes ;  energy, ICT, roads, railway, water and airports.

Addressing the press conference in Lilongwe on Monday, Lilongwe City Council Chief Executive Officer, Dr Macloud Kadam’manja, discussions are progressing well over financing arrangements of the flagship projects.

He said Lilongwe will have state of the art depot which will also house the international buses. On top of the new depot, Lilongwe City Council is also embarking on the project aimed at building the new shopping complex at Old Wenela in Lilongwe again discussions are progressing well.

According, to Kadam’manja, the council under the leadership of Dr Lazarus Chakwera has already signed Memorandum of Understanding with Crack Spotting to modernize the Lilongwe Community Ground. Other projects includes: State of the art shopping complex at Malangalanga which will be built under the Public Private Partnership (PPP).

Since Chakwera attained power in 2020, he has managed to embark serious projects such as roads , irrigation , Information , Communication and Technologies and buildings. As we speak Lilongwe City has already changed the face.

In a significant show of solidarity, the Executive Permanent Council of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) has pledged unwavering spiritual backing for President Lazarus Chakwera and his administration.

During a visit to Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, ECM President Desmond Tambala conveyed the Church’s endorsement of Chakwera’s recent appointment of Dr. Michael Biswick Usi (MB-Usi) as the new Vice President, following the tragic passing of the late Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima.

“Our coming was to convey our condolences to the head of state but also to assure him of our prayers and our support for his leadership, including the appointment of the new Vice President,” Tambala told the media after the meeting.

The ECM President emphasized that the Catholic community is keeping the families of the deceased in their prayers, while also firmly standing behind Chakwera’s decisions during this period of national mourning.

During the interaction, President Chakwera reciprocated the heart feeling, taking the opportunity to console the Catholic bishops while acknowledging that Chilima was a devout Catholic faithful. Pres. Chakwera further underscored the close relationship between the government and the faith-based community in Malawi.

Presidential Advisor on Religious Affairs, Reverend Brian Kamwendo, praised the ECM’s visit, highlighting the importance of the Church’s spiritual support for the nation’s leadership, particularly during this challenging time.

The Catholic Church’s endorsement of Chakwera’s appointment of MB-Usi as the new Vice President reflects the influential role of faith-based institutions in Malawi’s political and social landscape. This partnership is seen as a vital source of strength and guidance as the country navigates the path forward.

Bankers Association vows to support President Chakwera’s agenda

In a continued display of solidarity, the Bankers Association of Malawi (BAM) has extended its congratulations to His Excellency, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, the President of the Republic of Malawi, on his recent appointment of a new Vice President Dr. MB-Usi.

This gesture comes at a time of national mourning, as the country grapples with the tragic loss of the late Right Honourable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others in a plane crash.

Newly appointed BAM President Phillip Madinga led a delegation of bankers to Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, where they conveyed their condolences to President Chakwera

Amidst the grief, Madinga emphasized the importance of moving the country forward, stating, “The President needs a pillar on his side. A vice president is very important if we are to forge ahead with the agenda of Malawi’s economy.”

The meeting provided an opportunity for the BAM delegation to introduce the new BAM Executive to President Chakwera.

Madinga expressed the association’s commitment to supporting the Vision Malawi 2063 Agenda and the Malawi Implementation Plan (MIP), highlighting the banking industry’s willingness to collaborate on initiatives such as the Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining (ATM) Strategy, as well as the development of Mega Farms, which are seen as critical for the country’s future.

Presidential Press Secretary Anthony Kasunda acknowledged the significance of the BAM’s visit, stating that President Chakwera finds comfort in the support and encouragement of the people during this painful time.

The Bankers Association of Malawi’s pledge to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with President Chakwera and his administration underscores the crucial role of the financial sector in driving Malawi’s economic transformation.
