Social media early this week has been awash with reports involving fertilizer business deal made between the Salima Sugar and Nyasa Hills Company where a transaction of upfront payment of K200Million was made to Nyasa Hills.

This publication took time to examine variables and genesis of the whole issue in order to find the truth of the matter.

Investigations made indicate that the business transactions indeed took place between the two entities in this case Salima Sugar and Nyasa Hills. We can furthur speak with determination that the business was genuine with no ill motive behind.

Background

Unlike what social media has been spreading, in 2024, Malawi experienced shortage of sugar cane fertilizer called MAP and MOP. This is a specialized fertiliser which is used in Sugar cane farming.

This is the same reason the company engaged the pre qualified companies to help in supplying the product of which Nyasa Hills qualified on the matter since had an existing supplier in China.

The supplier assured to lift the product but requested upfront payment of K200 Million which Salima Sugar honoured.

Money Transfer

On 15 April , 2024, Salima Sugar transferred K190Million into Nyasa Hills and later on 22 April, 2024, the same company completed transaction with the transfer of K10Million making a total of K200million.

This publication has also verified and certified that Nyasa Hills made payments to the MOP , MAP Chinese Supplier Xingtai Ruijin Import and Export Company on 25 April , 2024

SUPPLIER EXTRA DEMAND

The fertilizer supplier demanded that Nyasa Hills should pay off the whole fertilizer amount which was K604, 293, 888. What it meant was that Nyasa Hills had uphill battle of sourcing additional K400Million to have Bill of Lading done. These were fresh demand made after earlier assuring the company to release the product with the quarter payment.

CONCLUSION- SALIMA SUGAR ENGAGES THE LEGAL TEAM

This publication can also ascertain that after noting delays in supplying the product, Salima Sugar engaged their Retainer Lawyers Chris and Legal to demand return of the K200 Million due to contractual breach and recover the money.
This publication can testify that Chris and Legal are currently pursuing the matter.

Amidst baseless social media attacks, Salima Sugar Company Limited and its stalwart leader, Counsel Wester Peter Kosamu, deserve recognition for their tireless efforts in steering the company towards progress.

Despite facing governance challenges due to the previous government’s inaction in appointing a board for three years, Kosamu has remained resolute in his commitment to Malawians.

Under his leadership, the company has ensured timely payment of salaries to employees and growers, promoted local business, and fostered strong relationships with surrounding communities through impactful Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.

The upcoming investment of $650 million from an African investor, aimed at expanding sugar production, fertilizer, and ethanol plants, presents a significant opportunity for the country’s economic growth. We urge the new government to swiftly constitute a board comprising experts in relevant fields to expedite this crucial process, which will help alleviate the country’s foreign exchange shortages.

Kossam has defended the move to recover the money.

Two retired Malawian leaders, Bakili Muluzi and Joyce Banda, have confirmed that they will attend the inauguration of Peter Mutharika as the country’s next president this coming Saturday in Blantyre.

The two leaders told the local media today that the swearing-in ceremony is an important national event that calls for unity among Malawians.

They emphasized that their attendance is motivated by a desire to promote peace, strengthen togetherness, and uphold democratic values.

Bakili Muluzi stated that he believes in democracy, and by attending the ceremony, he is also appealing to all leaders who did not win in the elections to participate in order to demonstrate unity.

Banda

He added that the event presents an opportunity for Malawians to rise above political differences and move forward as one nation.

The ceremony comes just days after Peter Mutharika was officially declared the winner of Malawi’s 2025 general elections by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

Mutharika, who led the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) into the polls, secured victory in a tightly contested race that saw strong competition from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) led by Lazarus Chakwera and the United Transformation Movement (UTM).

According to MEC, Mutharika’s win was marked by a significant margin in key regions of the Southern and Eastern parts of the country, while his rivals performed strongly in the Central and Northern regions.

The elections were largely peaceful, though reports of logistical delays and isolated irregularities were raised by opposition parties.

International observers, including the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), described the elections as credible, transparent, and reflective of the will of the people, while urging all parties to accept the results and focus on national development.

Mutharika has promised to prioritize economic reforms, youth empowerment, and the fight against corruption during his new term in office.

However, uncertainty remains over whether former president Lazarus Chakwera will attend the ceremony.

Anthony Kasunda, a spokesperson for Chakwera, revealed that a formal letter has been issued regarding Chakwera’s attendance or absence from the event.

This development underscores the political divisions that continue to linger in the country following the election results, even as calls for national unity grow louder.

The attendance of Muluzi and Banda is therefore seen as a symbolic gesture of reconciliation and an effort to foster national healing in the aftermath of a competitive and sometimes tense election season.

Malawi is set to witness a historic moment this Saturday as President elect Peter Mutharika and Vice President elect Jane Ansah take their oaths of office at Kamuzu Stadium.

The ceremony, which is open to the public, will be attended by President Lazarus Chakwera, Vice President Michael Usi, and several regional dignitaries.

The Ministry of Information and Digitilisation confirmed the attendance of regional leaders from the Southern African Development Community (SADC), highlighting the event’s significance for Malawi’s relations within the region.

Chakwera

“We expect a grand turnout as this marks a peaceful transition of power,” said Principal Secretary Baldwin Chiyamwaka.

Former President Bakili Muluzi also confirmed his presence, signaling the unity of Malawi’s political leaders in celebrating the country’s democratic process.

Mutharika, representing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), emerged victorious in the September 16 elections, defeating the incumbent, President Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

His victory marks a significant political shift in Malawi, ending the five-year term of Chakwera’s administration.

Observers say the inauguration will not only be a ceremonial event but also a platform to reinforce Malawi’s commitment to democratic governance and regional cooperation.

Security measures are expected to be heightened, given the anticipated attendance of high-profile leaders and the public interest in the event.

Preparations at Kamuzu Stadium have been in full swing, with organizers assuring the public of a smooth and well-coordinated ceremony. The event will feature traditional cultural performances and speeches aimed at fostering national unity.

Malawi’s citizens are encouraged to attend and witness the ceremony, which reflects the country’s commitment to inclusivity and transparency in democratic processes.

Health authorities in Machinga are on high alert following the detection of a second suspected Mpox case in the district this year.

According to a statement issued by Machinga District Hospital spokesperson Wongani Nyirenda, the case involves a 17-year-old boy from Kwilasha Village, Traditional Authority Sitola, who is currently being kept in isolation to prevent any possible spread of the virus.

Nyirenda revealed that medical teams acted swiftly, collecting samples from the patient and sending them to Lilongwe for laboratory testing. The results are expected soon.

“We are calling on the public to immediately report anyone showing symptoms such as sore throat, headache, muscle and back pain, low energy levels, or swollen lymph nodes,” Nyirenda said, stressing that early detection and reporting are key to containing the disease.

Earlier this year, the district recorded its first suspected Mpox case, which later tested negative. However, with Mpox cases resurging in other parts of the country and region, health officials are intensifying community sensitization campaigns.

The Ministry of Health has urged people to avoid direct contact with individuals showing symptoms, maintain proper hygiene and cooperate with health workers to strengthen surveillance efforts and prevent a possible outbreak in Malawi.
