The Women in Faith (WIFA), a community group based in Chirimba, Blantyre, has extended a helping hand to Chileka Health Centre by donating essential medical supplies.

The donation was made over the weekend as part of the group’s commitment to improving healthcare services in their community.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, WIFA Chairperson, Shaereen Chilemba, said the group was motivated by the pressing challenges faced by local health facilities, particularly in maternal and child health.

“We decided to purchase essential medical items such as gloves, blood pressure testing kits, gowns, face masks, boxes for umbilical cords, and other vital supplies. It was our way of giving back to the community and ensuring that health workers have the necessary tools to serve patients effectively,” said Chilemba.

Chilemba added that this donation marks just the beginning of their mission to support Malawi’s health sector.

“Our dream is to continue providing even greater support in the future. We are committed to serving Malawians wholeheartedly and making a difference in people’s lives,” she emphasized.

Receiving the donation, Edina Billiat, a nurse at Chileka Health Centre, expressed gratitude for the timely gesture, highlighting that the supplies will go a long way in addressing some of the facility’s pressing needs.

“We are truly thankful for this donation. We face many challenges here, including a shortage of equipment to monitor newborn babies and other essential maternal health tools. This kind of support is very encouraging, and we hope other well-wishers will emulate this example,” said Billiat.

Chileka Health Centre has been grappling with limited resources, affecting service delivery to expectant mothers and children. The donation is expected to ease some of these challenges while promoting safe delivery practices.

WIFA currently has 45 active members, all hailing from the Chirimba area in Blantyre. The group focuses on empowering women spiritually and socially while engaging in charitable activities aimed at uplifting communities.

Tamia Ja extends helping hand to elderly woman

Renowned Malawian entertainment personality, Hannah Jabes, popularly known as Tamia Ja, has touched hearts after donating essential items and money to an elderly woman in need.

The gesture, which has since gone viral on social media, saw Tamia Ja gifting the elderly woman a 50-kilogram bag of maize, a bag of soya pieces and MK50,000 in cash.

According to a video shared online, Tamia Ja explained that she was deeply moved after witnessing the old woman being turned away when she asked for help from someone else.

“I saw this grandmother pleading for assistance but the person she approached responded harshly, saying he doesn’t help the elderly. Those words broke my heart. I decided to trace the woman, and when I finally found her, I offered her the little I had,” Tamia Ja said in video.

Beyond providing food and money, Tamia Ja went further by appealing to well-wishers to support the elderly woman so she can start a small business and sustain herself.

The act has been widely praised across social media platforms with many Malawians commending Tamia Ja for showing that kindness does not require wealth but a willing heart.

Commentators online noted that such gestures set a good example, especially for celebrities and the youth, to use their platforms and resources to uplift the vulnerable.

In Malawi, where poverty remains widespread, stories like these resonate strongly, reminding communities about the importance of compassion and solidarity.

Tamia Ja’s selfless act comes at a time when social support systems for the elderly are stretched thin, leaving many to depend on the goodwill of individuals and communities.

University of Malawi (Unima) Education students are breathing a sigh of relief after university management scrapped the contentious 9th semester tuition fees.

The decision follows demonstrations staged by the students at the Unima campus, demanding that the fees for the 9th semester be removed.

In a memo dated September 29, Registrar Martin Matululu confirmed that all current 4th-year Education students will not be required to pay tuition fees for the 9th semester.

The university also stated that a new curriculum is being developed, in which Teaching Practice will be embedded within eight semesters, starting with the current 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-year cohorts.

According to the memo, “The new curriculum will have eight semesters, effectively resolving the issue of 9th semester fees and extra costs.”

Observers say this decision addresses long-standing student concerns and reduces financial burdens for Education students, ensuring they can complete their degrees without unexpected additional fees.

University officials emphasized that the restructuring of the curriculum aims to streamline the teaching program while maintaining academic quality and compliance with education standards.

Students welcomed the announcement, describing it as a victory for student activism and a demonstration of the university’s responsiveness to student grievances.

The implementation of the new eight-semester curriculum is expected to begin with the current cohorts, ensuring that future students will not face similar financial challenges.

The decision also reflects broader efforts within the University of Malawi to modernize academic programs, enhance student welfare, and align degree structures with practical teaching requirements.

In a shocking workplace accident on Monday, a 42-year-old Chinese national, Zeng Yuxin, lost his life at the Ng’onga Portland Cement construction site in Balaka.

Authorities say the tragedy unfolded while Yuxin was performing a routine safety task on a milling machine.

According to Balaka Police spokesperson Gladson M’bumpha, Yuxin was working alone, placing safety stickers on the machine during a test run when the accident occurred.

“CCTV footage shows that he was unexpectedly pulled into the machine due to air pressure,” M’bumpha explained.

A postmortem examination conducted at Balaka District Hospital confirmed that Yuxin died from severe injuries sustained in the incident. Police have indicated that investigations into the safety measures at the site are ongoing.

The incident raises serious questions about worker safety protocols at industrial sites in Malawi, especially for foreign nationals who often work in high-risk environments.

Labor experts emphasize the need for strict adherence to safety guidelines, including having more than one worker present when machinery is being tested.

Local community members and colleagues have expressed shock and sorrow over Yuxin’s death, highlighting the emotional toll workplace accidents can have on families and the wider workforce.

This tragedy comes at a time when Malawi is seeing a surge in foreign investment in construction and industrial projects, underscoring the importance of robust safety regulations to prevent avoidable fatalities.

Police have called on all employers in the country to review their safety standards to ensure incidents like this are avoided in the future.

Meanwhile, investigations into the exact circumstances of the accident continue.
