Salima Sugar resumes operations as MBS lift Suspension order

Salima Sugar Company on Wednesday resumed its operations following lifting of Suspension order Malawi Bureau of Standards pelted on the company few days ago.

In a letter addressed to the Company  dated 2 October, 2025,  this publication has seen, the Suspension order lifting is with immediate effect.
What it means is that the full operations resumes immediately.

“Following the Suspension Order that my office issued on the production operations of Salima sugar Company :Limited (Raw Brown Sugar) on 25th September, 2025 due to non-conformance to Malawi Bureau of Standards, especially the Code of hygienic conditions standard, and subsequent redressal of the non-conformities, I hereby order lifting of the Suspension Order,” read the lifting order document.



According to the document the lifting of the Suspension Order follows the verification quality audit conducted by the MBS inspector on 1 October, 2025.

Commenting on the sweet news,  Salima Sugar Company Limited and its stalwart leader, Counsel Wester Peter Kosamu commended MBS for lifting the Suspension order.

Kosamu said the Suspension had negative impact on the Company operations.  The Chair added that the company is committed to ensure quality.

He also commended the role which members of staff contributed towards this lifting of Suspension.

“Farm and factory management escorted me to appreciate the maintenance works as MBS lifts its ban  after we complied with their recommendations which mostly did not affectand as we speak, the production has since resumed,” he said.

He said after some repair works using some equipment we procured from South Africa, three mills are now operational with one mill to be fixed soon while daily production will also eventually improve.

In a special way the chair commended Director of Operations Mr Euvancio
Masamba a retired and experienced personnel from Illovo for a good job as well.

Temwa Chawinga tipped as favourite for NWSL MVP award

Malawi Scorchers striker Temwa Chawinga has been ranked as the favourite to win the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award by renowned American sports outlet ESPN.

The recognition comes with only four rounds of matches remaining in the regular season.

According to ESPN, the 26-year-old forward has been a class apart this year, displaying unmatched consistency and maintaining a commanding presence on the pitch.

Analysts highlighted her ability to deliver in high-pressure matches as one of the biggest reasons she is currently the frontrunner for the coveted individual prize.

Temwa made history last season when she became the first African player to win the NWSL MVP award in her debut campaign.

Now, she stands on the verge of achieving the rare feat of winning it back-to-back, something only a few players have managed in the league’s history.



Her pace, agility and sharp finishing continue to torment defenders across the United States.Week after week, she has delivered decisive goals and assists that have kept her club in contention for the playoffs.

Newly elected  Member of Parliament for Nkhotakota Central Sylvester Ayuba James, has proposed significant reforms aimed at redefining how long national leaders and legislators can serve in office.

James revealed that he intends to present a bill to Parliament calling for the extension of term limits for the President and Members of Parliament (MPs) to seven or eight years per term. According to him, the current practice of holding elections every five years is costly and drains the country’s resources.

“The frequent elections every five years consume a large portion of the national budget, which could otherwise be invested in development projects,” James explained.

“Our goal is to create a system that allows leaders to focus on governance and long-term planning without the constant pressure of election cycles,”he added.

Currently, Malawi’s constitution allows the President and MPs to serve five-year terms before standing for re-election.

James’ proposal, if accepted, would extend these terms, potentially altering the political landscape and reducing the frequency of national campaigns.

James emphasized that his initiative is meant to stimulate national debate and provide Parliament with an opportunity to consider reforms that balance stability with democratic oversight.

The proposed bill is expected to be presented in the coming parliamentary session, where it will be scrutinized and debated by lawmakers.

Former Chikwawa Nkombezi Member of Parliament Abida Mia has publicly rejected recent social media claims linking her to the removal of an electricity transformer in the constituency shortly after the September 16 parliamentary elections.

Speaking to local media, Mia clarified that the transformer, which had long struggled to meet the growing power needs of the area, was replaced by the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) as part of routine infrastructure upgrades.

She emphasized that she had no role in the decision or removal process.

Mia also addressed allegations that she had seized a motorcycle ambulance from Chiphwaila Health Centre and a government vehicle at Thelele. She explained that her involvement was limited to assisting with repair costs for the motorcycle ambulance, while the other vehicle had been officially allocated to Chikwawa District Hospital by government authorities.

Describing the circulating claims as politically motivated, Mia urged residents and her supporters to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could create tension in the community.

ESCOM spokesperson Pilirani Phiri corroborated that the social media reports were misleading and reassured the public that the replacement of the transformer was purely technical.

Phiri added that a detailed explanation regarding the infrastructure work would be shared in due course.

Community leaders in Chikwawa have called for restraint and urged residents to rely on official information rather than social media speculation.

Congolese,two Nigerians nabbed in Lilongwe for illegal entry and forgery

Police in Lilongwe have arrested a Congolese national and two Nigerians for Illegal Entry, Forgery and Obtaining Malawian National Identity Cards under False Pretences.

The arrests were made on Wednesday, October 1, around 9:00 pm during a raid at a lodging house in the Airwing area following intelligence reports of suspicious activity.

The suspects have been identified as Steve Leader Tsamala,aged 36, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bobby Alex Amaliri, 43 years old and John Osita Nwogbo, 43, both from Nigeria.



Police revealed that the trio had entered Malawi with the intention of acquiring national IDs and passports through illegal channels. On arrest, officers found each suspect in possession of newly produced Malawian IDs dated September 22, 2025, along with certificates stamped by a village headman fraudulently declaring them as Malawian citizens.

Investigations show that the suspects had altered their identities on the documents: Steve Tsamala registered as Steve Balaka, Bobby Amaliri as Bobby Alex Mulandire, while John Osita retained his original name.

Authorities say the trio is based in South Africa, where Steve works as a church pastor, Bobby is an electrical engineering student and John serves as a tutor at a skills development college.

They admitted entering Malawi on September 9, 2025, aiming to obtain Malawian documents to improve their employment opportunities in South Africa, claiming that SADC nationals have a higher chance of securing jobs compared to non-SADC citizens.

The suspects failed to present the passports they used to enter Malawi. Meanwhile, detectives are investigating a Malawian man known only as Ishmael, believed to have facilitated the acquisition of the fraudulent documents.

The trio is set to appear in court soon to face charges of Illegal Entry, Forgery and Obtaining Registration by False Pretences, contrary to Section 326 of the Penal Code.
