By Wilfred Golden

Ministry of Transport and Public Works is optimistic that through Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project (SATCP), the country is going to open up trade by removing barriers to trade within Malawi and international market particularly using Nacala and Beira corridors as the country thrives to increase agricultural exports.

Deputy Director in the Department of Policy and Planning in the Ministry of Transport and Public  Works Charles Mtonga said the project seeks to address barriers to trade arranging from physical barriers like infrastructure which includes roads and ports as well as non-tax barriers which include procedures and strategies that countries use to facilitate trade.

Mtonga was saying this during a two day media orientation on SATCP in Mponela.

“As we open up the corridors we will make it bigger and better so as to increase flow of traffic. We have also to look at our exports production as we are working on making our corridors better, so in this project we have a sub-component which is looking at production using the SMEs as the project stipulates, so through the funding from World Bank in this project we are working in providing grants to the identified producers who are SMEs to produce more in increasing our value chain aiming at expanding our export base,”Mtonga said.

Through funding from World Bank, the project seeks to support Malawi and Mozambique in increasing regional trade coordination, reducing trade costs and time as well as developing regional value chains, and improving access to infrastructure.

Hastings Ngoma who is SATCP project manager said all these efforts are going towards reducing trade costs which will require them to look on things like improving infrastructure by building roads.

“We also want to improve the way we do business as this project will involve our partners who are international agencies mainly working in our boarders as we have fourteen implementing agencies.

“We also want to increasing technological advancement in our boarders by reducing manual work as we will introduce systems with our colleagues in agriculture sector as well as Malawi Bureau Standards as one of our implementing agency like how our colleagues in the department of immigration are doing as they are implementing project such as boarder pass system as well as boarder management information system and with our colleagues from agriculture sector we are going to have a system where all business transaction will be done automatic, so we believe this will improve our way of doing business,” Ngoma said.

SATCP is a 6-year World Bank funded project to the tune of 150 million US dollars which started on  June 1, 2021 and is expected to be finalized by  July 31, 2027.

The project is believed to improve regional integration, contribute to structural transformation, job creation and poverty reduction.

The Ministry of Transport is leading in implementation of non-infrastructure  component of the project whereas Roads Authority is leading in implementing infrastructure components of the project which include roads, boarder post, and inland examination centers.

Among other implementing agencies are department of trade, department of agricultural research services, National Construction Industry Council (NCIC), Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), Roads Authority as well as Malawi Bureau of Standards(MBS), just to mention afew.

Speaking when a delegation from EAM consoled President Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace on Tuesday, EAM Vice Chairperson Dr. Maggie Madimbo commended the President for his resilience and patience in handling the crisis.

“You have demonstrated fatherly attributes that the nation desperately needed at this trying and emotional time. This is highly commendable and has left a huge testimony of your Christian witness,” Madimbo added. “We applaud you, Your Excellency, for being proactive in calling for an independent inquiry into this plane crash. The report will go a long way in clearing the misconceptions and mistrust currently prevailing.”

The Vice Chairperson also thanked Malawians for maintaining peace and calm during the period, despite social media being awash with rhetoric glorifying anarchy by some disgruntled individuals.

She explained that the disaster has revealed how polarized our nation is along tribal and party lines and that her organization will actively and aggressively sensitize people across the nation, in churches and communities, to live in harmony and peacefully as one people.

“There is a need to continuously remind ourselves as Malawians to love our nation and be proud of our Malawianness. Sometimes, the comments by some of us tend to be negative and uninspiring,” she said.

Madimbo assured the president that EAM will continue to provide an advisory role wherever necessary to him as a leader in all matters of governance and conduct.

In his remarks, President Chakwera told the delegation that the death of the late Right Honourable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others is painful to him and the Malawi nation.

TNM Super League leaders Silver Strikers and second placed Kamuzu Barracks missed an opportunity to collect maximum points as they were held to a 2-2 and a goalless draws against Mighty Tigers and Baka City respectively.

Silver Strikers gave away their lead twice to draw 2-2 against Mighty Tigers in an entertaining match played at Kamuzu Stadium on Monday afternoon.

The central bankers opened the scoring early, with Duncan Nyoni connecting home a corner from Mark Fodya to give the visitors the 1-0 lead in the 6th minute.

Tigers would look to respond quickly, as they had a number of opportunities to net the equalizer but saw their efforts beautifully defended by the visitors.

Messiah Kachingwe scored Tigers’ equaliser in the 56th minute after receiving a pass from Chimwemwe Ibrahim but Silver restored their lead in the 79th minute through Nickson Mwase who connected with a header a corner kick well delivered by Uchizi Vunga.

Just when everybody thought it was going to be another victory for the capital city giants, Chimwemwe Ibrahim had other thoughts.

Ibrahim who provided an assist in Tigers’ first goal, leveled the scores from a free-kick just some seconds before the end of the match to deny Silver an opportunity to go 9 points clear at the top of the log table .

Despite the result, Silver remain top on the log table with 26 points and Tigers are 10th with 12 points after playing 10 games.

Silver’s next match is against Civil Service United in a capital city derby to be played at Civo Stadium on Sunday.

In Karonga, the match between rookies Baka City and Kamuzu Barracks (KB) ended goalless at Karonga Stadium.

KB are now second on the log table with 19 points, seven points behind league leaders, Silver Strikers while Baka remain bottom with four points after playing 10 games.

By Linda Kwanjana

On 16 June, 2024, Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera pledged to thousands of Malawians who converged at Bingu International Stadium (BIS) that his Government will engage International experts to investigate causes of the plane crush which happened on Monday,  10 June , 2024 at Thungwa Forest Reserve in Chikangawa.

Few days before his BIS assurance, the President met diplomatic Community where he urged the international

Malawi.

Chakwera Government has already invited independent investigation team who have already started work.

According to Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu  a delegation of three German aviation experts who arrived in Malawi on Sunday to begin investigating the circumstances leading to the crash of a military plane that killed Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others on June 10 , are already on the ground.

Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu said experts have, so far, held an inception meeting with government representatives from the Office of the President and Cabinet, MDF, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and ministries of Foreign Affairs and Transport and Public Works.

“This is an independent team of investigators. They will work independently from the government. The president has assured them that there will be no hindrance to their work. They will have access to the site, people, institutions and anything they will see necessary in their investigations,” Kunkuyu said.

He said that since the military plane was made in Germany, “the delegation was best placed to establish what exactly led to the crash.”

Since the crash, there have been mounting calls from a diverse section of Malawi’s society for an independent investigation “whose findings would satisfy people’s curiosity for truth.”

“As the government, we would like these experts to help us establish the actual cause of this plane crash that claimed the lives of our sons and daughters, who included the country’s sitting vice president. We will provide these experts with support so that the truth can come out,” said Kunkuyu.

The country’s quasi-religious organization the Public Affairs Committee (PAC) has cautioned the government against interfering in the probe, saying that “would likely compromise and defeat the whole purpose of the investigation, which is to establish the truth.”

PAC spokesperson Rev. Gilford Matonga said  that the outcome of the investigation would be a “make or break” moment for the country.

“The government must let these experts do their work without any interference so that the outcome of the investigation can be trusted by all Malawians. The death of the country’s vice president has divided people. There is therefore the need for the government to let people know the truth about what really happened without any form of interference,” Matonga said.

According to Kunkuyu, the US and Britain are also willing to send some experts to join in the investigation.
