The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has mandated parliamentary re-elections in four constituencies where the electoral process was compromised by candidate deaths, legal disputes, and procedural violations.

MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, speaking from the National Tally Centre at BICC on Monday, confirmed the Commission’s resolve to uphold electoral integrity and announced a target of Tuesday, September 30, to finalize the announcement of all parliamentary results.

The constituencies requiring a fresh poll are Blantyre West, Nkhotakota Liwaladzi, Dedza Mtakataka, and Lilongwe Mtandire-Mtsiriza.

In Blantyre West, the election was suspended due to the tragic death of MCP candidate Michael Isaac Chisala. The elections in Nkhotakota Liwaladzi and Dedza Mtakataka were paused after separate court petitions were filed by candidates Daniel Binda and Dr. Charles Sandramu, respectively, challenging MEC’s initial rejection of their nomination papers.

A significant procedural breach led to the nullification of results in Lilongwe Mtandire-Mtsiriza. Justice Mtalimanja explained that invalid votes were opened at the district council, contravening strict MEC protocols.

“All invalid votes must be processed through a proper procedure. In this case, they were opened at the district council, which violates our rules. Consequently, the Commission has resolved to conduct a fresh election in the constituency,” the Chairperson affirmed.

BLANTYRE – Tension and panic gripped the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) offices in Blantyre on Monday following a dramatic invasion by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Regional Governor for the South, Mr. Mchacha, who was reportedly searching for a specific investigator.

According to eyewitness accounts, Mr. Mchacha arrived at the premises and demanded to see the officer. He was escorted by a receptionist to the investigators’ office, but the official in question was not present.

This prompted an angry outburst from the Governor, who accused the staff of hiding the officer. “I will deal with him! I will come again to show you the new Director General!” he was heard shouting, sending the office into chaos.

The incident caused widespread panic among employees. Witnesses described scenes of confusion as staff members fled their desks, with some rushing into restrooms to avoid the confrontation. In the commotion, some female staff members were reported to have mistakenly entered the men’s toilets.

A senior officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to fear of reprisals, confirmed the event and stated that Mr. Mchacha has threatened to return. “The Regional Governor has promised to come again and sort the officer once he is in office,” the source revealed.

This confrontation occurs against the backdrop of Mr. Mchacha’s own legal troubles, having previously been arrested on charges of being in possession of property suspected to have been obtained through corrupt practices.

The Muslim Students Association (MSA) at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) has been challenged to use their education to create meaningful change in society.

This comes after the association hosted a farewell event at Hapuwani Lodge in Mulanje, a celebration marking the transition of graduating students into the next phase of their careers.

Speaking at the event, graduate Mustaf M’madi expressed optimism about the future, saying their education has prepared them to make a real difference.

“The world should expect great things from us. We are ready to apply the knowledge we have gained to create solutions that will benefit our communities and beyond,” he said.

M’madi reflected on his academic journey, describing it as a challenging but rewarding experience.

“Balancing financial struggles with academic commitments was tough, but it taught me discipline, resilience, and adaptability,” he added.

Fatima Chilungo, a warehouse supervisor at CFAO Mobility Malawi, urged the students to demonstrate excellence and integrity as they enter the job market.

“The world is watching. Work hard, showcase your capabilities, and be role models. Success is not only about professional growth but also about spiritual and moral development,” Chilungo said.

She further encouraged the graduates to maintain a strong spiritual foundation, emphasizing the importance of prayer, acts of charity and good character.

On his part, Sheikh Ismail Ntewa highlighted the importance of using Malawi’s current political and economic landscape to drive positive transformation.

The farewell was not just a send-off but also a platform to inspire the next group of students at MUBAS to aim higher and remain committed to both academic and spiritual excellence.

The event concluded with prayers and a call for unity among students as they take on leadership roles in different spheres of life.
