Japhar Time to release inspiring poetry film Mchipululu

By Rahim Abdul

Renowned Malawian poet Japhar Time has announced that he is set to release his latest poetry film titled Mchipululu on October 5,2025.

According to him, this project has taken a lot of dedication and hard work, making it one of his most meaningful creations. He described the film as a milestone in his artistic journey and a reflection of his passion for using poetry as a tool to inspire and uplift society.

Mchipululu tells the story of a man who has suffered from a long term illness but continues to hold on to faith in his Creator.

Despite enduring pain and constant challenges, the character never loses sight of hope and continues to give thanks to God with the belief that one day he will recover. The film is built on the message of endurance, hope, and the power of unwavering belief in divine healing.

Through the narrative, Japhar Time highlights how many people tend to lose hope and drift away from God when faced with hardship. Mchipululu serves as a metaphor for the struggles of life, showing how faith and resilience can guide people through their darkest times.

The film not only portrays the reality of suffering but also emphasizes the spiritual strength needed to overcome it.

Speaking to 247 Malawi News, Japhar Time explained that the central message of his poetry is to remind people that even when one is battling sickness, healing is possible through prayer and steadfast faith in Allah.

He further stated that although some may advise turning to traditional healers for solutions, true believers must remain firm in their conviction that ultimate healing comes only from God.

The poet further revealed that Mchipululu is not the end of his creative journey but rather the beginning of bigger projects he is planning for the future. He said he has a number of other works in the pipeline, which he believes will continue to spread meaningful messages to communities across Malawi and beyond. He also hinted at collaborations with other artists to expand the impact of his craft.

In addition, Japhar Time expressed confidence that Mchipululu has the potential to compete for international awards due to its powerful theme and artistic presentation. He stressed that his goal is not merely to gain recognition but to use poetry as a platform to rebuild lives and restore hope in people who may have lost it. For him, poetry remains a spiritual calling and a service to humanity, not just an art form.

UNIMA students protest K200,000 Teaching Practice fee in Zomba

Students at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) in Zomba have taken to the streets today to demonstrate against the recently introduced K200,000 fee for teaching practice.

Reports indicate that the students consider the newly imposed charge unreasonable, especially when combined with the controversial introduction of a Semester Nine.

The proposed fees have sparked anger and concern among the student body, with many arguing that the added financial burden is unfair in Malawi’s current economic climate.

According to sources, UNIMA Student Council President Innocent Mwangende Chisi assured students that discussions with the university administration had been held and that a positive outcome was expected.

Despite this assurance, students insist that only an official written communication from the university principal will convince them of any resolution.

The demand for formal confirmation reflects deep mistrust among students, who feel previous promises made by authorities have not always been honored.

Protesters argue that higher education should be accessible and affordable, warning that the new fees could push many students out of the system and further widen inequalities.

The demonstration underscores growing tensions between the student community and the university administration over fees, transparency, and communication.

As the protest continues, pressure is mounting on UNIMA leadership to respond decisively and address student grievances before the situation escalates further.

*Background: Teaching Practice and the semester nine debate*

At UNIMA, teaching practice is a mandatory component of training for education students, designed to provide hands-on classroom experience in secondary schools across the country.

Traditionally, teaching practice has been funded largely by the university, with minimal costs falling on students, since it forms part of their academic requirement rather than an optional program.

However, the introduction of the K200,000 fee marks a major shift in policy, effectively transferring the financial responsibility to students themselves.

This policy change comes at a time when many students are already struggling with tuition fees, accommodation, and basic living costs, making the new fee particularly contentious.

Compounding the frustration is the introduction of a so-called “Semester Nine,” an additional semester beyond the usual academic cycle that students are required to complete.

Critics argue that Semester Nine lengthens the duration of study unnecessarily and increases financial strain, as students must pay for extra fees, accommodation, and upkeep during that period.

The combination of Semester Nine and the new teaching practice fee has fueled accusations that the university is commercializing education at the expense of poor and hardworking students.

For many, the ongoing protests represent not just opposition to the K200,000 fee, but also a larger struggle over the direction of higher education policy in Malawi.

Police in Lilongwe have arrested Norman Kambanje, 30, for having sexual intercourse with a girl, 17, on the pretext of fulfilling a witch doctor’s advice purportedly aimed at recovering a stolen cellphone on September 14, 2025.

On the said day, at around 10:00 hours, the victim left Area 25 on instructions from her mother in Thyolo, who told her to meet the suspect in Area 36 to collect on her behalf, a cellphone that was stolen in the district, but was reported recovered in Lilongwe by a witch doctor.

Upon meeting at Mwenyekondo, the suspect gave the victim herbals to chew as the first ritual to recover the cellphone.
He then advised the girl to be cooperative while threatening that she would die if she refused any further demands the suspect was to make.

Then the suspect took the victim to a certain resthouse where he defiled her multiple times as demanded, purportedly by the witch doctor, again as part of rituals to recover her mother’s missing cellphone.

The suspect released the girl the next morning without the cellphone.
He claimed that it failed because they did not fulfill the rituals, saying the six sexual rounds they did fell short of the recommended number purportedly advised by the witch doctor, which was ten rounds.

Upon her release, the girl revealed what she had gone through to her family, who later reported the same to the police.

The victim was referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital for a medical examination where defilement was confirmed.

A few days later, before his arrest, the suspect kept on making phone calls, inviting the victim to Area 36 for a similar experience while issuing more death threats.

Investigations show that the suspect, personally knew the family back in Thyolo, and he was aware that the girl was in Lilongwe for her school holidays.
He took advantage of the situation to play his witch-doctor tricks on the victim’s mother so that he could gain access to the girl to fulfill his criminal desires on the girl.

Kabanje will appear in court soon to answer a case of Having Sexual Intercourse with a Child.

He hails from Ndazadala Village, Traditional Authority Nsabwe in Thyolo District.
