USA Govt supports Malawi with $7 million for food assistance, humanitarian aid

The United States of America (USA) Government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has given Malawi Government $7 million (about K12 billion)  in response to food insecurity and other humanitarian needs as a result of El Nino.

USAID Malawi Mission director Pamela Fessenden made the announcement at a press briefing in Blantyre on Tuesday.

Fessenden said USAID has partnered with the World Food Programme (WFP) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

“This means two million households [nine million people] announced by the Government of Malawi, who have lost their crops due to the El Nino-induced drought during the 2023/24 agriculture season, will receive assistance,” she said.

On his part, the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) deputy director responsible for disaster preparedness Fedson Chikuse said the donation will reduce the amount needed to mitigate the impact of El Nino.

Chikuse said that out of a $446 million budget, they have managed to so far source $14 million with well-wishers pledging $64 million.

FAO introduces AMR to beat zoonotic diseases

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations has introduced an Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) initiative to enhance animal health and one health capacities, aiming to mitigate zoonotic diseases and AMR risks and threats in Malawi.

Speaking at a three-day workshop in Lilongwe, FAO’s Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) acting team leader for Malawi Sabenzi Wakesa Nabalayo emphasised that the initial strategy will play a critical role in safeguarding animal, environmental, and public health by establishing surveillance mechanisms for Antimicrobial Use (AMU) and AMR in poultry.

Nabalayo said the initiative will also provide valuable data to inform decision-making regarding AMU in animal health.

“The AMR landscape is constantly evolving as the 2022 end date for the initial strategy elapsed, and it’s crucial to assess its effectiveness and plan for the future,” she said.

Nabalayo added that the collaborative discussions will help achieve a revised comprehensive AMR surveillance strategy for animal health and standardize the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for data collection and analysis.

Meanwhile, Global Health Security Advisor Dr. Charles Oliver said they will ensure Malawi follows all SOPs to prevent drug resistance from occurring.

Chilima leads mourners at late Mvalo’s funeral

Mother to businessperson Frank Mvalo and in-law to Justice Minister Titus Mvalo, Agnes Grace Mvalo, has been laid to rest in Traditional Authority Mabilabo’s Emanyaleni Village in Mzimba at a ceremony attended by Vice President Saulos Chilima.

In his eulogy, Inkosi Mabilabo described the deceased as a mother and pillar for many people within and beyond her home village.

“We have lost not just a woman but a mother and pillar that anchored this village and beyond,” he said.

Family representative Peter Mvalo also described the late Mvalo as a loving and hard working mother.

“Her departure is a great loss to the family. Her death is a shock to us,” he said.

He said Mvalo got sick while in South Africa where she had gone to cheer her sick sister.

He expressed gratitude to the Malawian High Commissioner in South Africa for assisting the family with arrangements to repatriate the body to Malawi.

The late Agnes Grace Mvalo, who worked as a secretary and a teacher before joining NBS Bank, was born in 1946 and died Tuesday last week aged 78.

A dedicated member of the Anglican Church, she is survived by two children and eight grandchildren.

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has received letters of credence today from Mozambican Ambassador, Alexandre Herculano Manjate at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

In an interview following the presentation, Ambassador Manjate expressed his eagerness to build a strong partnership between Malawi and Mozambique, focusing on increasing trade, transportation, and energy through the Malawi-Mozambique Electricity Interconnection

He emphasized that the partnership will create opportunities for both countries to enhance integrated business between their communities.

In his remarks, Presidential Spokesperson Anthony Kasunda reaffirmed President Chakwera’s commitment to strengthening relations with the Government of Mozambique.

He highlighted the symbiotic relationship between Malawi and Mozambique, particularly in trade and transportation, as well the agriculture sector, where he noted that Malawi’s fertilizer is transported through Mozambican ports.

Land Information Management System to enhance transparency and accountability in land administration- Gumba

Minister of Lands, Deus Gumba, has emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Ministry of Lands and the Malawi Police Service in implementing new land laws and the Land Information Management System (LIMS).

Gumba made the remarks today during a sensitization meeting for Central East Region Police Officers on the amended land laws and LIMS held at Linde Motel in Mponera, Dowa.

In his address, Gumba said police play a crucial role in ensuring the implementation of government policies and laws by maintaining peace and order.

He stressed on the need to orient officers on the new amendments and the introduction of the digital land management platform,  stating that the initiative will help in the implementation of the laws and the LIMS.

The Minister said his Ministry will continue to engage police officers, as they are key stakeholders in the implementation exercise, particularly in the enforcement aspect.

Gumba also stated that the Land Information Management System is expected to enhance transparency and accountability in land administration by digitizing all data for easy access; noting that it aligns with the Land Reform Rollout Programme taking shape in the country.

Speaking earlier, Secretary for Lands in the Ministry of Lands,  Devie Chilonga, emphasized the significance of the engagement, which will provide an opportunity for the Ministry of Lands to update the police on the implementation of 2016 land laws and their amendments in 2022, as well as the Land Information Management System (LIMS) developed in line with the country’s Land Reform agenda.

In her remarks, Commissioner of Police for the Central East Region, Rhoda Manjolo said as police, they are committed to ensuring that land-related matters are handled by the law.
