The Maseko Ngoni Heritage Trust has congratulated Jane Ansah for being elected as Vice President of Malawi during the September 16 general elections.

Ansah contested as the running mate to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Peter Mutharika, who emerged victorious in the polls with 3,039,249 votes.

In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Impi Kandi Padambo Ndau, the Trust expressed pride in Ansah’s achievement and described her election as a moment of honor for both the nation and the Ngoni heritage.

Ansah

The Trust noted that Ansah’s victory was not just a political milestone but also a cultural inspiration, particularly for women and young people across Malawi.

On behalf of Paramount Chief Gomani, the Trust extended its goodwill to President-elect Peter Mutharika, thanking him for selecting Ansah as his running mate.

The statement further commended Mutharika for recognizing Ansah’s leadership qualities and entrusting her with the responsibility of serving as the country’s second-in-command.

According to the Trust, Ansah’s elevation reflects the growing role of women in leadership and sets an important precedent for future generations.

Historically, the Maseko Ngoni have played a significant role in Malawi’s political and cultural landscape. Descendants of Ngoni warriors who migrated to present-day Malawi in the 19th century, they are known for their strong community structures, commitment to justice, and promotion of civic engagement.

The Ngoni have long used their traditional authority to influence political decisions and support governance initiatives that reflect their values of unity, resilience, and accountability. Their endorsement of leaders like Ansah and Mutharika carries weight not only culturally but also in shaping public opinion in central and southern Malawi.

*Ngoni Heritage and Electoral Influence*

Over the years, the Ngoni have been a decisive political force in several elections, often guiding communities on civic participation and leadership choices. Paramount Chiefs and community elders historically issued guidance to villagers on governance matters, blending traditional wisdom with contemporary political considerations.

During key elections, Ngoni leaders have mobilized communities to vote conscientiously, emphasizing integrity, development, and the protection of cultural and community interests. Their influence extends beyond advisory roles, as they have often mediated disputes, encouraged civic participation, and fostered unity among diverse political factions within their territories.

Political analysts note that the backing of Ngoni heritage institutions can sway local and regional outcomes, as voters in central and southern Malawi often respect the counsel of their traditional authorities. The alignment of the Maseko Ngoni Heritage Trust with the DPP ticket highlights the continued intertwining of culture and politics, demonstrating that electoral decisions are not purely partisan but also culturally informed.

The congratulatory message underscored the unity between tradition and modern governance, showing how cultural institutions continue to celebrate and support national achievements.

By extending its blessings to both Mutharika and Ansah, the Trust reaffirmed its commitment to fostering harmony, development, and inclusive leadership in Malawi.

The Trust concluded by wishing the new administration success in steering the country toward peace, prosperity, and stability in the years ahead, emphasizing the importance of leaders who respect both the democratic process and the country’s rich cultural heritage.

Veteran Journalist Nassah Cautions New Government Against “Revenge Mentality”

By Wadza Botomani

Prominent veteran journalist and social commentator Idriss Nassah has issued a stark warning to the newly empowered Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), urging its members to abandon a “revenge mentality” and focus instead on the urgent task of national recovery.

In a widely circulated Facebook post, Nassah expressed deep concern over the rhetoric emanating from some DPP operatives just three days after the party’s electoral victory.

“I worry,” Nassah began his post. “Hearing what DPP operatives are saying—some of whom have expectations to hold public offices—they seem driven by a quest for vengeance.”

He described their language as carrying a “sublinal, yet ominous threat,” paraphrasing it as: “You, so and so, did this to us when we were in opposition, you better watch out now…”

Nassah characterized this attitude as a predictable but dangerous reaction from people who have suddenly acquired power after a period without it. “They go bananas,” he wrote, drawing a parallel to a harsh school environment. “But never again do we want this country to be run like a mission school by a headmaster who believes in corporal punishment as the instrument to enforce discipline and his personal power.”

Nassah

The journalist noted that the “anger pervading the loudmouths of the DPP” is already stoking public fear about what lies ahead. He called for an immediate shift in focus from political retribution to governance.

“DPP leaders and supporters have to quickly transition from the revenge mentality to taking care of the business at hand,” Nassah stated. “Malawians voted to move this country forward with purpose and a vision for prosperity.”

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Nassah pointed out that the DPP has inherited a struggling economy. He argued that the new administration’s legitimacy will hinge entirely on its ability to deliver tangible results.

“The people are looking at whether the party and its administration are capable of reversing the damage done to the economy and get this country working again,” he wrote. “If that doesn’t happen, the people will quickly become restless. And it won’t end well.”

Nassar prescribed a clear path for the government to win public trust: demonstrate a relentless work ethic from day one, fulfill campaign promises to cut wasteful spending and reduce corruption, and focus on putting Malawi back on track.

“That is how to win hearts and minds. Not by vengeful bloodletting,” he concluded.

The commentary ended with a pointed reminder of the fleeting nature of political goodwill, warning the DPP that it cannot afford to gamble with public optimism. “Ask the once mightily pompous MCP,” Nassah wrote, invoking the fall of the former ruling party as a cautionary tale.
