By Staff Reporter

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has said  government will continue developing the country through infrastructure projects to ease  transportation of goods for farmers and create a conducive business environment.

Speaking Wednesday, during a whistle whistle-stop tour at Ntchisi Boma, President Chakwera said natural disasters are hindering entrepreneurship as well as farming in the district as farmers’ harvests continue to decrease leaving them with little to rely on.

President Chakwera

“I know people in Ntchisi are hardworking and very committed to work but famine occurred due to El Niño weather. So government will help you either through irrigation farming or rain-fed Agriculture.

I have already communicated to the Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Minister of Finance, Gender and Minister of Agriculture. They are doing all the needful like Social Cash Transfer as well as Affordable Input fertilizer,” Chakwera said.

Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda stated that government is doing various interventions to make sure that people are benefiting from government programmes.

He condemned officers who put names of the same people in various government interventions saying others also need to benefit from government programmes.

Senior Chief Malenga hailed the government for various development projects that are taking place in Ntchisi district.

Malawi’s Fuel Crisis Hits Minibus Owners, Sparks Calls for Government Intervention

By Burnett Munthali

The Minibus Owners Association of Malawi (MOAM) has voiced serious concerns over the ongoing fuel crisis, which has left their businesses struggling as the black market inflates fuel prices to K8,000 per liter. MOAM President Coxley Kamange shared with Zodiak Online that the crisis has affected not only Malawi’s economy but also the ability of minibus owners to maintain their operations, pay employees, and cover essential costs like spare parts.

“The challenges we face are crippling. It’s becoming difficult for our members to keep their vehicles on the road, let alone sustain their businesses,” Kamange said. He urged the government to take decisive action, focusing on stabilizing fuel availability instead of simply blaming the black market or issuing press releases.

The energy authorities, who recently pointed to forex scarcity as the root cause of the fuel shortage, were unavailable for immediate comment.

Social commentator Caesar Kondowe has echoed MOAM’s concerns, noting that the crisis impacts all Malawians, especially as the scarcity of fuel contributes to price hikes across essential goods, pushing inflation even higher. “The common Malawian is now feeling the pinch,” Kondowe remarked, highlighting the broad economic strain on citizens who already face a high cost of living.

With fuel scarcity worsening, the pressure mounts on government authorities to provide concrete solutions to restore normalcy in Malawi’s transport and goods supply sectors.

Principal Secretary for Economic Planning and Development in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs Jacob Mazalale, has emphasized the crucial role of the social protection sector in supporting the poorest and most vulnerable populations in the country.

Speaking at the 2024 social protection week conference at Mount Soche hotel in Blantyre on Wednesday, Mazalale acknowledged that the poorest are often excluded from economic activities due to their circumstances, and it is essential to provide them with support to improve their welfare and enable their participation in economic activities.

Jacob Mazalale

However, he noted that there are challenges in financing social protection activities, particularly in ensuring sustainability.

He mentioned that the government is exploring innovative ways to secure resources and is in constant conversation with potential supporters

Mazalale also discussed the Unified Beneficiary Registry (UBR), a tool used to identify eligible beneficiaries for social protection interventions.

He highlighted that the UBR contains vital information on individuals and households and is essential for targeting support effectively.

“Nevertheless, there are challenges in updating the UBR, and efforts are being made to address these issues,” said Mazalale.

He then stressed the importance of social protection in supporting the most vulnerable populations and the need for sustainable financing and effective tools like the UBR to ensure that support reaches those who need it most.

On her part, chair of the social protection group,Susanne Meltl, said social protection programs in Malawi have made immense progress, benefiting not only the direct beneficiaries but also the communities and the nation as a whole.

She said :”These programs are crucial drivers of economic growth and socioeconomic stability, promoting female empowerment and a more equitable future. The government of Malawi has made significant progress in developing a coherent set of social protection programs, with the Ministry of Finance as the policy holder.

“Development partners are supportive of the new strategy and its implementation, which addresses various vulnerabilities throughout the life cycle.

“While progress has been made, there is still a need for more adaptive and shock-responsive social protection policies to address the different vulnerabilities within the life cycle.

“The Malawi National Social Support Programme II (MNSSP II) is one such initiative, running from 2018 to 2023, which aims to strengthen social protection for the most vulnerable populations.

“Overall, social protection programs in Malawi have shown immense progress, and their importance cannot be overstated.

“As the nation moves forward, it is essential to continue supporting and strengthening these programs to ensure a more equitable and just society for all.”
