Mtumbuka announces bid for UTM presidency

Engineer Dr. Matthew Mtumbuka has declared his intention to contest for the presidency of the United Transformation Movement (UTM) at the party’s upcoming convention, scheduled for November this year.

Addressing a press conference at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, Mtumbuka outlined his vision for transforming Malawi into a prosperous nation.

“I am committed to ensuring that our country has access to quality healthcare services, food security, and that our natural resources, including agriculture and mining, benefit all Malawians,” said Mtumbuka.

He also pledged to reduce taxes and stimulate economic growth, creating employment opportunities for the youth.

Mtumbuka further promised to carry on the legacy of the former Vice President and party leader, Saulos Chilima, who tragically passed away in a plane crash in the Chikangawa Forest in Mzimba on 10 June 2024.

He described the late Chilima as the best president the country could have ever had.

President Chakwera impressed with the construction of Kandeu Secondary School project

Malawi leader president Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, on Tuesday visited construction of Kandeu Secondary School project in the area of  Traditional Authority Kasisi, Chikwawa.

He was accompanied by the First Lady, Madame Monica Chakwera

The school project is being built under the Secondary Education Expansion for Development Project, sponsored by the United States Government.

President Chakwera is in Lowershire for the second day, undertaking various development tours. He has shown remarkable love, zeal, passion, and dedication to the people of Lowershire.

After visiting Kandeu Community Day Secondary School, the President is expected to tour Majete Wildlife Reserve at Senior Chief Kasisi in Chikwawa. He will also inspect the construction of the Water Treatment Plant for the Shire Valley Transformation Project and switch on power at MAREP 9 at Pende Primary School, both in Senior Chief Kasisi, Chikwawa.

The President will conclude his tour of duty with a visit to Mkumaniza Community Day Secondary School in Senior Chief Ngabu’s area, Chikwawa.

APL injects K30 million into ICAM conference

Automotive Products Limited (APL) has generously donated K30 million to support the upcoming Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (ICAM) Annual Conference, slated for September 19-21 in Mangochi.

Speaking during a cheque presentation on Tuesday,APL Board Chairperson Lowani Mukhondia emphasized the significance of ICAM’s role in the business sector, citing their long-standing partnership.

“ICAM’s members are the decision-makers in offices, responsible for procurement decisions and budgets. We’re eager to engage with them at the conference,” he said.

ICAM Chief Executive Officer(CEO) Noel Zigowa expressed gratitude for APL’s substantial support, highlighting the conference’s relevance amidst Malawi’s economic uncertainties.

“APL’s resilience in these challenging times is truly inspiring. Their contribution will significantly enhance our conference,” said Zigowa.

The conference, themed “Navigating Economic Uncertainties: Strategies for Growth and Resilience,” promises to be a pivotal event for the business community.

Malawi leader Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, on Tuesday, toured Shire Valley Transformation Project, located in Senior Chief Kasisi’s area, Chikwawa.

The president visited the project to appreciate its progress and challenges. He was accompanied by the First Lady, Madame Monica Chakwera, cabinet ministers, party officials, and members of the general public.

The Shire Valley Transformation project is one of Malawi’s flagship projects, aimed at increasing agricultural productivity and commercialization for targeted households in the Shire Valley.

Once completed, the project will help improve the sustainable management and utilization of natural resources.

Chakwera touts Majete Wildlife Reserve beackon of ATM strategy

Malawi Leader President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Tuesday toured Majete Wildlife Reserve, which is located in the area of Senior Chief Kasisi in Chikwawa.

President Chakwera, accompanied by the First Lady, Madame Monica Chakwera, called on Malawians to visit tourism destination centres in large numbers, under the banner “Tiziyamba ndife a Malawi”.

The president touted tourism as a key component in achieving the ATM strategy.

He emphasized that one can not talk about tourism without visiting Majete Wildlife Reserve.

Majete Wildlife Reserve is a natural reserve, established as a protected area in 1955.

Since 2003, African Parks has managed Majete under a public-private partnership with the Malawi Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW)

Since then, wildlife has been restored, the park has achieved big five game status, and tourism has increased.
