The Ballon d’Or is an annual football award presented by French magazine France Football since 1956 to honour the player deemed to have performed the best over the previous season.

Conceived by sports writers Gabriel Hanot and Jacques Ferran, the Ballon d’Or was based exclusively on voting by football journalists up until 2006.

Originally, it was awarded only to players from Europe and was widely known as the European Footballer of the Year award. In 1995, the Ballon d’Or was expanded to include all players of any origin that have been active at European clubs.

The award became a global prize in 2007 with all professional footballers from around the world being eligible; additionally, coaches and captains of national teams were also given the right to vote, before reverting to just journalists in 2016.

Between 2010 and 2015, in an agreement with FIFA, the award was temporarily merged with the FIFA World Player of the Year, and was known as the FIFA Ballon d’Or.

That partnership ended in 2016, and the award reverted to the Ballon d’Or, while FIFA also reverted to its own separate annual award, The Best FIFA Men’s Player.

In 2022, France Football modified the rules for the Ballon d’Or. The timing was changed so that awards were given not for achievements during a calendar year, but for a football season, and it was also determined that only a single journalist from each country in the top 100 of the FIFA Men’s World Ranking would be allowed to vote.

UEFA co-organizes the Ballon d’Or gala since 2024, with France Football retaining the voting system and the Ballon d’Or name.

Lionel Messi won the award a record eight times, and he is also the current holder of the Ballon d’Or, having won its most recent edition in 2023.

Cristiano Ronaldo won it five times and amassed a record eighteen nominations in his career.

Michel Platini, Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten each won the award three times, while Franz Beckenbauer, Ronaldo, Alfredo Di Stéfano, Kevin Keegan and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge have each won it twice.

First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera has hailed Luthando Holdings for donating two Yamaha YBR 125, EG Series motorcycles to Shaping Our Future Foundation (SOFF).

The motorcycles are valued at K19 million and they come with a two-year warranty as well as free servicing.

Appreciating the gesture through her Facebook page, Madam Chakwera said the motorcycles have come at the right time when her organization is working tirelessly in the rural areas where mobility is a notable challenge.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Mr. Hendrix Laher, the Managing Director of Luthando Holdings, and his entire team for this thoughtful and timely contribution to my organization,” says the first lady.

At Shaping Our Future Foundation, says Madam Chakwera, the organization is deeply committed to empowering women and girls across Malawi, through education, economic empowerment and health related initiatives.

“Much of SOFF work is in the rural areas and depends heavily on the ability of our field officers. These motorcycles will significantly enhance the mobility of our team, allowing them to navigate challenging terrains to deliver much needed support, guidance and resources,” she added.

“As SOFF board chairperson, I am grateful of the partnerships we are building with different companies within the private sector. Luthando Holdings’ understanding of the importance of community support and corporate social responsibility is truly commendable. Together, we are making meaningful progress in shaping a brighter future for Malawi women and girls.”

The Magistrates and Judges Association of Malawi (MAJAM) has summoned lawyer Alexious Kamangila for discussions tomorrow, following a series of allegations he has been posting on his Facebook page against Justice Ken Manda. Kamangila has been making these claims since October 2, despite being warned to stop.

Justice Manda, through his lawyer Michael Goba Chipeta, has already issued a letter demanding that Kamangila cease his public accusations and issue a formal apology, along with a compensation of K250 million for defamation. Kamangila has accused Justice Manda of being corrupt and engaging in unethical practices, claiming that there are numerous complaints about Manda’s rulings, which he alleges are being protected by senior judicial officials.

Chipeta’s letter to Kamangila directed him to not only stop posting defamatory statements but also to apologize publicly via the same Facebook platform and pay the K250 million in damages within three days.

However, Kamangila has defied the warning, continuing his accusations both on Facebook and on his WhatsApp platform. This escalation has prompted MAJAM to take action, stating that they are concerned about the situation and feel it necessary to engage with Kamangila in a roundtable discussion to seek a resolution to the matter.

Kamangila has confirmed that he has received the letter summoning him to the discussions. The meeting is set to take place tomorrow, and it is expected to address the allegations raised by Kamangila against Justice Manda.

This case has attracted widespread attention as it touches on important issues related to judicial integrity, legal ethics, and the freedom of speech in the digital age.

DPP faces cyberattack on official facebook page Ahead of 2025 elections

By Burnett Munthali

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has issued an urgent statement following a cyberattack on its official Facebook page, which took place on the night of Tuesday, 8 October 2024. The party’s Democratic Progressive Party Malawi page was reportedly tampered with by what the DPP has described as “enemies of democracy,” causing significant disruptions in its ability to communicate with the public.

In the statement released by the DPP Media Desk, the party reassured supporters that their technical team is working diligently to restore the page. “Our technicians are currently working tirelessly to restore the page,” the statement read, while also indicating that alternative communication channels will be utilized to keep the public and party members updated during the restoration process.

The hacking incident comes at a particularly critical time for the DPP as the party prepares for the 2025 general elections. This attack has sparked concerns within the party and among political observers, many of whom view it as a calculated attempt to destabilize the DPP’s efforts to effectively communicate its campaign messages and policies to voters. As Malawi approaches the elections, the digital space has become an increasingly significant battleground for political actors, making such attacks especially concerning.

The DPP’s Facebook page has long been a vital platform for engaging supporters, promoting events, and sharing key party information. The tampering threatens to disrupt these functions, but the party remains confident that the issue will be resolved in the near future.

In recent years, cybersecurity has become a pressing concern in Malawi’s political landscape. Similar attacks on political parties, civil society organizations, and government institutions have highlighted the growing need for stronger digital protections. These incidents expose the vulnerabilities of online platforms and underscore the importance of secure and resilient digital systems in safeguarding Malawi’s political processes.

Although the DPP has not provided detailed information on the extent of the tampering, the language used in the party’s statement suggests that the attack is seen as politically motivated. By referring to the hackers as “enemies of democracy,” the DPP implied that the breach may be part of a broader strategy aimed at undermining the party’s operations and influence during this crucial period.

The party has urged its supporters to remain patient and vigilant as the technical team works to regain full control of the page. In the meantime, the DPP will continue to engage with its followers through alternative platforms to ensure that its messages reach the public without delay.

As the 2025 elections draw closer, this incident serves as a reminder of the growing importance of cybersecurity in modern political campaigns. Political parties in Malawi will need to prioritize the protection of their online platforms to ensure transparency and prevent any interference with the country’s democratic processes.
