Radio Maria journalist Luka Chimwaza now Blantyre Press Club President

Radio Maria journalist Luka Chimwaza is now the new President of the Blantyre Press Club(BPC) following his election on Saturday November 18,2023.

Chimwaza was elected unopposed at the press club’s Elective General Meeting held at Hapuwani Lodge in Mulanje District.

He takes over from Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) journalist Blessings Kanache, who served in the position for two terms.

On other hand, George Banda defeated Salim Martin to reclaim the Vice Presidency position.

Sellina Siphat was elected General Secretary(GS) and Ellen Kabisa elected as Vice.

Christopher Sande of Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) was elected the Treasurer while Hastings Jimani, Martin Gela, Yusus Daisa and Comfort Bulangete were elected Executive Members.

In his acceptance speech, Chimwaza said he will try to be as more innovative as possible to make the organization more exciting and successful.

“I will sustain and continue with works that my predecessor started,” said Chimwaza.

On his part, outgoing president Blessings Kanache who served the position since 2016 cited media trainings and professionalism growth as some successes he initiated during his reign.

“I want to urge you the incoming leaders that you will face a lot of challenges on your way but endure. Things will work out”, said Kanache.

In his remarks, Information Minister, Moses Kunkuyu, who was guest of honour, commended the country’s media for promoting good governce and rule of law as well as shaping leaders.

The elections were overseen by Phillip Banda and Steven Golden from the Malawi Electoral Commission and the district council registry, respectively.

Established in 2014, Blantyre Press Club serves as a crucial platform for journalistic endeavors.
