Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor to Engage Malawi Diaspora This Saturday

By Wadza Botomani

Dr. McDonald Mwale, Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM), will hold an online engagement with Malawians living in the diaspora this Saturday, 16th August 2025.The virtual event aims to foster dialogue and exchange ideas on how the

central bank’s policies can better serve the diaspora community while contributing to Malawi’s economic growth.

The initiative underscores RBM’s commitment to leveraging diaspora expertise and remittances, which have become a critical source of foreign exchange. Recent data shows diaspora remittances surged from K1.4 billion ($2 million) monthly to over K12.1 billion ($17 million) since the implementation of the Malawi Diaspora Engagement Policy, highlighting the community’s growing role in national development .

Governor Mwale’s engagement follows heated debates among diaspora think tanks, who have criticized Malawi’s high inflation (27.1% as of June 2025) and forex shortages, urging stronger monetary policies . The event also aligns with broader government efforts to tap into diaspora skills and investments.

Malawians abroad are encouraged to participate in the virtual forum, which seeks to transform critiques into actionable insights for the country’s economic recovery.
