American-based Malawian social media influencer Jolly Bro, popularly known as JB, has sharply criticized Malawi’s opposition leaders for failing to support activist Sylvester Namiwa and other civil society leaders during recent protests. In a live stream on his social media profile, JB accused the United Transformation Movement (UTM) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of neglecting demonstrators, leaving them vulnerable to attacks by ruling party supporters .Â
JB argued that opposition leaders, including DPP’s Kondwani Nankhumwa and former Reserve Bank Governor Dalitso Kabambe, did not physically join the protests, which he believes could have deterred violence. “If Kabambe or [former President] Peter Mutharika were on the ground with the demonstrators, Namiwa wouldn’t have been brutalized,” JB claimed.

Kabambe has received criticism from some Malawians for what is described a “publicity stunt”—visiting Namiwa with cameras after the attack instead of standing with protesters during the demonstrations .Â
The influencer also used the platform to endorse Peter Mutharika for the 2025 presidency, praising his economic record and declaring, “I will campaign for him vigorously until he wins” . JB’s remarks come amid escalating political tensions in Malawi, where opposition activists face increasing violence. His live stream has sparked mixed reactions, with some supporters applauding his boldness while others accuse him of politicizing Namiwa’s ordeal .Â
The incident highlights growing frustrations with Malawi’s opposition, which JB alleges prioritizes optics over solidarity with grassroots movements.Â
