Sulemani urges Malawi to embrace God-fearing leadership

By Rahim Abdul

Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman has called for God-fearing and courageous leadership to help Malawi address corruption, misuse of public resources and the challenges facing vulnerable citizens.

Suleman made the remarks on Saturday, October 17, 2026, during the ongoing Dawah 2026 Islamic conference in Lilongwe, where he emphasised the need for integrity, accountability and commitment to improving people’s lives.

Suleman: Let’s embrace God-fearing spirit

He expressed concern over the involvement of some leaders in corruption and the mismanagement of public resources, saying such practices undermine efforts to improve the welfare of poor communities.

Suleman cited the theft and abuse of resources, including fertiliser intended to support farmers, as examples of how corruption deprives vulnerable Malawians of opportunities to improve their livelihoods.

He said Malawi needs leaders who fear God and are willing to make difficult decisions in the national interest rather than prioritising personal gain.

The Speaker also expressed his willingness to risk his life in pursuit of meaningful change, particularly initiatives aimed at improving the living conditions of poor people across the country.

Meanwhile, Grand Mufti Muhammad Uthuman urged Muslims to remain God-fearing, uphold peace and contribute to the country’s development.

Uthuman also encouraged Muslims to work hard and shun dishonest practices, including fraud and corruption, which undermine public trust and hinder social and economic progress.

He stressed the importance of religious values in promoting honesty, discipline and responsibility in people’s daily lives.

The Dawah 2026 conference is being held under the theme ‘Islam and Global Challenges: How Can We Use Religion to Address These Challenges?’.

The gathering provides a platform for discussions on how Islamic teachings can contribute to addressing social and other challenges affecting communities. The conference
