The shifting tides of political loyalty in Malawi have produced a new messy spectacle. The internet firebrand Alberto Fernando Zacarias, widely known as Mavyete or Jolly Bro (JB), has completely flipped his script.
The once-devoted social media warrior for the then opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has turned his digital weapons directly against his former master, Peter Mutharika.
This sudden u-turn exposes the transactional core of Malawian political alignment, where loyalty is given only until a reward is denied.
During the height of his alignment with the DPP, JB acted as an aggressive online shield for the party. He routinely launched explicit attacks against President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration.
JB labelled the Chakwera government a “useless failure” that left citizens entirely hopeless.
He publicly claimed that Malawians only knew how to treat death as an achievement referring to how Chakwera’s administration handled Chilima fatal plane crash.
He continuously ridiculed the Chakwera regime economic management with vulgar phrasing, stating the leadership was completely blind to civilian suffering.
Interestingly, the DPP leadership quietly celebrated his toxic rhetoric. They viewed him as a useful tool to erode the credibility of the MCP government.
However, the allegiance to DPP has now shattered when JB’s expected rewards failed to materialize. He has now turned against DPP leader Peter Mutharika, exposing the deep dysfunction within the ruling party.
In a dramatic turn of events, JB has mockingly addressed the first lady as “His Excellency President Gertrude Mutharika” insinuating that President Peter Mutharika is mentally or physically incapacitated, leaving his wife in complete, unelected control of both party and state affairs.
Furthermore, JB has aggressively condemned the frequent, secretive, and taxpayer-funded medical or personal trips that Mutharika makes to South Africa. He labels these jaunts an unconscionable drain on a bleeding national economy.
As if that is not enough, JB fiercely called out Mutharika for snubbing the August 2026 celebratory reception for the Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers. The event took place at Mutharika’s own official residence, yet the leader failed to show his face. This scenario has accelerated suspicions of serious ill-health among president’s critics.
But, is Mavyete simply a noise maker? To project influence away from raw politics, JB has leaned heavily into targeted philanthropic actions financed primarily by his connections in the diaspora.
On 19 March 2025, through Mavyete Malawi Food Relief Initiative, JB launched a major food security drive. He raised exactly 19,950,000 Kwacha through donations from over 80 Malawian citizens living in the United States.
Then, being a philanthropist, where is Mavyete’s rage emanating from? The real catalyst for JB’s sudden change of heart is an open secret: political frustration.
Reports indicate that after spending years providing aggressive social media defense and financial support to the DPP, JB fully expected to be rewarded with a diplomatic posting to the Malawian Embassy in the United States.
When Peter Mutharika failed to hand him the diplomatic visa and the prestigious title, the activist’s loyalty instantly evaporated.
This toxic cycle highlights the structural rot of political appeasement within Malawian politics. When diplomatic posts, board chairs, and public sector jobs are used as payment for aggressive social media barking, meritocracy is completely destroyed.
Truth be told, sending online praise-singers to represent a nation abroad instead of qualified diplomats ruins the country’s foreign relations.
Mavyete is crying loud like a baby now not because President Mutharika appointed his fellow political praise singers to embassies on merit but because he has simply been left out.
Until political leaders replace transactional favouritism with genuine merit, public service will remain a playground for frustrated internet influencers who turn into enemies the moment the gravy train leaves them behind.
