The Minister of Tourism, Dr. Vera Kamtukule, has emphasized the need to celebrate the lives of Mulanje mountain porters by launching the Porters Welfare Fund.
Speaking at the Mount Mulanje Porters Race, she noted that despite UNESCO’s recognition of Mount Mulanje as a World Heritage Site, the porters’ lives haven’t improved.

Dr. Kantukule stressed that the fund will support the porters’ children, enabling them to access university education.
This initiative aims to make a positive impact on the lives of these porters who play a vital role in Malawi’s tourism industry.
The Mount Mulanje Porters Race is an annual event that showcases the endurance and skills of porters who work on the mountain. This year’s event saw impressive performances from participants.
Anthony Matias set a new record in the race, finishing in 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 36 seconds.
Doris Fitcher emerged as the top female athlete, completing the course in 2 hours and 41 minutes.
