Lilongwe Police have arrested Karosi Mulumbe, 44, a truck driver, for allegedly raping a 35-year-old woman to whom he had offered a free ride.
The incident reportedly occurred during the night after he intoxicated the victim while traveling from Mchinji to Lilongwe on July 24, 2025.
It is reported that the victim was traveling from Zambia, where she worked as a housemaid, coming back to Malawi, to her home district, Ntcheu.

Upon arrival in Mchinji, she was unable to continue her journey due to a lack of money for transportation.
As a result, she began walking from Mchinji Boma and arrived at Ludzi Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) roadblock, where she asked officers for assistance in finding a lift.
Fortunately, when the officers spoke to the suspect, who was driving a truck, about the victim’s predicament, he offered to assist her with a ride to Lilongwe at the MRA offices.
However, while on their way, the suspect gave the victim Chibuku beer, which intoxicated her and caused her to fall asleep.
While the victim was incapacitated in her deep sleep, the suspect allegedly took advantage of the situation and raped her inside the vehicle.
Upon realizing what had happened to her after waking up at the Lilongwe MRA offices, the victim reported the incident to police at Area 3.
The police referred the victim to the One Stop Centre department at Kamuzu Central Hospital for examination and treatment, where the results confirmed rape.
Mulumbe will be charged with rape, and taken to court soon.
He hails from Gwede Village, Traditional Authority Mduwa in Mchinji District.
