The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced that it has barred two candidates Gertrude Mwanyongo and Menelina Mweipinga from Leadership with Compassion Party(LCP) from standing in the forthcoming by-elections in Karonga on the basis that their party is not yet registered with the Registrar of Political Parties.

MEC Commissioner Francis Kasaila disclosed this in Karonga on Wednesday March 13,2024 during an engagement with members of the Multiparty Liaison Committee.

Kasaila added that apart from the candidates, the electoral body has also suspended thirty three (33) officers for allegedly violating electoral laws.

While indicating that the officers have been punished for registering voters using registration slips, Kasaila explained that the Commission has taken tough decisions as one way of ensuring that it delivers credible polls.

On his part, Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) District Governor for Karonga, Makenzie Malema hailed the electoral management body for being transparent in handling the electoral process.
