Uganda’s lifting storm: Muhoozi’s threats spark national outrage

By Burnett Munthali

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of President Yoweri Museveni, has triggered widespread condemnation after making a public statement threatening opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine.

The remarks, which referenced killings and named the leader of the National Unity Platform, have heightened fears around political violence and the shrinking space for opposition activity in Uganda.

Kainerugaba’s inflammatory posts on social media, threatening to behead Bobi Wine and treating him as an “outlaw” if he doesn’t surrender to police within 48 hours, have sparked international concern.

The opposition leader has alleged widespread electoral fraud and has been vocal about his concerns over the disputed presidential election.

The international community, including human rights groups, is urging restraint and respect for democratic principles.

The situation is tense, with reports of post-election violence, arbitrary arrests, and intimidation of opposition supporters.

Bobi Wine, a former pop star turned politician, has responded defiantly, stating he won’t be intimidated by the “cowardly regime”.

He has demanded that the military vacate his compound, citing concerns for his family’s safety.

Kainerugaba’s threats against opposition figures are not isolated incidents.

He has a history of making provocative statements, including threats to invade neighboring Kenya and seize the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.

His actions have sparked diplomatic tensions and raised concerns about regional stability.

The situation in Uganda is dire, with opposition leaders facing harassment, arrest, and torture.

The international community is calling for pressure to be brought to bear on the Ugandan government to respect human rights and democratic principles.
