Wesley Macheso a passionate advocate for creative writing

Wesley Macheso, Head of the Department of Literary Studies at the University of Malawi (Unima) in Zomba, is a renowned creative writer who has made a name for himself both locally and internationally.


Speaking with 247 Malawi News,Macheso shared his insights on creative writing, his journey as a writer, and the current state of creative writing in Malawi.

“Creative writing is an art that mostly emerges from talent,” Macheso said, adding that his love for writing was influenced by his environment and the stories he read as a child.

Macheso’s writing has taken him to several countries, where he has attended writing workshops and seminars, and has earned him international recognition.

As Head of the Department of Literary Studies, Macheso emphasized the importance of setting high standards for writing and the need for writers to cultivate good habits.

“A writer must go through the rigorous process of submitting their work to accredited publishers for peer review,” he advised.

Macheso also highlighted the department’s efforts to nurture creative writers, including offering courses in creative writing and plans to introduce a degree program in Literature and Creative Writing.

He encouraged writers to take advantage of digital platforms to expose their work and to write with a focus on humanity.

Macheso’s advice to aspiring writers is to write and read widely, and to be patient and meticulous in their craft.

As a role model, he continues to inspire and mentor young writers, and his contributions to Malawian literature are invaluable.
