Emulate your superiors to succeed – Chakwera advises graduating MDF senior command and staff

By Cedric Nkungula

President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has called on the newly graduated Malawi Defence Force (MDF) senior command and staff to always lead by examples of their superiors if they are to succeed in their vacation as soldiers.

Chakwera who is Malawi Defence Force Commander In – Chief made the remarks on Friday 24th November, 2023 at the graduation of MDF senior command and staff in Salima.

In his remarks, the Malawi leader emphasized that it is those who go through life and approach their work without any examples and models to anchor, challenge and ground them that often flounder, while those who have such anchors tend to flourish.

He advised the men in uniform to always lead by example of their superiors saying their leadership is the parachute that guarantees a safe landing when all other measures fail.

“If you want to succeed in your vocation as soldiers and if you wish to put your training to good use, follow closely the noble examples of those that lead you and lead those who come behind you by example. That is not just a good principle to follow in battle. It is a good principle to follow in life, which is itself a kind of battlefield. It is those who go through life and approach their work without any examples and models to anchor, challenge, and ground them that often flounder, while those who have such anchors tend to flourish,” said the president.

“I know that this philosophy is counter-cultural and counterintuitive, for we live in a time where everyone is made to believe that it is no use having heroes that inspire us because the only hero worth having is yourself. But this is naïve at best and the world is littered with fallen soldiers who have suffered needless defeat in the pursuit of heroics that were divorced from the wisdom, example and instruction of seasoned generals. So, I implore you to escape this fate. You have a rich heritage of noble and formidable examples and you must not allow anyone to exploit you to the point of making you despise that heritage for to do so is to do harm to yourself by removing the nourishing roots from the tree of your life.”

Pioneer of Mindset Change Project Bantu Saunders Jumah, has expressed his grave concern over the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) silence on reported electoral irregularities calling for the establishment of Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to preside over the 2025 elections.

Jumah observes that there have been reported reports on registration of minors as voters in Mangochi and Dedza where an independent candidate, Jacob Kaumphawi penned the electoral body’s Chairperson Judge Dr. Chifundo Kachale to investigate the electoral irregularities claiming that all these matters were put under the carpet.

Bantu Saunders Jumah

He feels the MEC is closing its ears and eyes on irregularities reported raising fears that the same is body preparing to preside over the tense during the 2025 elections where electoral irregularities will reach the climax.

Speaking through his face book page widely followed by millions of people in Malawi and Africa, Jumah has however, advised Kachale not to side with criminals for him to be trusted by all Malawians that he is more than ready to handle the 2025 elections.

He observes that Kachale’s silence to act on the electoral irregularities by the opposition camps is speaking for itself that he is siding with government and it is not wrong to suspect him of being dictated by government discharging Mec mandate.

Jumah has also advised Malawians not to allow criminals be treated as Very Very Important Persons (VVIP) because they are party loyalists but to let VVIPs remain VVIPs not criminals to remain VVIPs claiming that this is destroying the good reputation of Malawi.

The Mindset Change Pioneer has appealed to all patriotic Malawians who love the country, church organizations, and religious leaders to think of Malawi going back to the 1994 Independent Electoral Commission to run the 2025 elections in the interest of all.

He expresses fears that since Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) was established by an Act of Parliament, there have been no elections which were free, fair, credible and transparent making many to lose their interests in taking part to the future elections.

“There is need to activate the 1994 constitution recalling back Section 64 and 65 for Malawi to be totally free from political hooligans with political patriots to lead the country,” says Jumah.

He has also appealed to all Malawians to patronize rallies and listen to political party programs and objectives for them to make valid and positive decisions on who is a political patriot and political hooligans.

Jumah says he sees no reason many people registering and when it comes on the actual voting day, shunning the process warning Malawians that if they do not go for voting, a wrong person will be elected into office.

The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) says it has been conducting price monitoring exercises on goods and services in the major cities and towns of the country to gather evidence of the violation of the Competition and Fair Trading Act through excessive price increases following the devaluation of the local currency by 44 percent on November 7, 2023.

CFTC says while it is obvious that any devaluation of the currency may trigger an upward adjustment goods or services prices, the organization has noted that some of the price increments are aimed at using the devaluation as a scapegoat to exploit consumers.

Lloyd Vincent Nkhoma

In a statement dated November 22, 2023 signed by its Executive Director (ED)Lloyd Vincent Nkhoma, the CFTC has warned suppliers that any supplier of goods and services found to be engaging in excessive pricing contrary to the CFTC Act, it will not hesitate to issue relevant penalties and sanctions for such conduct.

The commission Says it approached 19 manufacturers and suppliers of products and services to explain the rationale behind such high price adjustments and also engaged the relevant regulators on the same saying it is now expanding the price monitoring exercise to the districts and rural trading centres of the country to establish and gather evidence of possible violations of the CFTC Act.

“The CFTC is encouraging consumers and the general public to report any suspected violation of the CFTA through toll free line 2489 or send a WhatsApp message to 0987738749,” reads the statement in part.

Giving his reaction, a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard for Mvera area in Dowa Rodgers Kamphangala, has accused government of not consulting the citizens to be alert on the devaluation of the Malawi Kwacha by 44 percent describing this as a big margin which has never happened in the country’s history.

Kamphangala said it is sad that President Chakwera and his Vice Saulos Chilima promised Malawians of servant leadership, and that he was expecting that the two leaders would be coming to the citizens to seek their views on matters of national importance but the opposite is happening.

He said even though the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) is monitoring prices in cities, towns, districts and rural trading centres, this will not stop price adjustments to goods and services.

The MCP diehard has however, advised government to reduce levies on fuel observing that this is the only way for prices of commodities to be reduced but if this is left as it is, Malawians should bless for tougher times, Government do run stores, prices will go up beyond the reach of everyone in Malawi.

“Reduce fuel levies, all adjustments in price are basing on fuel increase, once the levies are reduced, prices of goods and services will be at least reasonable,”said Kamphangala

The Malawi National Football Team, the Flames Head Coach, Patrick Mabedi has turned down allegations that the team is struggling to score upfront due to the absence of Moroka Swallows forward Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango.

Mabedi was speaking this after Malawi went down 1-0 to Tunisia in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers at the Bingu National Stadium(BNS) in Lilongwe on Tuesday.

Patrick Mabedi

Said the Flames coach:”Football is a game of 11 players. The absence of one player is not an excuse. We have played eight games without the mentioned player, performing well. It is essential to groom replacements for the future.”

He expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, emphasizing the valuable experience gained for future endeavors.

Mabedi refused to accommodate Mhango after he reportedly missed his flight to Liberia, describing the incident as a sign of indiscipline.

Tunisia’s coach, Jalal Qaderi, commended the resilience of the Malawi Team, acknowledging their offensive prowess while attributing their victory to tactical superiority and experience.

“We knew it was a challenging match, respecting the offensive Malawi Team.

“However, our tactical prowess and concentration prevailed. Experience played a crucial role in securing the win,” stated Qaderi.

It was a match that the visitors enjoyed much ball possession in the entire regulation time, but the resilient youthful Flames gave them a tough ride only to concede a goal in the 87th minute.

Their goal came from a penalty after Flames defender, Lawrence Chaziya unleashed a dangerous and careless tackle on the advancing Tunisia’s striker, Sayfallah Ltaief.

Youssef Msakni sent Malawi’s goalkeeper, Brighton Munthali in the wrong direction.

It was too late for the hosts to equalize.

In his comment, Sports Journalist Edwin Mbewe stressed on the need for Mabedi to reconsider team selection, especially in the attacking department.

“The way we played today indicated the lack of a killer punch upfront.

“The current attackers have much to learn,” observed Mbewe.

The Flames are still in position 3 with 3 points in Group H while Tunisia leads with 6 points and are being followed closely by Equatorial Guinea.

They have the same points but with goal difference.

On June 3 2024, Malawi shall take on Sao Tome and Principe in the ongoing qualifiers.
